Chad Mendes may be set to rematch one of the planet’s best fighters at UFC 179, in featherweight champ Jose Aldo, but the #1 contender is doing a lot of talking about Conor McGregor.
Of course, a big reason for this is because McGregor has pretty much slighted all the of the division’s top fighters, including Mendes. This is why Mendes recently outlined why he would “kill” McGregor in a scrap, and why “Money” told “Inside MMA” that he can’t wait to fight the rising star.
While speaking on the AXS TV show Friday, here is some of what Mendes had to say about “Notorious” (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“I mean, don’t get me wrong,” Mendes said.” “I’m not looking past Jose Aldo at all. I mean, obviously I’ve fought him before. I know what he feels like, his strength, his speed, his power, and I truly believe I have what it takes, and I’ve done everything done possible to do it. But God, it’s going to feel so good to punch a hole throughConor McGregor‘s face.”
“The guy has been talking so much crap. The guy has got a huge hype train behind him. It’s going to feel good to get in there and just dismantle this dude.”
Yup, Even if you’re the president of the McGregor fan club, it’s pretty hard to deny the fighter hasn’t been talking a lot of “crap.” Although so far, he’s done a good job of backing it up, and he’s also lined up for a title shot as a result.
Mendes went to argue that either he’ll take out McGregor from the inside, or by taking the highlight reel striker to the mat.
Really, all this talk is premature, as Mendes has to get by a dude who hasn’t lost in 17 fights and already KO’d him in 2012. If you’re wondering, Aldo is a fair sized favourite heading into the fight, in the -280 to -300 range.
UFC 179 will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and will also feature a light-heavyweight bout between contenders Glover Teixeira and Phil Davis.
