UFC 180: Main Card Play-By-Play

UFC

Okay, with the prelims for UFC 180 now complete, we move to the main card.

In the headliner, Mark Hunt will battle Fabricio Werdum for the interim heavyweight title. It could be one crazy, main event, which will go down in the Mexico City Arena.

Edgar Garcia vs. Hector Urbina

Urbina plants a leg kick to get things started. Urbina lands another thumping kick to the leg but not long after Garcia sweeps him to the floor. Garcia works his way to Urbina’s back and is landing some shots to the latter’s head. Garcia loses position and Urbina’s on top. Urbina threatens with an Anaconda Choke but can’t lock it up. Garcia gets back to his feet but gets caught with a nasty guillotine. Garcia taps. That’s some slick work from Mr. Urbina.

The latter shoots in but ends up pulling guard. They scramble and Montano punishes Heatherly with some hammer fists. Heatherly gets back up, but Montano starts bombing away with knees. Heatherly isn’t doing anything. John McCarthy jumps in to stop the fight. Those knees weren’t good for anybody…

Dennis Bermudez vs. Ricardo Lamas

Lamas throws a spinning heel kick early on but Bermudez avoids and clinches up. Lamas does a nice job of breaking away. Bermudez takes a sidekick to the chest and slips to the mat. The latter gets back to his feet and the two start working along the cage. Wow. Lamas floors Bermudez with a ridiculously stiff jab, jumps on a guillotine and forces the latter to tap. Fantastic finish. “The Bully” isn’t exiting the featherweight contender mix anytime soon.

Jake Ellenberger vs. Kelvin Gastelum

Gastelum changes levels early on but Ellenberger moves away. Ellenberger is winging his right hand but Gastelum has landed a few counters. Ellenberger cracks Gastelum with a right hook. Ellenberger lands another right but as he follows up, Gastelum explodes into a takedown. Ellenberger takes a few elbows but gets back up. The latter throws Gastelum down but in the scramble, gives up his back. Gastelum throws on an extremely fast, rear-naked-choke and Ellenberger is forced to tap. What a performance from Gastelum.

Fabricio Werdum vs. Mark Hunt

Werdum starts off the headliner with a kick to the leg. Hunt blocks a head kick and then sends Werdum to the mat with a right hand. Wow. Hunt lets him back up, and not long after, avoids a takedown attempt. Werdum grazes Hunt’s jaw with a spinning kick. Hunt tumbles into Werdum and winds up in his guard. Hunt lands a shot and eventually steps up and out. Hunt lands a couple more shots and Werdum looks pretty worried. Round comes to an end. Now that was a fun and tense five minutes.

Round two: Hunt is taking some deep breaths. The feared slugger chucks two bombs that miss. Werdum eats another shot and briefly falls to the mat. Werdum tries a spinning kick but Hunt blocks it. The latter takes a punch from Werdum. Again, Werdum attempts a shot but Hunt sprawls. Out of nowhere, Werdum floors Hunt with a cracking, flying knee. Hunt tries to cover up but Werdum is tossing down shots from above and the fight is stopped. Referee Herb Dean gave Hunt a long leash in terms of time, but the heavyweight protests the stoppage.

What a win for the new, interim heavyweight champ.
