Nick Diaz vs. Jay Hieron August 15 Strikeforce Fight Likely

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Jul 28, 2009 at 11:17 am ET23 Comments

Nick DiazNick Diaz will likely fight Jay Hieron at Strikeforce’s August 15 event in San Jose after his original opponent, Joe Riggs, was hospitalized after reportedly suffering a bad reaction to an undisclosed drug and forced to withdraw from the bout.

Gracie Mag first-reported the likely replacement on Tuesday, adding that Phil Baroni was nixed by Showtime as a replacement for the fight and an agreement with Takanori Gomi could not be reached.

Strikeforce has not yet confirmed whether the newly-created Strikeforce welterweight title will still be on the line for the Diaz-Hieron matchup as was planned when Diaz was to square off in a rematch with Riggs.

Diaz (20-7) has won five-straight, including recent victories over Frank Shamrock and Scott Smith, while Hieron, who was to fight Paul Daley at the recently-canceled August 1 Affliction: Trilogy event, has also won five in a row,  most-recently defeating Jason High via first-round knockout in January.

On Monday, a light heavyweight championship bout pitting title-holder Renato “Babalu” Sobral against Gegard Mousasi was added to the Showtime-televised event, which is headlined by Gina Carano vs. Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos, though a lightweight championship unification fight between Josh Thomson and Gilbert Melendez scheduled for the event could be scratched.

I say Diaz will do his “peppering” the whole match and wear out Heiron. I don’t care for that approach but it does get him wins!

  • JOEgun says:

Diaz is a bad ass! Give him a title fight already! Im sure he will defend it for quite a while in Strikeforce. I honestly would like to see him back in the UFC.

  • nightmare says:

most everyone thinks diaz will win. i would agree. ihope he just comes back to UFC!!!

  • ZP580 says:

No I feel pretty fine right now. Is the all caps supposed to u yellin at me, haha. What does my opinion about chic fights have to do with women’s rights…..nothing. I didnt say that women shouldnt be fighting, I meant that it is not worthy of a main event. And no Carano is not hot in the “hot girl” sense, she is hot in a “fighter sense.” Sorry but I’ll take a ring girl over Carano any day. As far as Strikeforce being a legit threat to the UFC Ha, I doubt that. Strikeforce doesn’t have enough fighters, they have a handfull of the same fighters on every card. Not to mention Strikeforce doesnt do UFC money. Get real. quit jockin Carano.

    • fr702 says:

StrikeForce events don’t have the “same” fighters on it every time… Um I know this simply to the fact that I go to StrikeForce events soo ya, not only do they have the “major” StrikeForce events, they also have their “challengers series” and the best womens MMA in NA (easily)…. StrikeForce just signed Gegard Mousasi to a three fight deal, and are signing “up and comers” daily, especially for their challengers series…. I could go into the fighters that they have and such but I’m not going to waste my time….

Gina is rather atractive yet I’m sure I get what you are shooting for, I’ve seen her in person and his way prettier in person than you will know…

I’m going to tell you that Scott Coker has been in this business for quite sometime and seriously is one of the very few promoters in the industry that ZUFFA and Dana White respect, the fact that people think that StrikeForce is some start up org is well just beyond me.. StrikeForce isn’t shooting to take the great UFC down, there is no need for that, they (StrikeForce) just want to do their thing, and bring quality MMA to the fans, and yes they have a very exciting product, they are the best NON ZUFFA org in NA easily, so you know if you can’t handle 4 (as of rightnow) title fights in one night with compeling matches don’t watch, I for one love MMA and will enjoy every damn moment of the card…. Its ok to be pro UFC yet I just wish that people can appreciate the good matches that other orgs bring us, including WVR, DREAM, K~1, StrikeForce etc…..

I might have never been a huge fan of Affliction MMA (thier business practices and such) but I was always down to watch the really nice fights that they brought us, all two cards of them

      F~WAMMA (who has folded too)

      • fr702 says:

sorry one more thing Gina v Cyborg is wayyy better than Kimbo v Tank as a main event, come on man its gonna be a rather good fight not a sorry as EliteXC’s excuses for a main event Scott Coker knows MMA and isn’t in this for a quick buck ala Gary Shaw

  • Finally! Nick Diaz gets some real competition. Jay is by far the toughest fight Diaz has had since coming to strikeforce. Jay is a solid fighter, the fact that he hasn’t been seen in the UFC doesn’t mean crap. I’ve seen him fight and train. Jay has GREAT BJJ defense, his striking is fantastic and his wrestling is really top notch. I’m going out on a limb here and Jay wins by UD.

  • jcohl says:

This is sort of a yes and no proposition.
YES, in that I think that Diaz will beat Hieron, probably by sub, but NO, I have no desire to see Diaz back in the UFC. Furthermore, I would prefer to see his brother Nate join him in Strikeforce, as opposed to stammering his way thru a postfight interview with Joe Rogan.
The LAST thing the big show needs is more poor sportsmanship and trash-talking.
When I was a kid there used to be a phrase for basketball players that went, “I want to be like Mike”, as in Michael Jordan.
Maybe for welterweights they ought to be thinking, “I want to be more like GSP”, and less like some character out of a bad made-for-cable flick…

  • I am really surprised that people have built up Nick Diaz to be so great. Honestly this is the guy who lost a boxing match at 170lbs to Sean Sherk who had about a foot less reach than. He also lost to Joe Riggs and Diego Sanchez respectively, and since leaving the UFC his greatest achievement is subbing Gomi, who has himself been hit and miss lately. He has beaten Frank Shamrock which is a good win on anybody’s record, but Shamrock has long been out of the P4P contendership, and he beat Scott “I never win in the UFC” Smith as well as a small list of “eh” fighters. Diaz is fighting in the PERFECT organization at the moment and I doubt he would want to come back to the UFC. I don’t see Diaz beating the likes of Fitch, Alves, GSP, or a few others at 170lbs, and I don’t see him competing against Marquardt, A. Silva, Dan Henderson or even Bisping at 185. I think Jay will be a perfect challenge to see Diaz face good competition. Jay also doesn’t have that long a list of notable fighters he has beaten, but he stays constant in averaging good impressive wins. I think Nick is over-hyped. Joe Rogan can believe what ever he wants about Nick’s P4P status but he simple hasn’t shown anything against top competition (or even mediocre when he was in the UFC)

    • Justin says:

I too think that Strikeforce is the right place for Nick Diaz. If he decided to leave Strikeforce and come back to the UFC, I don’t think he would last very long. I’m not sure how much longer his brother is going to last, for that matter.

A lot of people keep talking about “Bring Nick back to the UFC” and “why won’t they bring Nick back?” Completely forgetting that he left on his own accord, he wasn’t shown the door, and has continued to pursue other avenues of fighting since then.

      • jcohl says:

I’m really glad you mentioned that, Justin.
You wouldn’t believe how convinced some Diaz supporters are that Dana White somehow kicked Diaz to the curb. The weekend before UFC 100 I had some very drunk Diaz fan [not surprisingly originally from Stockton, CA] repeatedly get in my face to tell me how Dana White feared a strong Latino man that wouldn’t “kiss his a$$” and not only fired him but got him blackballed from MMA because “you sure as sh!t don’t see my boy on TV no more”…and then I had to calmly explain about Strikeforce and Showtime and…well, you get the picture.
        ;)
