Due to previous losses to Jamie Varner and Donald Cerrone, perhaps some folks wrote off Edson Barbonza as a contender at 155, but the feared striker is likely changing a lot of people’s minds in that respect.
Last night at UFC Fight Night 57, Barboza oustruck top ten ranked, lightweight Bobby Green for the unanimous decision, and in doing so, ended the latter’s eight fight win streak. Barboza is currently ranked #11 in the division, and after the victory, he relayed the following at the post-fight presser (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“I’m feeling really good, but believe me, you guys haven’t seen the best Edson Barboza yet,” Barboza said. “I work hard, and I think the new Edson Barboza is born right now. I feel very comfortable on the ground, in wrestling, and I think my striking is going to be looking better in every fight.
“I’m feeling confident in all areas of the fight. I’m ready for all the guys in this division. It doesn’t matter if the UFC gives me top 5, top 3. I’m ready for this.”
While Barboza may not land a top five guy next, it will almost certainly be someone who is very close. Now it will be interesting to see when and who it is, and whether Barboza can make a title shot run in 2015.
