Sengoku 9 Results: Hirota Upsets Lightweight Champ Kitaoka, Kanehara Edges Omigawa To Win Featherweight GP
Mizuto Hirota upset Sengoku lightweight champ Satoru Kitaoka in the main event of Sengoku 9 on Sunday in Saitama, Japan, using a barrage of knees on the ground to force the referee to intervene in the fourth round to become the promotion’s new lightweight title-holder.
Hatsu Hioki defeated Masanori Kanehara by unanimous decision in the first featherweight grand prix semifinal, but Hioki was unable to continue in the tournament due to a concussion suffered in the opening bout and was replaced by Kanehara. In the second semifinal contest, Michihiro Omigawa defeated Marlon Sandro by questionable “must decide” decision after the judge’s initially scored the fight a majority draw (30-30, 30-30, 30-29 Sandro).
Kanehara was crowned Sengoku’s first-ever featherweight champion by edging Omigawa by split decision in the grand prix final.
In other notable action, Kazuo Misaki scored a first-round submission of Kazuhiro Nakamura, Blagoi Ivanov, who defeated Fedor Emelianenko at the 2008 World Combat Sambo Championships, won his MMA debut by split decision, and fan-favorite Akihiro Gono suffered a third-round head kick knockout.

Ivanov looked terrible against Fujita.
That was a crazy head kick that Gono took, he was out for awhile!
So wait a minute.
The guy who beat Fedor last year in SAMBO, Ivanov, the sport that Fedor is the Wayne Gretzky of, looked terrible against a pro wrestler [Fujita] pushing 40?!?!
I can’t wait to hear how the Fedorians explain this one, and still arrive at the conclusion that their boy is still the baddest man on the planet…
That was quite possibly one of the worst fights I’ve seen in quite awhile…
The fights last night (early this morn) were pretty good and it was fun watching the entire card..
Sandro v Omigawa was a flat as robbery imo, but a good fight none the less, I thought Sandro would go on to the finals but alas that did not happen..
i really wanted to see Hioki fight and win the GP but he couldn’t continue and that sucked, sooo the event planners decided instead of having a Korean fight in the finals, lets bring back a guy that had already lost in the tourney to win the GP… definately a Korean japanese race realations imo, so therefore the Sung Jung v Jaggers fight was pointless
Misaki looked pretty damn good
Hornbukle looked better than the last time I had seen him fight, yet slower and Gono seemd to be just toying with Hornbuckle, until he got his face kicked off and seriously it was a concerning moment for all fans of MMA, think Keith Jardine (UFC 84) yet with no movement, no eye movement muscle twitch nothing it was concerning….
Darth Yoda did not seem to be the same this fight, it is clear he isn’t right in the head, but hey got brutalized pretty simple.. Darth Yoda will return and try to snap another leg another day…
good night of fights man it was fun
Fedor just signed a three fight deal with strikeforce
