M-1 Global Searching For New Location For “Breakthrough” Event
M-1 Global’s recently-announced “Breakthrough” event, which was to take place on August 28 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, will apparently take place at another location to-be-determined after the promotion declined to approach the California State Athletic Commission about the card.
SI.com’s Josh Gross first-reported the news on his podcast on Wednesday.
Nevada was reportedly under consideration as the event’s new location, but MMAjunkie reports that M-1 had not applied for a promoters license in the state and was unlikely to be approved in time to hold the event in the state.
According to Gross, the event is now likely to take place at a venue to-be-announced in Oklahoma.
Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal (pictured) vs. Don Frye and Nick Thompson vs. Karl Amoussou are among the fights slated for the HDNet-televised card.

every time i see this pic, i think 50 cent is in MMA now!!!
So…M-1 wants to put on shows without a promoter’s license. No wonder the UFC wants nothing to do with them.
hence why they want to co-promote…using other people’s licenses to make money… lovely…
What Joke!
Is M-1 clueless the UFC is going to counter any MMA event M-1 puts on.
Whenever M-1 decides to put Don Frye onto the altar where King Mo rips out his heart, the UFC will just show UFC 100 and 101 for free on Spike!
I’m surprised that M-1 Global isn’t loading up their lame-a$$ dog and pony show and heading out to either Alabama, Alaska, or South Dakota, which if memory serves are states without athletic commissions…
well they havent found a location yet so it could end up in one of those states
This definitely clearly demonstrates why the UFC does not want to do business with them. I wonder if they are trying to find somewhere that will let Barnett fight… I hope not.
God I hope not either. Could a whole promotion get suspended from licensing if they knowingly put a suspended fighter on a show?
He’s not suspended, just unlicensed (and unlicensable in CA for at least a year).
Epic fail by M-1.
I think they are avoiding those states b/c of the natural lower attendance they’ll be getting. It was likely a hope of their that they could use the Expo attendee numbers to boost their numbers so they look more respectable.
good riddance get lost M-1.
total joke.
they just get worse and worse with each passing day. please relegate them to the margins of reporting as well – they clearly are simply one-step up from backyard wrestling.
If anyone is interested, here is the statement from the CSAC. While I would imagine dbiz is right, at this point, it is only speculation. Educated speculation, but still speculation. Nowhere that I’ve been able to find on their site does it say anything about Barnett having to wait a specified period of time before he can apply for another one.
If someone has information to the contrary, please post a link. This is not an opinion area. Any claims really should be validated or you will not be taken seriously.
