Cub Swanson has made it pretty clear that if he defeats Frankie Edgar in impressive fashion, he expects to get a call from the UFC, telling him he’s facing featherweight champ Jose Aldo next. If that doesn’t happen? And say Conor McGregor gets tapped for a title shot? Well, it sounds like things could get nasty.
As most fans know, Swanson has been doing his best to lock up a rematch with Aldo, by winning six straight fights and moving into the #2 ranking spot. Swanson relayed a while back that he’s been promised a title shot if he takes out Edgar on November 22nd, and Dana White recently confirmed as much…sort of.
The thing is that White has also said McGregor could be next in line, provided he defeats Dennis Siver on January 18th. So what happens if both Swanson and McGregor score big, highlight reel wins?
Recently Swanson spoke with Sherdog.com, and the 31 year-old provided this rather interesting comment, when asked what he might do if he gets skipped for a title fight:
“Who knows? At this point I don’t know what the possibilities are,” Swanson said. “All I know is that, in my mind, I finish Frankie Edgar, that I’m getting that title shot. That’s all that’s on my mind. If I don’t get that, who knows? Maybe I’ll do something different. Maybe I’ll go start boxing.”
According to the Jackson’s MMA fighter, his interest in boxing professionally isn’t anything new, as Swanson furthered:
“When I’ve had frustrations before with injuries, I’ve asked the UFC a few times if I could do it and they weren’t up for it, which I completely understand. When you’re in the top of the sport you have to have all your attention on one thing,” he said. “There’s plenty of people who have their attention on that one thing. I completely understand. It is something that I’d like to try.
And there in lies the issue, chances are that if the UFC goes with McGregor and they tick off Swanson in the process, the promotion isn’t going to let him transition into pro boxing. That said, once Swanson’s current deal runs out with Zuffa, well….
The story also relayed that Swanson has spent time training with Timothy Bradley for this upcoming fight, who combat sports fans understand, knows a few things about all this boxing stuff.
At any rate, all this talk might be a wee bit premature. Swanson is going to have to be at his very best to finish Edgar, who has never been stopped in 22 bouts to date. It should be an amazing fight.
UFC FN 57 will be hosted by the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas.
