Fan favorite UFC heavyweight Andrei Arlovski has not yet been booked for his next fight which should take place in October or November according to Brawl Sports. The report comes amid discussion over when Arlovski would fight next after being stripped of a shot at the heavyweight title earlier this year. As of now it appears the UFC has not yet decided just what they will be doing with Arlovski in the suddenly deep talent pool of the heavyweight division.
Arlovski is one of the UFC’s most talked about fighters for his technical ability, experience, and personality but after fighting just twice in the past year his stock has taken a hit. Arlovski lost his heavyweight title in April of last year to Tim Sylvia by TKO in the very first round. He was then granted an immediate rematch which he lost by unanimous decision. After dropping two consecutive fights Arlovski needed several wins before he would be considered for a title shot again. After defeated Marcio Cruz at UFC 66 Arlovski met Fabricio Wedum at UFC 70 and, despite winning the fight by unanimous decision, the fight was highly criticized due to the lack of action. The fight hurt his chances at a title shot and have delayed the UFC in booking him for another event.
Here’s a quote from Dana White about the situation:
“His last showing wasn’t very great. That hurts a guy. It sets you back when you have a real bad showing like that, especially when you’re in a division that’s stacked.”
The UFC now has more talent deserving of big fights such as Gabriel Gonzaga, Randy Couture, Mirko “Cro Cop”, and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Even though Arlovski is highly marketable and can draw a crowd the UFC now seems to be stressing the quality of fights over simply stringing wins together.
Although nothing has even been publicly discussed at this point it is highly likely that the UFC will book him onto either the UFC 77 or UFC 78 fight cards, both of which could use the addition of a quality fighter like Arlovski. UFC 77’s card is nearly complete if current rumors pan out but UFC 78 remains a wide open card. Late last month there were even rumors of Arlovski facing Brandon Vera but the rumors have not come true, yet. The fight, which was widely praised for matching up some of the UFC’s top talent, could ultimately happen at UFC 78 after all.
