Here is what’s going down in the main card for UFC 179, which is taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Beneil Dariush vs. Diego Ferreira
Round 1: Dariush comes out the aggressor and Ferreira looks to counter punch. After a brief exchange Ferreira begins to come forward. Dariush lands a hard kick to the body. Both men attempt high kicks. Dariush blasts Ferreira’s leg with a kick. Ferreira rushes in and attempts to take Darius down. The two clinch up along the fence. Not long after they break, Ferreira rushes in, but is swept to the mat. Ferreira is looking for a leg lock as the round ends.
Round 2: Dariush lands another leg kick to begin round. Explodes in for a takedown and briefly gets Ferreira down. Ferreira fires back with a few punches before absorbing another leg kick. Dariush shoots in on a single leg, and after a brief scramble, takes top position. Dariush is working from within Ferreira’s guard but having difficulties landing any hard shots.
Round 3: Ferreira flurries not long into the round. Dariush is attempting to clinch but Ferreira continues to fire away punches. Dariush attempts to sweep Ferreiara to the mat, and eventually gets him to the ground. Dariush is throwing punches while working from within Ferreira’s guard. The latter works his way out from the bottom but Dariush circles to his back. Dariush is throwing knees to Ferreira’s legs as fight comes to an end.

Darren Elkins vs. Lucas Martins
Round 1: Elkins comes out, throws a right hand, and shoots in on Martins’ leg. Elkins trips Martins to the mat, but the Brazilian works his way back up. Elkins throws a front kick and attempts to shoot in again. Martins defends and Elkins backs off. The American continues to throw more strikes and pushes Martins up against the fence. Elkins has a cut on his right cheek. Elkins is pushing forward, changing levels, and throwing shots. Martins lands a counter knee.
Round 2: Martins lands a left hook to begin the round. Elkins attempts a single leg takedown but Martins defends. Elkins has Martins up against the fence and is keeping busy with punches. Martins lands a jab and a right hand before Elkins charges in. Martins partially lands a head kick and follows up with a right. Elkins ties Martins up and then shoots in on a single leg. Elkins continues to throw more shots as the two are clinched up against the fence.
Round 3: Elkins dives in for a takedown but is met by a Martins’ knee. Elkins dives in for a single leg once again. Featherweight has Martins up against the fence. The latter breaks away but Elkins charges in again. The referee breaks them up, but Elkins clinches up with Martins once more. Ref intervenes. Martins throws a couple of strikes but Elkins pushes him up against the cage. Martins lands an elbow to the head of Elkins as he looks for a takedown. Final bell sounds.

Fabio Maldonado vs. Hans Stringer
Round 1: Maldonado lands a left hook and Stringer bulldozes in with a takedown. Stringer is throwing elbows and knees to the body while trying to pass Maldonado’s half guard. Stringer lands a hard elbow to the top of Maldonado’s forehead that leaves a mark. Maldonado attempts to sweep out but Stringer counters. Eventually Maldonado gets to his feet but is taken back down. The Brazilian is bleeding from the top of his head.
Round 2: Stringer throws a right hook and pushes Maldonado to the fence. Maldonado breaks free and throws a jab to the body. Stringer attempts a single leg takedown but Maldonado shrugs it off. Stringer lands a leg kick and takes Maldonado down with a double leg. Maldonado takes top position after a scramble and starts working from the top. The light-heavyweight is landing shot after shot. Maldonado continues to bomb away with punches and Stringer is doing nothing. The fight is stopped and Anderson Silva jumps up on the cage to congratulate Maldonado.

Glover Teixeira vs. Phil Davis
Round 1: Teixeira comes out aggressively like he said he would, and Davis shoots in. Teixeira sprawls and fight stays standing. Davis shoots in again and tries pushing Teixeira to the fence. Teixeira is pursuing Davis and winging shots. Davis momentarily clinches up with Teixeira. Davis throws a nice front kick before shooting in on a single leg. Teixeira starts looking for a guillotine chok and Davis finally gets the fight down. Davis lands several punches from the side before Teixeira momentarily gets back to his feet. Davis takes Teixeira’s back and lands more than few left hands.
Round 2: Davis is coming in with level changes and throwing punches. Teixeira throws a hard right overhand and Davis lands a well timed takedown. Teixeira reverses nicely and gets back to his feet. Teixeira goes for a guillotine as Davis shoots in but the latter pops his head out. Davis continues to land punches while working from the side. Teixeira gets back to his feet. Texieira takes an accidental thumb to the eye and fight is momentarily stopped. Teixeira charges Davis but is taken down for his efforts.
Round 3: Teixeira lands a left hook to begin the round and Davis clinches up. Teixeira misses on a hook and Davis takes him down. The latter moves into full mount and as Teixeira scrambles, he takes the light-heavyweight’s back. Teixeira tries working his way out but Davis maintains side position. Teixeira eats more shots from Davis before he gets back to his feet. Davis runs Teixeira down again and drags him to the mat. Teixeira has no answers.

Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes
Round 1: Mendes throws a leg kick to begin the fight. Mendes follows up with a left and a right but Aldo counters. Mendes lands a big left and Aldo momentarily goes down. Aldo throws a leg kick. Aldo throws a shot to the body and Mendes just misses with a hard hook. Aldo lands a hard right hand but has a mark on his nose. Mendes plants a couple more hard shots. Aldo takes a finger to the eye and the bout is momentarily stopped. Aldo throws a knee, and in the ensuing scramble, floors Mendes with a hook. Aldo moves into full mount but Mendes slips out. Aldo lands a crushing right hook that was after the bell.
Round 2: Mendes lands another leg kick to begin the round. Aldo counters with a left and Mendes attempts a takedown. In the ensuing scramble, Aldo takes a knee to the groin. Fight is stopped momentarily. The featherweights exchange several strikes but the champion is mostly looking to counter. Aldo lands a right to the body and Mendes fires back with a body kick. Aldo is landing his jab frequently. Mendes counters but takes a hook to the midsection. Mendes throws another leg kick but Aldo checks it. Champ checks another leg kick. Mendes continues to threaten with the left hook.
Round 3: Aldo lands a couple more jabs to begin the round, but takes another poke to the eye. Both men land telling left hands. Aldo plants another left as Mendes throws a leg kick. Aldo follows up with a flurry. Mendes counters with an uppercut and right hand. Mendes lands a crushing right uppercut and stuns the champ, but Aldo fires back with a thumping right hand. Mendes reels backwards and goes for a takedown. Aldo lands a couple more left hands but Mendes secures the bodylock and moves to the Brazilian’s back. The two appear to be talking along the fence. Unbelievable round.
Round 4: Mendes throws a leg kick and front kick to begin the round. Pace has slowed down. Mendes threatens again with the uppercut. The challenger throws a head kick that Aldo blocks. The champion is bleeding from the left eye. Mendes is the busier of the two. The challenger lands another right hand and Aldo starts pressing forward. Aldo lands a series of jabs and attempts a flying knee. As the round ends Aldo’s left eye is badly swollen.
Round 5: Mendes comes out firing and lands a hard left. Aldo returns with a stiff jab. Mendes explodes in and lands a double leg takedown. Aldo gets back to his feet and lands a right hand. Mendes attempts a takedown but Aldo sprawls and is momentarily on the contender’s back. The two get back to their feet. Aldo staggers Mendes with a right but the latter returns fire. Mendes shoots in but Aldo defends again. Both men land hard shots. Aldo attempts flying kick but misses and the final bell sounds. Incredible war.
