Renato “Babalu” Sobral vs. Gegard Mousasi Title Fight Added to August 15 Strikeforce
A title bout between Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Renato “Babalu” Sobral and Gegard Mousasi originally scheduled for Affliction’s recently-canceled August 1 “Trilogy” event is now set to take place at Strikeforce’s August 15 card in San Jose, California.
Strikeforce announced the fight on Monday, officially adding it to the Showtime-televised card that also includes Gina Carano vs. Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos for the first-ever Strikeforce 145-pound women’s championship and a lightweight title unification between Josh Thomson and Gilbert Melendez.
Sobral (35-7) is currently riding a five-fight win streak that includes a second-round submission of Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou in January at Affliction: Day of Reckoning. After losing back-to-back UFC fights to then-champion Chuck Liddell and Jason Lambert, Sobral was cut by the promotion for failing to release a fight-ending submission in a win over David Heath. After wining back-to-back fights, “Babalu” won the 205-pound Strikeforce title last November with a first-round TKO (cut) of Bobby Southworth.
Mousasi (25-2-1) was crowned the first-ever DREAM middleweight champion by winning the promotion’s grand prix with a victory over Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, but vacated the title before his first defense to move up to light heavyweight. He was last in action in May at DREAM 9, defeating Mark Hunt via first-round submission in the opening round of DREAM’s Super Hulk open weight tournament.

But if Mousasi is being borrowed from Dream, wouldn’t that just tie up the belt like Overeem?
If Mousasi wins its no different than what Babalu had been doing being the Strikeforce champ and fighting for Affliction.
Ok, thanks for the clarification, Kris.
Man, that card just got WAY more exciting! I was looking forward to the Overeem fight, but this makes me happy!
hahahaha Justin you know why !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes I do. Nice going.
Glad this fight is still on. This is one heII of a card, you lucky SOB FR. Hopefully they find a replacement for Riggs.
Perhaps Jay Hieron?
Maybe? Miller would be my pick but that wont happen.
Miller? Mayhem?
Yup
Miller’s been fighting at 185, and having a tough cut from what I understand.
out of curiosity has anyone heard anything about Hieron? He has to be one of the more sought out guys with Affliction going under. I know he’s 0-2 in the octagon but last time I checked losing to GSP isn’t that uncommon and losing by TKO due to cut while still a loss isn’t the greatest measure of a fighter just ask Kohsaka…
We could all use a little Mayhem in our MMA lives…
my comment up there at 6:22pm (which is 3:22 my time) is F~ING sweet
Have diaz fight gomi for the 170 belt. REMATCH!!! This time Diaz wins and keeps the belt
Nice to see that Affliction’s loss is Strikeforce’s gain.
I wrote an email to strikeforce begging them to put this on the card hahahah I am sure it wasnt my letter that did it but WOW how cool is this ? This card is getting to be wicked ………..wont be missing it !!!!!
