Diaz Fails To Show For Drug Test, Taylor Will Fight Hieron at Saturday Strikeforce Event

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Aug 10, 2009 at 6:21 pm ET64 Comments

Jay HieronFor the second time in less than a week, Nick Diaz failed to show for a mandatory pre-fight drug test, with his Monday no-show causing him to be removed from his Saturday Strikeforce middleweight championship matchup against Jay Hieron.

Fanhouse learned of the news on Monday afternoon from Ken Pavia, Hieron’s manager.

As reported earlier Monday, Diaz will be replaced on the August 15 “Carano vs. Cyborg” card in San Jose by one-time UFC fighter Jesse Taylor, who is currently riding a seven-fight winning streak.

Taylor and Hieron will meet in a three-round, non-title fight on the Showtime-televised card.

    Wow, Diaz… What a guy!

  • Figs says:

Sad, just sad. With a title on the line, what the f#ck are you thinking?

    • jcohl says:

He was thinking that he’d rather get stoned then fight for the title, thats what he was thinking…

      • jiujitsuMAN says:

just because the guy got busted for having pot in his system does not automatically make it the reason he missed these testings…

it also does not give any reason to say he is getting stoned… i say proove it…

also isnt that border line fighter bashing?

      • Justin says:

        jiujitsuman,
Diaz told the LA Times, “I’m happy to get loaded, hear some good music . . . I remain consistent. And I have an easy way to deal with [the drug tests]”

Him admitting that he gets loaded pretty much proves he is. I guess he didn’t have enough time to do his “herbal cleansing” for these tests.

  • jcohl says:

More importantly, is Taylor and Heiron for the Strikeforce Interim MW title?

  • marvelknight4 says:

    Jesse Taylor vs Jay Heiron???

Diaz messed it up, and he’s been on a hot streak, what a dork, Thh-tockton,Theprethent :D , oh that’s Nate Diaz

  • dbiz says:

This could be really big for Taylor.

Oh, and typical Diaz. This is twice he’s screwed up when someone was trying to give him a belt.

  • Jeff says:

It’s a slap in the face to Strikeforce. Let him fight the rest of his days in Japan.

  • Dr.doom says:

This whole thing is horse $hit . Every organization that steps up a level is automatically cast into bad luck mode with their fights . I still like the card as it stands but WTF ???? I’m startin to think that there’s some foul play going ………..

Haven’t seen the Silva – Griffin yet but a lot of people are calling it a possible “Dive ” on Forrest’s part . The picture on Yahoo looks suspiciously like the one with Ali standing over Liston in their second fight with the Phantom punch . Will wait to see it before I make my mind up .

why would you smoke dope when you know you will be tested right before a title fight ?? You do if there is a better offer out there …….

Sorry . Just disappointed that fight went south ………Still get to see Sobral /Mousasi which was my top choice .

    • Justin says:

Do you really not know that Diaz has bragged for years about smoking pot, and even bragged last year that he could “pass any test any time.” Do you also seriously think think the UFC would make a deal with someone that walked away from them to purposely not show up for a drug test in order to screw with Strikeforce? And do you really think they would pay their poster boy to take a dive against a guy who has never been a strong PPV draw? You’ve made some questionable comments, but this one is pretty doggone bad.

    • christian says:

I don’t believe griffin took a dive @ all. If u watch behind silva while he’s celebrating griffin was wobeling all over the place on his hands and knees. I think he was just embaressed.

  • jordandown says:

this is not nicks fault, csac is out to get it him

    • Justin says:

Yeah, that’s way they gave him three chances to show up… I really hope you were being sarcastic.

      • jiujitsuMAN says:

3 chances? only two chances from what has been published as today was his second chance to get tested… even the first line of this report says so…

      • jcohl says:

Please, PLEASE tell me that this jordandown is goofing, and not really trying to make a case for Nick Diaz blazing a trail thru MMA…

      • dbiz says:

He missed two flights today, apparently, at least that was reported in an earlier story.

      • Justin says:

Wednesday, Friday, and Two flights today, technically that’s four, but I’m just countin Wednesday, Friday and today as the three.

  • jordandown says:

Gracie said Diaz has a legal medical prescription for marijuana to treat a hyperactivity disorder. Gracie said Garcia’s arrangement with the fighter allowed the state agency to recognize the fighter’s condition and gave Diaz a two-week window to flush the drug out of his system.

“They just changed the policy and gave us two days’ notice,” said Gracie. “We don’t have any options.”

come on justin dont you run this website? you should know better

    • ZP580 says:

Medicinal? I call bull$h*t. If he does have a perscription, then it is from a crooked doctor. Money Talks.

    • dbiz says:

It may be legal under state law, but so are a lot of other powerful narcotics. And you can’t fight with them in your system.

Furthermore, marijuana is not recognized by any major medical groups as a treatment for hyperactivity disorders anywhere. It is also legal with a prescription in California, but owning the prescribed drug is still a violation of federal law.

He is not being punished for smoking, he is being punished for NOT TAKING THE TEST. This isn’t a positive test, this is him not following the guidelines for receiving a license. There is no legal issue, there is only him being too stoned to take the test. He’s f#cked up again and no one around him is willing to let him burn.

      • jiujitsuMAN says:

proove hes too stoned… really… now sure the guy gets high,,, but to say what he is doing based on assumptions is going pretty far…

      • dbiz says:

He was told to make the flight to get his test so he could fight. He chose not to. That isn’t making assumptions, it’s established fact.

He has said repeatedly that he will always smoke weed no matter what. Now it has cost him a title shot. This is fact.

Please, tell me where I made an assumption. He would rather smoke weed than fight. It’s right there in black and white.

      • Jenkinsss says:

“He would rather smoke weed than fight. It’s right there in black and white”

        that rhymed hahahaha

    • Justin says:

He has a prescription for marijuana to treat ADHD, I have never heard of pot being used to treat ADHD except for in the case of Nick Diaz. Most of the time, ADHD sufferers are prescribed stimulants, such as ritalin and aderol (or generics thereof) which balance out the brain chemicals and help them to function normally. A narcotic would not have the same effect. Also, have you never heard of doctor shopping?

The CSAC did recently change their rules and implement an earlier test, but I think that Diaz should have found out about that when Josh Barnett was busted by the same earlier test, three weeks ago, which would have given Diaz his two weeks to get it out of his system.

Bottom line, he should know the rules, that’s his responsibility to know the rules and follow them, not the CSAC out to get him.

Finally, no I don’t run the site, I’m just an author and moderator.

      • jcohl says:

And a sharp dressed man from what all the ladies tell me…
        ;)

      • Justin says:

LOL thanks Jchol, but I’ve already impressed the only lady I’m interested in impressing (my wife). ;)

      • BigWorthy says:

        Yea justin your right!
It is proven fact that Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is hyperstimulated by marijuana & Alcohol, so there is no way it would be prescribed to Diaz.

sounds to me somebody is just spining a line to me!

p.s i have the medical paper that say this.

  • Jenkinsss says:

That sucks, i was really looking forward to seeing him fight. He really failed to show responsibility here, but oh well.
Anyways, Im lookin forward to seeing how Taylor competes on the big stage once again. If he can beat Hieron, that would be a big upset IMO.
Although, I still pick Hieron to come out with the victory.

  • windmiller says:

    Shmoke it up, Shmokey

  • submit24 says:

He obviously didn’t want to fight heron. He wanted the rematch with Riggs, when that went out the window, he figured he would wait till the next card and have diaz vs Riggs then. And anyone who has smoked pot knows it helps with hyper activity, you become comatose. But, I never knew it could let you mask the pain of a broken orbital socket and allow you to pull off sick gogoplatas on gomi!

    • Jenkinsss says:

“He obviously didn’t want to fight heron. He wanted the rematch with Riggs”

I highly doubt thats the case here. Especially because the fight with Hieron was going to be for the Strikeforce WW title…
Diaz could have fought Hieron, possibly beat him, then he could have fought Riggs. Makes alot more sense to me..

    • dbiz says:

I’d be surprised if he gets another shot. He just burned Strikeforce badly, possibly forcing them to scrap a title fight. I hope he never fights for them again.

      Send his ass to Japan.

    • Justin says:

“And anyone who has smoked pot knows it helps with hyper activity”

But typically doctors actually prescribe stimulants for attention deficit disorders, not narcotics.

  • Michael T says:

StrikeFarce it is – Dana wins again.

    • jcohl says:

Funny how Dana keeps piling up “wins”, sometimes without even trying.
Although truth be told the sport is better served with a healthy, preferably M-1 Global-free Strikeforce running quality events, and not having their card gutted by injuries and hemp-tardedness…

  • Amped says:

To all those saying Griffen to a dive and got hit with a jab or phantom punch, I suggest you take another look at the actual punch. Silva strikes more like a boxer than a typical mma striker. I’ve watched the fight 5+ times; Griffin is lunging in, Silva backpeddles and lands a crisp, accurate punch right on the button. To give you an idea of the force involved, take a look at Griffin’s head movement when he gets hit. He really gets rocked big time.

It actually angers me that people would be more willing to say that the “fix” was in or that he took a “dive” or he “overtrained” rather than admit that their boy Forrest got worked and tooled by a far superior Silva. Btw, I called the outcome to this when it was announced.
Give credit where credit is due.

  • Will says:

I’m gonna say Nate “accidentally” triangle choked him into a coma and that’s why he missed the 2 appointments.

  • submit24 says:

I see no one disagreed with the last part of my rant, lol. Maybe its a plot to get back into the ufc? Hey, I’m just throwing it out there. Captain cannibis is still one of the biggest draws for strikeforce, hell get the shot. Bet the farm on it. And for the record, juice or not, Josh Barnett is the #2 hvw in mma, and that’s a fact! Hate the guy or not, he would match up great against Brock. Dana should throw some money his way. Or Vince McMahon. Lol.

    • Justin says:

No on disagreed because it’s been argued a dozen other times on here in the last 6 months. We’re tired of it.

    • jcohl says:

Barnett is the number two-ranked MMA HW?
      According to who, WAMMA?
I’m not the least bit interested in the rankings of websites looking for Fedor and Josh Barnett interviews, or worse, tradin gin follow the leader “journalism”. I’m more impressed by guys that get into the cage and fight for what they want. Barnett had an opportunity to do that, and blew it, as did Nick Diaz.
If Josh Barnett was even the slightest bit committed to this sport, instead of cashing the checks from the New Japan Pro Wrestling sideshow, he would have made sure he was squared away, handed Fedor his a$$, and then hit up the UFC for a fat contract and a title shot with Brock Lesnar.
Instead, he’s sniffing around M-1 Global hoping they book him in a fight somewhere like Alabama, Alaska, or South Dakota, where no state athletic commission exists.
If Nick Diaz cared more about this sport than rolling and burning, he also would have made sure he was squared away, handed Jay Heiron his a$$, and picked up some gold.
Now he can go back to his green.

Dana White is many things, but subtle or smeaky isn’t one of them. Sorry, but I just don’t see him sitting in his darkened office with a white fluffy cat in his lap like a James Bond villain and pulling strings behind the scenes to arrange a PED user like Barnett and a weed-aholic like Diaz shoot themselves in their respective feet.
      Again.
      Case closed.

      • Jenkinsss says:

Well said jcohl. I think that just about sums it up.

      • naturaldizaster says:

Yes it does. Certainly makes more sense than these out in left field conspiracy theories. No one was rooting for Forrest more than me, he got beat up and knocked out. I even liked Nick Diaz alot, starting not to so much now, but he blew it, pun intended. You can take a boatload of half a$$ed circumstantial evidence and twist it any way you want, why not examine the actual known facts foremost?

The facts and the laws of physics tell me Forrest got overwhelmed by skill and I also think he wasn’t expecting Silva to come out the gate that aggressive. Nate’s own words in the past are self explanatory, as should his failing to show up for a mandatory, routine urine test. I’m all ears for some good conspiracy theories, I subscribe to a few myself outside the realm off MMA.

Just plz back them with facts and not circumstantial guess-work.

  • submit24 says:

As for Barnett, I don’t see who would be ranked above him in anyones standings. The man has only lost to 3 people! Definitely not Shane carwin or Cain v. Those guys are untested. Admit it, you all hate Josh because of the roids n all, but anyone who denies his talent is a biased mark, case closed. Ps, I love these discussions what a way to pass the day. Lol.

    • Justin says:

Fedor is ranked above Barnett for a lot of reasons….

He has also been relatively inactive since 2006, and took forever to finish off Yvel. I wouldn’t consider ranking Carwin or Cain over him, but Lesnar and Big Nog I would.

  • Tradition Rules says:

“If Josh Barnett was even the slightest bit committed to this sport, instead of cashing the checks from the New Japan Pro Wrestling sideshow, he would have made sure he was squared away, handed Fedor his a$$, and then hit up the UFC for a fat contract and a title shot with Brock Lesnar.”

This comment is so far off base….

Josh Barnett has not worked for New Japan in, what, three years?

  • submit24 says:

And Josh Barnett fought 9 times in 14 months, I don’t know any other hvw mma fighter that dedicated. So what if he wrestles occasionally for new Japan. That is where this hybrid sport came from, from pro wrestling. Pancrase, uwf, bushido, pride, were all derived from or were “fixed” outcomes. Who cares if he wrestles, he would still whoop any hvw fighter out there (cro cop rematch required lol). The ufc champ is a pro wrestler, what difference does it make.

    • Justin says:

I can’t find any stretch in his career where he ought 9 times in 14 months. The closest he came was 8 times in 15 months from October 2005 through December 2006, and three of those were losses. He then promptly went 15 months without fighting at all.

  • SPUD says:

IT’S THE M-1 CURSE! IT’S ALREADY SCREWING UP STRIKEFORCE! NOOOOOO!!!!!

  • Shaun says:

Ya know it’s kinda funny how Strikeforce is changing injured and non-clean fighters out of this event almost every day, and Affliction loses one popular fighter and they shut down haha. It’s kinda hard to blame Strikeforce for these card changes since it’s the fighter’s responsibility but it really does look bad when when your main competitor is the UFC and their fighters rarely ever fail drug tests.

  • jcohl says:

Tradition Rules, submit24, spare us the Josh Barnett defenses.
I was a longtime supporter of his, until his latest screw-up, and was training catch-wrestling the same year he defeated Randy Couture down at Mike Mack’s in Florida, so I’m pretty familiar with the man.
My comments on Barnett are spot-on, and if you think Barnett hasn’t been “puroresu-ing” his way thru the last several years, you should check again. He was booked for some sort of pro wrestling event last weekend, and he “wrestled” Tank Abbott last year.
And thats just off the top of my head, and I’m not fan or pro wrestling.

As for this “9 times in 14 months” deal, as best as I can tell Barnett has fought MMA 4 times in the last 2 years, twice in 2008 and twice in 2009, and took off all of 2007. As for his Japanese shoot-fighting and Japanese pro wrestling gigs, I’m less interested because the veracity of said events is very much in question, so I consider them more appearances, except for Pancrase.

Barnett’s latest fu<k-up is just another example of how MMA isn't much of a priority for him. Believing otherwise is just deluding yourselves.
If Barnett wants to be a sideshow act, thats his business, but he shouldn't try to sell us the noise that he's still a serious MMA fighter, because informed MMA fans just aren't buying it…
