CSAC Statement on Josh Barnett Positive Steroid Test
SACRAMENTO — The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) has denied a license to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter Josh Barnett after Barnett tested positive for a banned substance.
Barnett’s June 25 drug test came back positive for 2a-methyl-5a-androstan-3a-ol-17-one, an anabolic steroid. CSAC learned of the results July 21 and immediately denied a license for Barnett. CSAC also informed the promoter of Barnett’s August 1 bout against Fedor Emelianenko that the bout would not be approved.
“The license of Josh Barnett was denied pursuant to rule 303 of Title IV of the California Code of Regulations,” said CSAC Interim Executive Officer Dave Thornton. “That rule prohibits the use of certain substances, including anabolic agents, by any boxer or MMA fighter.”
Barnett’s test was observed in the presence of a CSAC representative and the sample was sent to the World Anti-doping Agency test facility at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) on June 25 for processing. CSAC was notified of the results yesterday.
Barnett has the right to appeal the denial of his license.
“Our primary concern is for the health and safety of fighters,” said Thornton. “Anabolic agents and other banned substances put the users of those agents at risk, as well as their opponents. The commission simply will not tolerate their use.”
CSAC has among the toughest drug testing standards of any Athletic Commission in the country. It is the only commission that requires drug tests to be observed and in the presence of a commission representative prior to a bout.

Sucks to be him. Can’t wait to see him back in Japan.
Is it me or does this guy take steroids at the absolute worst time – EVERY TIME. Fights the biggest fight of his career and beat Couture for the UFC title – tests positive. He then gets to redeam himself many years later against arguably the greatest fighter of all time and he tests positive again. Seriously! Stop with the roids already, but especially before monster fights!
So I did about three minutes of research:
The compound he tested positive for is listed as a metabolite for Drostanolone, commonly consumed in its propionate ester form for easier absorption into the body. It is sold under the trade name Masteron. It is a steroid. It has both androgenic (enhancing male characteristics) and anabolic (muscle building) characteristics, with more emphasis on androgenic.
What this means is that it allows people who take it to fill out as opposed to getting huge. It will allow someone to maintain strength while losing weight. it is commonly used by fighters trying to make weight and maintain performance and by professional weight lifters before shows in their leaning out process.
It is what Hermes Franca tested positive for a couple years ago.
You’re welcome.
thank you for that usually I have to do it… I hate breaking out the books for it…
Barnett’s licensure should be denied on the grounds that he’s an a$$-clown, and not because he tested positive for Miracle-Gro or some such.
And bsbiz, thanks for the research, its much appreciated.
That’s pretty harsh, and while I can see that one could argue that position based on the failed drug test, I have to suggest you take a more “grown-up” approach to criticizing Barnett in the future.
I’ll certainly keep your suggestion in mind, Justin.
Maybe to put in in “grown-up” terms, I could say that Barnett temporarily suffered from some form of rectal-cranial inversion as it relates to his failed drug test.
Well positive test or not the fight should go through.I think the athletic comission should get lives. why stop the fight doesnt it make money for our country what a bunch a pussies. Its not like their fighting.Fedor is going to win anyway what the hell? What a bunch of pussie dems let the fight happen thanks
It is this kind of testing that makes MMA fighting LEGAL in the US. It is the reason why any kind of professional fighting is legal. If boxers didn’t have testing and regulation, they wouldn’t be permitted to fight LEGALLY anywhere. Thanks.
Dana white spiked barnetts tea.
considering it was widely speculated Barnett may return to the UFC I’d have to say there’s no possibility of that haha
Its amazing to see some peoples different perspectives on here regarding different subjects. It s incredible to see that Barnett has taken less stick and slating for using an illegal substance and getting himself banned from a fight that alot of fans were looking forward to seeing, than both Lesner and Bisping received for 1 shooting his mouth off after a fight and for the other shooting his mouth off before a fight and overating himself.
What lesner did was wrong and unprofesional and he should stick to doing the talking with his fists but Barnett has put the MMA name on show for all the wrong reasons but yet still receives less flack for it.
Great articles on here though keep up the good work fellas
