Justin Jones stepped up on short-notice against TUF 19 light-heavyweight Corey Anderson, but ultimately succumbed to Anderson’s superior wrestling skills in the clinch and ground en route to a decision victory for the TUF winner. Jones had his moments though, especially in the first round, where he showed off his powerful hands as he landed several lead left hooks that seemed to rattle Anderson, as well as a close guillotine attempt off Anderson takedown.
Ultimately, Anderson’s clinch game was what really drove him to receive the dominant decision victory (with scores of 30-27, 30-27, and 30-26). Several takedowns and devastating knee strikes in the clinch, including a spinning back elbow in the third round, compiled to batter Jones. This was a big win for Anderson because we got to see how far his wrestling has come; he didn’t just control position, he looked to create space and land strikes, and also threatened with a few half-heart submission attempts. Anderson couldn’t get the finish, but he definitely wasn’t looking to just ride his way to an easy decision.
Jones’s hands proved to be a troublesome for Anderson early on, but the TUF 19 winner found his way around them through his suffocating clinch game. Good win for Anderson, but also an admirable attempt by Jones who stepped in on short-notice, and in a weight class above.
