UFC Releases Leites and McCrory After All

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Aug 14, 2009 at 6:35 pm ET23 Comments

Tamdan McCroryDespite a report earlier Friday that UFC President Dana White would reverse the releases of middleweight Thales Leites and welterweight Tamdan McCrory, the UFC has officially cut both fighters.

MixedMartialArts.com and MMAjunkie.com confirmed the releases on Friday afternoon:

…according to mixedmartialarts.com, which is co-owned by McCrory’s manager, comments were misinterpreted and McCrory has, in fact, been released from the UFC’s roster. MMAjunkie.com has since confirmed Leites, too, remains released from the organization.

“It seems that the story was not an exact representation of the conversation between White and Iole, but seemingly an honest misinterpretation,” the mixedmartialarts.com report read. “As it stands, McCrory will not have his next fight inside the UFC octagon but has been fielding offers from other organizations and may start to work his way up to the middleweight division.”

  • The UFC has let go of some decent fighters, some who didn’t deserve to get cut, and yet they keep the Keith “The Dean of getting ko’d” Jardine…………………………………………………..

    • Jazzkok says:

dude this back and forth is ridiculous. this sucks but it isn’t the first time they’ve let good fighters go. Look at rich clementi and jason mcdonald. I think they should have stayed. Guess we’ll be seeing leites and mccrory in strikeforce soon.

      • Dean says:

I agree. Do they actually take into account who these fighters have lost to. Mcdonald lost to decent fighters like Demian Maia and Nate Quarry, yet he has beaten guys like Chris Leben and Ed Herman and yet they stay in the UFC. Am not knocking Herman or Leben I just feel this whole lose 2 or 3 fights stuff and you are gone is not consistent.

Look at a talented fighter like Nate Diaz. Lost fights to good guys like Clay Guida and Joe Stevenson, they are not chumps. WOuld he have been fired if Melvin Guillard had beaten him? Rich Clementi is a case in point here also.

    • carls says:

Keep it up Marvel cause you will have a jardine avatar in about 2 weeks.
what was mine gonna be again “if” thiago wins?

  • Nightmare says:

wow this keeps going i’m laughing that thales got cut and he got the last title shot at anderson. i wonder if tomorrow that they’ll decide to keep them.

  • bfree says:

This has too be extremely frustrating; you’re cut, wait a minute i kinda like you you’re back on, no never mind you suck better luck next time. The UFC should have their own developmental minor league so they can keep younger prospects and older veterans that aren’t really performing up to their ability because it sounds like both guys are going to get signed back with UFC anyway.

  • Jenkinsss says:

Thats whack. Leites goes 5-3 in the UFC and gets cut? I know the guy had bad performances in his last two fights…but still..I think he should have got one more fight in the UFC to try and get another W. Then if he lost, cut him. That sucks. McCrory is usually a really exciting fighter, but I know he will be back in the UFC after a few fights.

  • Nightmare says:

CRAP! i wrote that same message twice!

  • Bobby says:

leites should go. i dont pay $45+ to see some loser lay on hit back while the other guys lust standing looking at him…. do you guys see my point of view view??

    • dbiz says:

At the same time, no one pays $45+ to see a guy back off of mount and look down at him, either. There was blame in that fight on both sides.

      • Dean says:

Ultimately people want to see exciting fights. Winning or losing is only part of the whole equation. Sakara is usually an exciting fighter when he finds a stand up fighter. I think the Leites vs Sakara match was a bad clash of styles.

  • Bobby says:

well maybe if he payes me some of my money i lost watching those “sh!!!!ty” ppvs,,,,, i might think differently about him.

  • Mr1000lbs says:

    stop playin with my emotions!

  • jcohl says:

Why is it suddenly so hard to get a straight answer out of an MMA promotion these days? I know the sport is growing, and there are a lot more hands on deck than there used to be, but honestly, whats the deal with not knowing whether or not you’ve cut two guys?

Also, I’m fine with Thales Leites getting punted. The guy did the sport, the UFC, his opponent, his fellow 185 contenders, and all of the fans a tremendous disservice in his fight with Anderson Silva, and set grapplers back in terms of getting title shots.
    Just ask Demian Maia.
As for Tamdan McCrory, I think the UFC is making a mistake. The guy has a lot of skill and potential, and I don’t see the wisdom of allowing him to develop and fight for some other promotion.

So now I wonder how long it will take for Strikeforce to sign the Barn Cat, and whether or not he’ll make White regret cutting him…

  • David says:

Man, why the hell they cut Mcrory for? I like him. In a few years that dude will be tearin some **** up. So what if they lose two in a row!
