Conor McGregor will have not one, but two of his Irish teammates fighting alongside him at UFC Fight Night 59. So, yeah, there’s going to be just a few Irish flags getting waved around that night…especially since the card’s in Boston….
Yes, recently the UFC announced that McGregor’s SBG teammate, Patrick Holohan, will fight flyweight Shane Howell at the event. Now the promotion has confirmed that the gym’s Cathal Pendred will battle welterweight Sean Spencer. TV ratings likely aren’t going to be an issue for the UFC in Ireland that night.
Pendred (15-2-1) has gone 2-0 since he competed on TUF 19, as “The Punisher” choked out Mike King in July, before earning a split decision over Gasan Umalatovn in October. Pendred has gone undefeated now in 10 straight, official bouts (Eddie Gordon eliminated him from TUF 19 via split decision in the semifinals).
Spencer (12-3) worked his way to a unanimous decision win over Paulo Thiago in September, after he was decisioned by Alex Garcia at UFC 171 in March. The Virginia fighter has gone 3-2 in the UFC to date, as Spencer has also scored wins over Yuri Villefort and Drew Dober, but was tapped out by Rafael Natal.
So, that’s an interesting addition to the January 18th card, whihc will be hosted by Boston’s TD Garden Arena.
Some of the other bouts that have been booked for UFC FN 59 include Benson Henderson vs. Eddie Alvarez, Jorge Masvidal vs. Norman Parke, Uriah Hall vs. Costas Philippou, Zhang Lipeng vs. Chris Wade and Lorenz Larkin vs. John Howard.
The main card will be broadcast on FOX Sports 1, and the prelims will likely air on FOX Sports 2.
So, when you consider January is also set to feature UFC 182 (Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier) and UFC 183 (Anderson Silva vs. Nick Diaz), 2015 is kicking off in pretty fine form no?
