Wilson Gouveia Forced Off UFC 102 With Back Injury

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Aug 7, 2009 at 11:09 pm ET4 Comments

Wilson GouveiaMiddleweight Wilson Gouveia (pictured) has withdrawn from his UFC 102 matchup against Ed Herman after suffering a back injury that will sideline him until at least October.

MMA News first reported the injury on Friday just days after Herman was tapped to replace an injured James Irvin and take on Gouveia at the August 29 event in Portland.

Though the UFC could keep Herman and the card and seek a replacement for the 185-pound fight, the promotion is expected to scratch the bout entirely and instead add Herman to one of its other upcoming cards against an opponent to-be-determined.

Prior to accepting the fight against Gouveia, Herman had been set to fight Aaron Simpson on September 16 at UFC Fight Night 19 in Oklahoma City, but it was reported earlier Friday that Simpson would instead fight Dan Miller at the Spike-televised event. Whether that fight will be altered following Gouviea’s injury is not yet known.

i realize MMA is a contact sport, but am i crazy in thinking that the last 12-18 months has been exceptionally bad for injuries? seems 2 or 3 times a week fighters are dropping out of fights. just bad luck? or a trend in which fighters are less likely to fight when not at 100%?

In all honesty, you are just hearing more about the injuries now. Between media coverage ramping up and more shows by more promotions it just seems that way. Are certain cards being hit harder than others? Oh yeah big time but this isn’t anything I’d worry about too much as far as a growing trend.

Dana’s long range plan? What is it ? Does he have one?
The more the fighters fight the quicker they burn out through repetetive injury. Dana is fighting his own personal battle, with the need for immediate revenue vs. long term viability for each fighter which also “ultimately” effects revenue.

Any great fighter can loose on any given day. When they loose because of nagging injury and to many fights, the asset (fighter value) depreciates. On the flip side if the fighter is bringing in less $ per year, due to fewer fights, the UFC cant pay the fighter as much.

They need to arrange more personal appearances with media, such as tonight show, Letterman,etc.. Not Dana XXX The fighters need to promote ! Interest goes up. gates go up. Dana Makes more. Fighters are paid more but fight less. Fewer injuries.

What is your long range plan, Dana ?
