Although John Lineker is ranked #6 in the UFC’s flyweight division, the heavy handed fighter is planning to score a big win on November 8th, and lock up a title shot.
Lineker is scheduled to fight Ian McCall at UFC Fight Night 56, who is currently holding down the promotion’s #3 ranking at 125. Recently, the Brazilian fighter spoke to MMA Fighting.com about the upcoming bout, and here is how Linker said things will go down:
“He called me fat boy [laughs], but I will show him how fast I am. When my hand lands on him, another knockout is coming,” Lineker said. “I only need to land one hard punch he can feel it. I have the heaviest hands in the flyweight division, so I expect a knockout.”
Now if you’re new to MMA you might be wondering what the “fat boy” cut is all about. Lineker, you see, has had issues in the past making weight. The 24 year-old insists he’s put all of that behind him, so much so, he’s hoping to bomb out McCall and face reigning champ Demetrious Johnson next.
“I’ve proved in my fights that I’m ready to fight the champion,” he said, “and I hope this fight (against McCall) is enough to get me a shot at the title.”
While some folks may be tossing out an ‘as if’ right now, if Lineker goes out and stops McCall in impressive fashion, he could secure a title shot. After all, it wasn’t that long ago when Chris Cariaso was tapped to fight Johnson, and he wasn’t a top five ranked flyweight.
Since Johnson already holds wins over contenders like John Moraga, Joseph Benavidez and John Dodson, and the latter is sidelined with a knee injury, it’s completely possible.
Following “Hands of Stone’s” choke out loss to Louis Gaudinot, Lineker has gone 4-1, and his only loss during that time came via decision to Ali Bagautinov. Lineker has scored stoppage wins over Azamat Gashimov, Jose Maria Tome and Alptekin Ozkilic during that time, and we all know how the UFC likes to promote finishers.
McCall-Lineker has “Fight of the Night” potential all over it.
UFC FN 56 will go down in Uberlandia, Brazil, and will feature “Shogun” Rua taking on Jimi Manuwa in the main event (which could also be fantastic).
