Belfort Agrees In Principle To Fight Fedor, Matchup Not Yet Proposed to CSAC

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Jul 22, 2009 at 2:41 pm ET22 Comments

Vitor BelfortMiddleweight Vitor Belfort has agreed in principle to replace Josh Barnett, who tested positive for steroids in an out-of-competition drug test, and fight heavyweight Emelianenko in the main event of “Trilogy” at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, according to MMAjunkie.

Financial negotiations are ongoing between Belfort and Affliction, with the promotion expected to formally announce a replacement later today.

If Belfort is secured as a replacement, the fight must still be approved by the California State Athletic Commission, which has not yet been formally informed of the rumored matchup.

“I’ve heard that rumor as well and that has not been proposed to us and it is not even something we’re looking at seriously right now.  No one has even approached us with that.  Not to say they’re not going to approach us with it but no one has said anything about it at this time,” Assistant Executive Officer Bill Douglas told Bloody Elbow.

Looks like this is the final nail in the coffin for Affliction.

  • EtherBunny says:

I say get Moussai to fight Fedor, that would be a nice matchup.

  • submit24 says:

Ether I agree. If its not mousasi, just cancel it. I’m not defending Barnett, but if he did roids, he prob would have dons a cycle after affliction 2 in January. You’d think he would have pissed clean. Oh well, I’m not watching this ppv unless they really beef it up. If I wanted to watch fedor in a squash match, I’d just watch old pride tapes.

  • Doesn’t matter if Barnett would have fought Fedor or not, Affliction is still going under no matter what, i’m surprised it lasted as long as it did.

  • Fedor shouldn’t even fight in this card anymore, he should really consider coming to the UFC now, but hey he says he doesn’t care about his legacy or his place in MMA so whatever

  • rampage619 says:

well i hope Belfort fights fedor!! hmmm i dont care who he fights i just want too see him in the ring doing what he does best

  • L4E1X5 says:

What? Belfort didn’t want to fight with Mousasi unless Mousasi fought him at 185 pounds right? So is Fedor going to fight with him at 185? NO! So what’s the deal? That’s lame on Vitor’s part, unless he did that because maybe beating Mousasi wouldn’t have done anything for his career. Beating Fedor would for sure boost his career. But still, he’s lame for that, Mousasi is a great fighter and would of gave him a run for his money, I would bet on Mousasi over Vitor anyhow.

  • aznstar says:

Shhhhhhh! Listen…you can hear Dana White laughing in his office in Vegas right now. But what makes this even the sweeter, this event could benefit the UFC GREATLY! If Vitor manages the upset, the UFC can swoop in and scoop Vitor up and all of a sudden you have the new #1 for Anderson with a lot of hype. Plus it would be a great comeback story for Countdown, Vitor has suffered through a lot of stuff. Of course if Vitor losses oh well no sweat off the UFC’s back. Win/win for the UFC.

    • OnlyTrue1 says:

And dont forget they could have more bargining power over fedor “IF” he just got whipped by a 185er ex ufc champ.

Maybe then he would consider fighting in the ufc and Belfort too.

  • bigchris2328 says:

the #1 contender at mw is maia aznstar. then hendo/marquardt. dont be suprised if tito takes on fedor. just throwing that one out there.

  • jcohl says:

    Here’s a thought.
What’s to stop Tito Ortiz from signing to fight Fedor?
Whether he wins or loses he gains some MMA cred and traction, and maybe increases his bargaining position with the UFC.

In some aspects I could almost imagine Dana White encouraging Tito to take a Fedor fight. Unless Fedor knocks out Tito in the first round, Dana will carry on and on about Fedor having his hands full with a 205er that’s sat out for more than a year with a bad back.
After the Fedor fight Tito could return to the UFC with some new interest, and plenty to jaw-jack about regardless of how he does against Fedor.
And if Fedor really is rusty and out of shape from lack of serious competition, it might take him 3 or 4 rounds to finish Tito.
I’ll admit this scenario is unlikely, but its possible.
While I admit Tito’s best days are probably behind him, there is a chance he could nail Fedor with an elbow or something.
    Can Tito beat Fedor?
    No.
Can Tito last long enough to make an interesting fight of it?
Maybe, and I wouldn’t mind dropping $50 to find out.

Lots of cross-promotional permutations here, and this would be a great way for Dana and Tito to rekindle their love/hate bromance…

    • OnlyTrue1 says:

      1 PROBLEM

Tito would have to regrow that altered spine of his and fight someone legit!!

That aint gonna happen no time soon my Friend.

      • chrisl says:

I know you aren’t saying 2 ex champs and the current champ at 205 aren’t legit ;)

if so you are better than that my friend…

      • OnlyTrue1 says:

NO NO NO by fair NO

IN the time given tito to fight, Tito is not going to fight FEDOR no way will TITO step up and take that fight!!

EVEN IF he was Healthy he wouldn’t be the ONE to STEP up and take that fight!!! Aint his style or character.. Is why I said he would have to grow a spine!!! He is known for ducking or not wanting to fight unless forced to fight a champion.

I’m pretty sure he is going to come back and fight some give me fights if possible first!!

Not champion level talent!! That’s what i mean basicly.
