Jake Shields ensured he’s headed for more big fights with World Series of Fighting tonight in Edmonton, Alberta, as the UFC vet took out rising welterweight Ryan Ford in the main event’s opening round.
Ford was able to send Shields reeling to the floor early on with a hard jab, but not long after, the feared submission artist took the fight to the floor and secured a rear-naked-choke. Ford was forced to tap-out at 4:29 of round one.
As a result of the win, which marked Shields’ WSOF debut, the fighter is expected to face the winner of the December 13th bout between champion Rousimar Palhares and Jon Fitch. Shields was fighting for the first time since he was decisioned by Hector Lombard at UFC 171 in March.
WSOF 14 also saw Smealinho Rama secure the promotion’s vacant heavyweight belt, as he took out Derrick Mehmen with a series of punches in the opening round.
The latest WSOF card was hosted by Edmonton, Alberta’s Edmonton Expo Centre.
