Cain Velasquez will close out 2014 as the UFC Heavyweight Champion, but if the renowned fighter can’t return to action relatively early into 2015, it looks like he may be stripped of the title (cue comparisons to Dominick Cruz…now).
Velasquez was sidelined earlier this year after undergoing shoulder surgery in late 2013, and then more recently, he injured his right knee and had to pull out of UFC 180. Since a year will go by without Velasquez defending the heavyweight crown, Mark Hunt was booked to fight Fabricio Werdum for an interim title.
The word is that Velasquez is expected to return to action in March, 2015, but what if he can’t? What if the star gets injured again? Well, in Dana White’s weekly interview with UFC.com, the promotion’s president offered this comment, when asked what will happen.
“We’re headed in that direction now,” White said. “This next fight in Mexico is for the interim title. So if Cain couldn’t compete again, the winner of this fight would be seen as the champion.”
Now, clearly this might be news that doesn’t sit well with Velasquez fans, but it will likely depend on the circumstances. By the time March, 2015 rolls around, approximately 17 months will have gone by since Velasquez stopped Junior dos Santos at UFC 166.
