Jim Miller vs. Thiago Tavares Announced for UFC 103 on September 19
A lightweight matchup between Jim Miller and Thiago Tavares has been added to the preliminary card for UFC 103, which takes place on September 19 in Dallas, Texas, the UFC recently announced.
Miller (14-2) is 3-1 in the UFC since making his Octagon debut in 2008, opening with back-to-back wins over David Baron and Matt Wiman before dropping a decision to Gray Maynard in March. The one-time IFL fighter bounced back last month with a unanimous decision win over Mac Danzig at UFC 100.
Tavares (14-3), who was forced to withdraw from a June bout against Melvin Guillard due to an elbow injury, most-recently fought in January, defeating Manny Gamburyan via unanimous decision. He had previously lost 3 of his last 4 fights, defeating Michihiro Omigawa while suffering defeats to Tyson Griffin, Matt Wiman, and Kurt Pellegrino.
UFC 103 is headlined by Rich Franklin vs. Vitor Belfort and also includes Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic vs. Junior dos Santos.

GREAT ADDITION…Miller always puts up a good fight.
This should be a scrap, but im going with miller.
i agree with ye man
this fight finalizes the card(unoficially)
I still can’t believe that Miller lost to Maynard, so I look for him to make amends against Tavares in a solid outing…
You were surprised when Maynard beat Miller! Marvel are you using Jcohl’s account???
nice, carls.
No, it is in fact me, and not my 616 counterpart MK4.
I just think that Miller is a real ground wizard. The guy wrestled at Virgina Tech, and trains out of the AMA Fight Club, which has a great New Jersey rep. A guy I work with when I’m doing events in and around Atlantic City, NJ trains up there, and says the Miller brothers are incredible fighters, and train like they’re possessed.
I guess I should mention I was shocked when Dan Miller lost to Chael Sonnen, as well.
Maynard out boxed Miller, and refused to go to the ground with him. Maynard used his strong wrestling to keep the fight standing, where he showed he was a good bit more capable than Miller.
ya though lets be honest it was a really bad matchup for miller, stylisticly
This is alot coming from a Gray supporter like me, but when it did hit the mat Miller was deep into a knee bar. Although Gray pulled out it was close. Maybe Gray did have the perfect gameplan for that fight. Thats another facet of Gray’s game I didnt even point out in the Forums. Gray’s ability to gameplan, for he has the Godfather of it in his corner every fight.
@petterson to be completely honest I see Gray being a bad match-up for 75% if not more of the LW in the UFC. The guys that can give him problems on the ground cant “get” him there, and guys that would win a boxing match with him cant “keep” it there.
This will be a telling factor that will lead Gray to his title shot. It is when he fight guys like BJ and Kenny that he will face problems, because no matter how much I like the guy I know for a fact he will be in a whole lot of trouble no matter where the fight goes.
@jcohl I thought miller was gonna take that fight to. Sonnen’s weakness has allways been subs. And Miller is no slouch in that department. Plus I thought with how sloppy Chael looked on his feet in that fight that he was gonna get KO. But he was relentless and grinded and pounded on miller to the final bell.
you know what carls you’ve got a good point about alot of people being a bad matchup for gray, you’d have to have better standup than he has and really good bjj or be a better wrestler than he is, but kenny and bj are both good mathups to take him out
