Posted by Kris Karkoski on Jul 24, 2009 at 9:32 am ET33 Comments

Joe RiggsJoe Riggs has been forced to withdraw from his rematch with Nick Diaz after suffering a “bad reaction to an as of yet undisclosed drug,” according to GracieMag.com.

The bout for the newly-created Strikeforce Welterweight Championship was set to be featured on the Showtime-broadcast of Strikeforce’s August 15 event, which takes place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California and also features Gina Carano vs. Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos for the Strikeforce 145-pound Women’s Championship, a lightweight championship rematch between title-holders Josh Thomson and Gilbert Melendez, and Fabricio Werdum battling an opponent to-be-named after his original foe, Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem, withdrew from the contest earlier this week.

Diaz will reportedly remain on the August 15 card, taking on an opponent to-be-named, which is expected to be announced soon.

    DAMMIT

This card is fallin apart faster than….ummmm…..trilogy

    • fr702 says:

There still are two title fights left on this StrikeForce card and the undercard bouts are usually rather entertaining… Nick is still going to fight so that is good for his fans, Werdum most likely will fight, the card is still good and I will be on the floor watching this one soo I’m rather pumped about it .. Now if Thomson v Melendez gets scrapped I will become really upset I’m rather interested in that fight… StrikeForce and Affliction should just merge the cards and throw a joint venture on the 15th of August…
Babalu v Mousasi (StrikeForce LHW championship bout)
      Belfort v Santiago (#1 MW contender {StrikeForce}bout)
      Nick Diaz v (whomever)
Josh Thomson v Gilbert Melendez (StrikeForce LW title bout)
Gina v Cyborg (StrikeForce womens title bout)
Fedor v Monson or Rogers or Werdum or Gracie (Vacant WAMMA HW title bout)

      Whynot eh?

*Sorry if the spacings are odd I’m posting via BlackBerry

  • EtherBunny says:

Well that sucks. I was getting really pumped about that fight too. I hope that they will find a replacement for Riggs, but who?

  • Jazzkok says:

    FR702,

Damn dude you must be a little dissapointed! I know how pumped your were for this one man. But like you said, they’re still two titles on the line and some decent fights on there. This has been a weird couple of days in the mma world man. Lots of unexpected news, and lots of confusion and misunderstandings. FR you’re ideas of possible matches is kool dude i like bablu vs mousasi. wonder who will be up for fighting diaz in such short notice.

  • Dietrich says:

That sucks worse than the Fedor vs um who is it now Michael Vick?

    • jcohl says:

The only fight I would pay to see Michael Vick in is if they locked him in the cage, covered him in bacon fat with about a dozen of those dogs that he mistreated, and let justice take its course.
      :)

      • carls says:

Ya Vick vs The Littlest Hobo

      • Gunslinger says:

come on why the vick hate????…..so he fought dogs, now yes he mistreated them but the whole dog fighting thing isnt that nad…….Its a sport in brazil…plus they use pitbulls…pitbulls where bred to fight thats what they do……in brazil it is different though…..they actually train there dogs just like mma fighters train for fights they train dogs for fights in brazil i love dogs but when it comes to pitbull fighting in different countrys its actually kinda interesting

      • EtherBunny says:

No, they do extremely cruel things to those dogs. Do not try to justify it.

      • jcohl says:

        Why the Vick hate?!
Gunslinger, aside from the dozen reasons anyone can think of off the top of their head, let me ask you this:
have you seen my avatar, bud?
        ;)

      • EtherBunny says:

I honeslty thought it was a polar bear this whole time. I have an AmStaff at home (which is very similar in breed to a pit), even though he is 70 lbs of solid muscle he is the biggest baby in the world. Fantastic dog, I couldn’t have asked for a better one.

      • jcohl says:

        Awesome, EtherBunny.
And no worries about the polar bear mix-up.
Every Halloween I clip that cape to my dog, a Texas Lacy, who bears a striking resemblence to Krypto the SuperDog from DC Comics, and take her out and about in the neighborhood and snag some KitKats for me and yogurt bones for her.
NLV is a bog dog town.
Best pet I could have asked for, because she travels well and I take her with me on business from my place in North Las Vegas to Orlando and the Jersey Shore.
And she wants a piece of Vick’s a$$…
        ;)

      • carls says:

If you like dogs Jcohl. google “akbash” I had one, coolest dog ever

  • rg says:

now is the time for pat miletich to step back in the ring!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ryan P says:

I doubt StrikeForce and Affliction would merge. StrikeForce doesn’t spend at the level Affliction does, and if it were a merger legally they would be obligated to the Affliction over priced contracts. Affliction would have to go belly up and then StrikeForce would have to sign jobless fighters on a case by case basis for it to be fiscally efficient for StrikeForce’s model.

    • fr702 says:

StrikeForce is more of a financially sound MMA organization than Affliction MMA (which once again isn’t the same company as Affliction apparel < —- which is the parent company or financiare for Afflicition MMA) and the lofty contract prices for um lets say Fedor who is contracted to Affliction MMA/M~1global would be paid primarly by Affliction not StrikeForce.. I will stop there, no need to get into a debate :P

  • joshsmith says:

come on man all the huge fights are starting to get canceled i hope they find diaz a replacement but it doesn’t look that way

  • Dr.doom says:

I’ve said it before guys …… AFFLICTION should team up with certain promotions and sponsor the SUPERFIGHT of the night . Good ad for their clothes ,,,,, huge fight for the fans … and the regular promtion can handle the smaller fights and keeping the fighters .

  • Dr.doom says:

Doesnt matter anyways now …….. trilogy just got cancelled

  • Vinz_Clortho says:

Dana whites minions are out there spiking test results and drugging folks with bad coke again :D

This is totally meant as a joke… or is it? :)

    It is.

  • White_Boy says:

I can see Dana with a crooked smirk on his face, laughing an evil laugh. Wondering if this is Karma for Tom Atecio and Fedor and Nick Diaz? Ahh-haa-haa-ha. Really sucks for everyone that isn’t on the UFC roster.

  • jcohl says:

    DIDN’T WE LEARN ANYTHING YESTERDAY?
I’ll believe that Affliction:Trilogy is cancelled when I read it here, preferably posted by fr702, and not at a site that may or may not be trafficking in veracity, to put it politely…

  • Dietrich says:

I hope Vick gets what he deserves. I hope he is reinstated and a couple of defensive lineman key in on him and send him out like Joe Theisman….

  • Dietrich says:

    Hieron/Diaz doesn’t have the same feel Diaz/Riggs 2…

  • Jaymz says:

Was really looking forward to Diaz vs Riggs. It’s looking like Diaz vs Heiron might just happen.Too bad Diaz and Shields are training partners.
