Tito Ortiz vs. Mark Coleman “Confirmed” For UFC 106 on November 21

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Aug 18, 2009 at 7:01 pm ET33 Comments

Tito OrtizTito Ortiz’s return to the Octagon against Mark Coleman will co-headline UFC 106 on November 21 in Las Vegas, according to Mike DiSabato of MMA Authentics, a sponsor of Coleman’s, who tweeted confirmation of the light heavyweight bout on Tuesday.

After completing his UFC contract last July in a loss to Lyoto Machida, Ortiz (15-6-1) considered offers with EliteXC, Strikeforce, and Affliction but ultimately mended his relationship with UFC President Dana White and re-signed with the promotion. “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” has not won since an October 2006 victory over Ken Shamrock, suffering losses to Chuck Liddell and Machida as well as a draw to Rashad Evans following the win.

Coleman (16-9), a former heavyweight who was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame last year, suffered a third-round TKO to Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in his return to the UFC earlier this year, but bounced back with a unanimous decision over Stephan Bonnar at UFC 100 last month.

This is a great match up of two veterans of the sport. I suspect the younger stronger tito will control the grappling and muscle a trademark GnP victory over the old man coleman.

But who knows, tito’s been away for a long time and could very well come into this fight rusty as hell. COleman on the other hand just beat a very game bonnar and has got to be feeling great after that upset. I’d like to see tito come back with an improved game and healthy. He’s still young enough to be a solid 205 contender imo.

  • This is almost a gimme fight for Ortiz, he should beat Coleman, whether it’s standing or on the ground. Even if Coleman gets a takedown i’m sure Tito will be able to get back up, but if Tito gets the takedown first then it’s punishment time for Coleman.

    • surfingk5 says:

Hardly a gimme. Coleman is a threat to anyone. Unpredictable and inconsistent maybe. No way is this a gimme.

It’s a great match up and Tito has his work cut out for him. Especially considering it is his first fight after back surgery and a lay off. I have high expectations for Tito and expect him to win and move on back to contender position.

But, I say again this is in no way a gimme. I don’t think he would have taken a gimme. I think the old Tito will be back in original form and should be a great fight.

Can’t wait to see Tito back in the octagon!

  • Will says:

They fight out of the same camp, Team Punishment, so that fight won’t happen.

  • Sega11 says:

Mark Coleman is going to be killed i see this going to tito by tko frist round no problem

  • figs says:

This match-up is not the least bit interesting to me. I’ve never been a fan of either guy, but I am routing for Coleman. Tito hasn’t looked the same in years, so lets see what he can pull-off.

  • naturaldizaster says:

Hope I’m not taking anything away from Tito by saying this but I have a strong suspicion that the fight game that Tito is capable of bringing into the cage has been out-evolved by newer and more talented competition. Maybe the same with Coleman but I attribute more of his recent losses to wear and tear/age.

That said, still expecting a good fight,I like the idea of two strong GnP masters rumbling it out.

  • southcakalak says:

Tito will never fight on an undercard…the end

  • Jenkinsss says:

Im so psyched for this fight. I am a HUGE Tito fan. And even though i think he will get the win, I am in no way at all counting Coleman out of this fight. He showed alot of heart in his win over Bonnar, and Bonnar is a pretty well rounded fighter. I think Coleman is also going to come into this fight with lots of confidence and motivation.

As for all the people saying that Tito didnt look the same in his last few fights. First think about who he was fighting…..

Lyoto Machida, the ufc lhw champ, hasnt lost a single round in the UFC, and one of the best p4p fighters in the world.
Chuck Liddell, I know he hasnt looked great in his last few fights but if there is one person Chuck knows how to beat, its Tito.
Rashad Evans, former lhw champ, AND Tito won that fight IMO. Rashad got a very lucky draw because of Tito getting the point deduction.

Plus…Tito has said repeatedly that he needed back surgery and after he left the UFC he had that done…so I dont think anyone can really predict how well he will perform, but I think he will fight pretty impressively.

  • goblue says:

i think tito is too big of a name to go to the undercard if he loses

  • dbiz says:

Oh yay, an easy fight for the Huntington Beach Ba-Zzzzzzz

  • carls says:

I think this has a lot to do with why they aired the Bonnar Coleman fight on spike. They are trying to hype up coleman a bit so that a co-main event fight between him and Tito will have some solid drawing power and people wont just think that the UFC is feeding him to Tito.

  • jcohl says:

Assuming Tito makes it all the way back from his surgery and subsequent layoff, Coleman should present no great challange to his comeback efforts.
Also, this fight is a great indication of how much of an advantage it is when a fighter has a personal relationship with the promoter. IMO Stephan Bonnar got Coleman because on paper it seemed like an easy “W” for Bonnar, a fighter who certainly needed a win. Bonnar to one extent or another is always going to be looked favorable upon by Dana White because of the TUF finale with Forrest Griffin, which explains why he probably still has a job.
Tito is certainly getting an easy lay-up for his first fight back…

  • windmiller says:

After Tito beats Coleman, the UFC should try to re-sign Dan “The Beast” Severn

  • ct says:

Not a gimme for tito imo…. i would probably say they are even on the strength and wrestling…. but tito has been out for a long time… a lil ring rust will prolly show here… coleman could catch him here… but i think the out ground and pounding tito is back and will win this fight by 2nd round tko… you might get to see some of tito’s underrated bjj… never know

  • windmiller says:

THIS GUY’S “NAME” IS A LINK TO ANOTHER SITE AND WHEN I CLICKED IT… MY COMPUTER LOST THIS SITE AND KINDA FROZE UP

  • Gunslinger says:

this could end up being a really good wrestling war….but i think itll most likely be tito teeing off on colemann to a tko victory..wait if tito finishes colemann before the third round will he get a title shot like shogun :)

  • Josh V says:

With Tito’s cardio, Coleman is done in the first round. I am not a Tito fan by any means, but Coleman’s dead. First round TKO by Tito via ground’n'pound.

  • jpdakilla says:

Titos gonna punish him into retirement …….lol..then maybe even have a shirt that says that ha

  • CC says:

Is this the first UFC Masters Division fight

  • Eye-Rhyme says:

Tito is going to punish coleman…
I see this fight ending the way the
last Tito and Ken fight ended….
Tito in a dominant position unleashing
    his wrath…

  • BOBBY says:

ortiz is a joke,he will never get the title back.Hell he dont even want to fight anymore

  • The Zan Man says:

I cant wait to see Tito fight

    Tito all the way

  • JAI says:

Hopefully Tito will win this one and look good doing it. After that, i’d like to see him in against Franklin and maybe rematch Evans and Griffin.

  • Vinz_Clortho says:

Try a new weight class Tito will never come close to Machida.. or the now LHW silva. Good as a date keeper.. MAYBE.. we will see if he can grab himself an MMA win over Coleman, then see him get his *** handed to him on a regular basis which, for me, is just fine.

  • midgetman says:

coleman is gonna work him and suprise us hes not gonna use wrestling i have a feeling coleman will standup with him
