Thanks to Luke Rockhold’s impressive run as of late, which includes finishes of Costa Philippou, Tim Boetsch, and Michael Bisping, everyone understands that the middleweight is set for a big fight next time out.
Of course, the fact he’s also the former Strikeforce champ and is currently ranked #5 in the UFC’s 185 division points that way as well.
While the UFC hasn’t announced who’s next for Rockhold, the AKA fighter recently had this to say about UFC 184, while appearing on MMA Junkie.com Radio. As you’ll likely recall, that event will take place on February 28th, and will feature middleweight champ Chris Weidman taking on Vitor Belfort. It will also include a pivotal middleweight fight between contenders “Jacare” Souza and Yoel Romero.
“There are four middleweights fighting coming up in February, and potentially someone might fall out,” Rockhold said. “If one of those guys falls out, I’ll be ready to go.”
And there’s no doubt if one does, the UFC will likely give Mr. Rockhold a call. But what is the well rounded fighter thinking in terms of an opponent, if all of the aforementioned fights go down as scheduled? While talking about his short term future, Rockhold said:
“My next fight’s going to be big,” Rockhold said. “I’ll be ready to take on whoever’s next. Potentially the Machida-Dollaway winner, or one of those guys (at UFC 184). I don’t really see anything else in my future right now.”
Machida-Dollaway will take place on December 20th, and since the UFC has expressed an interest in Machida-Rockhold before, that’s definitely a fight that could materialize. So could Rockhold-Dollaway, if the latter scores another big win and moves up the ranks.
Machida is currently sitting at #4 and Dollaway is ranked #10.
The UFC certainly has some compelling fights to make in the coming months at 185.
