Ricardo Lamas demonstrated at UFC 180 that he remains, very much so, a top featherweight contender, by taking out Dennis Bermudez with a beautifully executed guillotine choke.
While Bermudez may not be a household name just yet, the 145’er had won 7 straight bouts heading into the event, and had worked his way into the #7 ranking as a result. So, in other words, “The Bully’s” victory last night was certainly nothing to gloss over.
Since Lamas was decisioned by Jose Aldo earlier this year, he has to record a few more wins before getting another crack at the champ. As a result, and in the meantime, Lamas clearly wants to end the title shot run of Conor McGregor.
“I want to get back to the title shot,” Lamas said. “The biggest guy everyone is talking about in the featherweight division is Conor McGregor. I’d love to fight with him. I know he’s matched up in January, but if he wins that fight, I think he has to fight a wrestler like me before he gets the title (shot).”
Although many folks agree with Lamas, in terms of the argument that McGregor hasn’t faced a top tier wrestler yet, chances are the latter will fight Aldo next if he gets by Dennis Siver. That fight will take place January 18th in Boston.
UFC 180 went down at the Mexico City Arena in Mexico City.
