Michael Bisping Wants To Face “Top Fighter” at UFC 105, Planning on Rematch with Henderson

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Jul 20, 2009 at 4:36 pm ET68 Comments

Michael BispingMichael Bisping will look to rebound from his UFC 100 knockout loss to Dan Henderson when he returns to action at UFC 105 on November 14 at the MEN Arena in Manchester, England.

“I am gonna kick someone’s backside in Manchester in front of my hometown crowd, then fight again as soon as possible and then rematch with Henderson,” Bisping told the Manchester Evening News. “That wasn’t the best of me in the ring in Vegas and I want another crack at him. I want a top fighter in Manchester, I want to get back up there straight away. That’s what I have told the UFC. I can’t wait to fight in Manchester again, it will be good to fight in front of my own supporters again.”

Welterweight James Wilks and lightweight Ross Pearson, British fighters who won their respective weight classes on The Ultimate Fighter 9 under the coaching of Bisping, are also expected to compete on the card.

No opponents are yet rumored for any of the fighters.

Nate Marquardt? Don’t you think he should settle his business with Maia before you start planning his next fight, or are you thinking Quarry, who is fighting Credeur in September? Maybe Cote could do make his return against Bisping and do us all a favor by KOing him like Hendo did.

      • carls says:

Ya Cote would be a great opponent for him. Plus Cote has supposedly been calling him out. I hope its either Cote or Wandy two guys who we can count on to KO this Fu<ker again.

      • L4E1X5 says:

Ooooh, Wandy? Nice! That’d be awesome, Wanderlei needs a new KO victim!

      • joshsmith says:

i wouldn’t mind seeing cote vs bisping

      • travis sweigart says:

i have heard from a usually reliable source that it will be, MICHEAL BISPING VS PATRICK COTE

      • carls says:

Well if thats the case then I guess we can expect to see bisping run for three rounds again. If Mcfedries, Silva and Leben couldnt hurt Cote then I dont think he will even feel Mikes punches.

      • kell says:

he,d kill henderson in a rematch.

    • L4E1X5 says:

Yeah, Cote has a good chin, he’ll smash Bisping.

  • Eldiablo says:

So what Bisping’s saying is “I’m no f’n match for Hendo yet, so give me someone easy to massage my ego and then maybe I’ll train not to circle left the whole f’n fight”.

    • dbiz says:

Or he’s saying that he still wants tough fights to improve…I know that doesn’t fit with the flag-waving, “U-S-A” chanting image you want of folks here, but you have to respect him for wanting tough fights.

Unless you’re a douche. Then you knock a guy for wanting real fights.

    • BigWorthy says:

I’m a Brit and I’m total with you on the whole ego thing of Bisping. The circling left though I thought that till I re-watched the fight, Bisping had no choice. Hendo just kept cutting him off by side stepping left forcing him to the cage and Hendos clinch was to strong.

All in all us brits need to learn to wrestle, Bisping best tool is his Thai clinch and wrestling under hook just nullify that, hence the whole flailing arms in the air **** in the clinch.

  • Gunslinger says:

OKAMI!….ill laugh if bisping loses again after already talking crap about beating up someone else and thinking he deserves a hendo rematch

    “I WANT BJ’S BELT”

  • windmiller says:

funny stuff! he still can’t admit he was out classed by a bad asss?!!!

  • EtherBunny says:

Didn’t he just prove that he is not ready for top tier talent with the Hendo match?

  • fr702 says:

Well we all know and Bisping knows that he is not a top tier MW, he got destroyed by Henderson and he won’t be getting a rematch anytime soon, he simply isn’t good enough YET… So have your fight in England get your win and realize you have probably a year or two til you are tops, should be interesting to follow his next few fights…

  • ckdiesel says:

this to me sounds like he is saying that his loss was a fluke. and we all saw that was no fluke. he was completely outlclassed. i think a rematch with Hendo would be like BJ rematch with GSP.

    pointless…

  • TheCoach says:

Wandy at M/W great idea, and the loser retires. Either way the fans win.

  • Jazzkok says:

Isn’t it funny how Michael “down for the count” bisping, can’t wait to run home and fight in front of his “home supporters”? Dude, i think wanderlei’s a fu7&*n awesome idea. We will see him out cold twice in a row. Wow, this dude is hella full of himself. “that’s what i’ve told the ufc. i’m fighting a top contender then i’m rematchin henderson”…Since when are joe silva and dana taking orders from some overrated, barely top 15 fighter?

He’ll never get a rematch with dan henderson. Like never. Henderson is on his way up to a title shot and my guess is that unless hendo wins the title (very possible) AND bisping somehow manages to get passed hmm i don’t know, marquardt, maia, anderson silva, cote, okami…and get a title shot then a rematch is never going to happen dude. SOrry.

    • jcohl says:

      I agree jazzkok.
Bisping would need a miracle in order to sign a rematch with Hendo.
Unless I’m very wrong, Hendo’s next rematch probably involves the Spider, and not some jaw-jacking kickboxer STILL clueless about a well-rounded MMA skillset.

      • goblue says:

hendo’s next rematch is with franklin at UFC 103 I just read elsewhere…I would like to see Bisping fight Cote, would be a fun fight imo

    • kell says:

bisping is full of himself, but so are every u.s.a chanting ego maniac, you gotta remember that MMA isnt that popular in the u.k so its not often we get a decent fighter, give bisping a bit of respect for even stepping in the ring with a beast like henderson.

  • ZP580 says:

Seems like the Brit still hasn’t learned his lesson. He just continues to run his mouth. Who do yall think? Sonnen or Okami but they are already taken. How bout Cote’s return fight or possibly Quarry. Maybe even Belcher or Sexyama? I know, how bout Grove after his fight w/ Almeida? Thoughts?

  • JL says:

If he’s sincere (and I believe he is) then good for him. He knows what his critics think and say about him. And he knows that the only way to get them off his back, and become a better fighter in the process, is to take on the best fighters that Dana White and Joe Silva will give him and get some wins against those guys. And I hope he does get better. Because the more really good fighters you have, the more really good fights we get to see. And I think the MW division could use some more really good, young fighters.

  • jcohl says:

After reading the article and some of the posts, I’m not sure whats expected of Michael Bisping after UFC 100.

Yes, he got KTFO’ed by a superior fighter, but everyone who understands MMA knew that was coming. Some thought it might be a T/KO, and some thought maybe a g-n-p/ref stoppage-type win [like myself], or maybe even a brutal 3 round UD for Hendo after he rag-dolled Bisping for 15 minutes, and I even read one post suggesting a Hendo win by submission.
Point is I can’t remember anyone calling the fight for the Count, other than his trainers over at the WolfsLair and Bisping himself.

He’s taken a week or so to make sure he still knows all his numbers and letters and remembers his name and address, and now wants to get back to work.
    Good for him.
Of course he’s going to ask for a fight in the UK, and of course he’s going to say, “give me a tough fight”.
What would the expectation be, that he’d be quoted as asking for some tomato can straight off of an Indian reservation casino somewhere? A pumped-up welterweight from Japan who promises to keep it standing? Some sort of NHB/toughman from the state fair circuit?

And finally, as it relates to Bisping’s comments, whats he supposed to say?
“Yes, I was in fact nowhere near ready to deal with a fighter of Hendo’s skill and experience, and yes I was petrified that he’d use his Olympic level Greco to handball me off of the cage, and oh yes my bowels released when he KTFO’ed me”.

If Bisping is going to continue in this sport, he needs to say and do the right things, such as, “at UFC 100 I had a bad night”, or “I came out flat”, or even that his nerves got to him and the bright lights of the event dissettled him.
The LAST thing he wants to say is, “yeah, I’m pretty much $hit at MMA, and should go back to kickboxing or K-1″ or some such.

A good fight for Bisping would in fact be against brand new MW Wanderlei Silva, but only if the UFC wants to see the face of MMA in the UK get KTFO’ed twice in a row. I’m working under the assumption that Dana White isn’t ready to scrap his UK point-man quite yet.
I would have suggested either Yushin Okami or Chael Sonnen, but they’ve already been booked at 104, so maybe we’ll go with Dan Miller?
    Just a thought…

    • Jazzkok says:

see now that’s a good point jcohl,

But to be honest, i didn’t wnt to see bisping just lose, lose a decision, get ground and pounded on, get submitted, i wanted to see him go to sleep dude. I wished this for two reasons.

      1.) Because c’mon, i can’t stand that dude…duh!! who can??!

2.) Because, maybe deep down inside, i thought that by him get knfo, that he’d get humbled a little bit. Damn was i wrong dude!

So to be honest, yeah, i kind of did expect him to say something like “henderson’s a great fighter and he caught me with his right hand. I was ready, but the nerves got to me. I realized i have some things to work on”…not a chance on earth with this guy. Instead he goes on to say “i’m go to kick someones backside in front of my home supporters. I’m going to get a top mw, beat him and then rematch henderson”!!

Who do you know, that just was the victim of knock out of the year, who wakes up and says all this nonsense?

I hope they do give him a “doomsday”, or mccarthy, so then he can get another top fighter and again get knfo. maybe then we’ll see some humilty and respect for the sport.

    • OnlyTrue1 says:

      Fella’s what up

Yeah He did right by wanting to get back in their as soon as possible and fight!!

Good on him IMO. He took his whooping like a man and still wants more!! Go for it that’s to be commended.

Better that than making tons of excusses and complaining, hey vent your anger out by beating another fighter and call out a top fighter!

Outside of being an annoying Brit with a mouth he represents what we want a fighter to do FIGHT and Fight often!!!

  • Jerod says:

I see no way whatsoever that Dana feeds Bisping a legit opponent in Manchester. Bisping is going to get spoonfed yet another Charlie McCarthy’esque cookie cutter in order to keep the UK’s golden goose back above water. To be perfectly honest, I don’t even think Bisping even deserves to fight a “top fighter.”

  • Jazzkok says:

Dudes i just read on mmajunkie that henderson is fighting franklin @ ufc 103!!! they totally messed up dude!! i quit as a fan!

    • ZP580 says:

I saw that too on fiveouncesofpain.com. Thats crap. I dont wanna see that one again so soon. When is the UFC gonna give Franklin a real 205 contender a stop makin Henderson jump around.

      • ckdiesel says:

damn and i was so pumped that maybe, just maybe, by something other then an act of God, that Hendo would fight Anderson, and Rich would fight Tito. BOGUS!!! but theres been alot of bad matchmaking going on lately i.e. “shogun” vs. Machida?

      • dbiz says:

After Rampage turned down the Machida fight in favor of a post-TUF match up with Rashad, who else was there at 205?

I’m not happy about Rua getting the shot, but they had to put someone up or Machida would be idle for the better part of a year.

      • nightmare says:

yep the shogun machida fight is bogus but who cares another knockout for machida i guess help him build his legacy.

  • bigchris2328 says:

so by hendo fighting rich again, that means tito isnt going to be signed in time, if at all???

hendo got boned hard on that deal. too many ppv’s too close together contributes to this crapp. i called it on the forums that bisping would return to his “im the best mw ever” attitude, i didnt think it would be this soon. who is this guy? he got a win over hamill when he clearly lost, got lay-ups his whole way until hendo, gets put to sleep for a week by hendo and he is demanding top competition and then a rematch with hendo. during the hendo fight when did he show he belonged in the ring with hendo? its not like he made one small mistake with hendo and got caught. the entire fight he circled INTO hendo’s power. The ENTIRE FIGHT!!!

more than likely he gets a “easy” win. maybe quarry, but he is tough, so i dunno. I know before maia was signed to fight marquardt he said he wanted bisping. maia is way too good to take on bisping though, but i would love to see maia do a gogoplata or some awesome sub on bisping and break his arm or choke him out. but thats just me.

    • jcohl says:

bigchris2328, while I admit that you Texas folk got screwed out of a Tito-Franklin main event, I don’t think you can complain too much about Hendo-Franklin 2.
Definitely a man event caliber fight. And it could have been much less “main event”, if they’d went with Luiz Cane.
103 is as stacked as it can be, considering talent availability, so now Texas can put down their six-guns and stop all of their hootin’ and hollerin’, put on your best stetson hat and string tie, polish your snakeskin boots, mosey on over to the arena, tie up your horse at the hitching post, hit the saloon for a few shots of firewater, and sit a spell and watch the fights.
      :)
Or is that me being too “Texas” for you bigchris2328 ;)

    • dbiz says:

Anyone who says they want to see a fighter get injured…is not a fan. Sorry, but that’s a fact.

Here’s a question for you, and a purely hypothetical one obviously. If Bisping had won, would you still be calling him overrated and saying that he sucks and doesn’t belong in the ring with “top fighters”?

And that isn’t just to you, it’s the everyone here, ultimately.

  • yorkyid says:

I agree with Jcohl to a certain extent. On many other pages we have talked about ‘heel’ fighters and I think this is what Bisping is. Dana wants him there to be the foreign guy the USA chanting fans can hate, and that is fine, you need that for some casual fans. Only problem is, I as someone in England, am not sure Bisping is good enough. He is perfect because of his mouth, he can cause controversy by just talking all sorts of nonsense, and it works as people get so riled up.
I think he had to get back quickly because Dana was already planning for him to be in England for the UFC event, he was just hoping that Henderson didn’t hurt him too much when he did win or that some how Bisping would win and would come back home in glorious fashion.
The statement he made in an English paper was as humble as Bisping can get I think, he said he lost, plain and simple, and yes he has to say he wants to come home and kick someone’s arse because he needs to start selling the tickets now, so it sells out, Dana makes lots of money, and Dana can smile :)
Opposition wise, I would love it to be Wandy, as then I would certainly try and get tickets, but im not sure….
    Sorry for length.

  • seemore says:

congratulations to bisping on eating solid foods again after that dusting…and he now knows who knocked him out…the smile on my face is still there from that lovely saturday night…

  • bigchris2328 says:

i wonder if the ufc is going to charge full price for 105 and 106 seeing how they are a week apart. is one going to be for free on spike? has anyone heard about that?

  • Nightmare says:

face cote so he can be Koed again provened he is really not that good

  • James says:

Let’s see how he does in against Wanderlie Silva so he can another lesson of respect delivered to him. He showed Hendo no respect and got Knockedc the F_ck Out. Just imagine what an intense freak like Wanderlie would do to his punk a$$. Bisping talks garbage 24/7 and he needs to watch the reply and have someone show him that he is not as good as he thinks he is. Who in their right mind would circle left into Hendo’s power punch right hand? Dana, please give him a top flight competitor and make that Wanderlie Silva. Then you can justify giving either fighter a title fight after Hendo gets his.

  • L4E1X5 says:

I think Bisping is a good fighter, but he wants to prove he’s in the top of the MW division. But the problem is, is that he just suffered a massive lost to his first top competitor. He needs to take it easy.

  • abend says:

im pretty sure its gonna be wandy vs bisping

  • Gunslinger says:

Ive always knew bisping was over rated ever since i watched him almost get submitted by elvis sinosic at ufc 70 when they brought in the king of rock n rumble to be a can for bisping….man that would have been funny of bisping wouldnt have gotten out of that kimura

  • bigchris2328 says:

dbiz your telling me that honestly you wouldnt want to see bisping get choked out or be taught a lesson again? i wasnt with you when you were watching 100, but i am almost a 100% sure that when hendo ktfo’d bisping you were in awe and enjoyed it. [pure speculation on my part.]

obviously bisping hasnt learned his lesson about respecting other fighters, martial arts is about respect, when your opponent doesnt have respect for you or anyone else, they need to be taught respect. if that means choking them out, snapping their arm, or putting them to sleep so be it. thats my opinion. i dislike fighters who run their mouths, think their the best when their not, and disrespect others. its okay to have confidience, but bisping is taking it way too far imo.

  • JOEgun says:

Yeah I also remember when Elvis dropped Bisping with a knee. That would have been a sweet upset. I think Cote would be a good fight for Bisping. Wanderlei would kill him. Cote might even know him out too. Then where would that leave Bisping.

  • LogTan11 says:

Even thoough I think Franklin beat Hendo the first time this fght does nothing for either fighter. I thought Hendo was moving down in weight? That is some weight to gain and be in GOOD fighting shape at a new weight for Hendo so soon. Anyone heard about Hughes vs Fitch yet?

  • kokid says:

I agree with carls that bisping shound fight cote or wandy both guys should ko bisping wanderle for sure needs a win and bispings a name that will get him to the top quick and maybe give him His old pride swag back but if bisping pulls it out I think wanderle is done as a fighter but another big k.o loss for bisping will send him back to the free cards where he belongs

    • travis sweigart says:

bisping, according to a source of mine, will fight patrick cote at ufc 105.

      • nightmare says:

that be sweet another knockout to cote! back to his winning ways and bisping goes to sleep again. i was happy with cote or wanderie then wanderlei should fight someone and win then have a cote vs. wanderlei fight that would be cool

  • JAI says:

I’d like to see the potential match ups including Bisping.

    V. Silva -vs- Bisping:

This definitely the biggest and highest profile fight but it may be to dangerous of a fight for him being that he’s on the come back.

    Bisping -vs- Cote:

This is probably the most explosive match up for Bisping and probably the one that I’d like to see the most. With Cote coming fresh off of an injury, Bisping might be catching him at the right time while he rusty. However, this is also a very dangerous match up for Bisping as he’s returning from a brutal KO loss in his last bout.

    Bisping -vs- Belcher

This is an exciting match up for the The Count as well. Belcher has been on fire of late with two very good showings in his last two fights against some two pretty high profile opponents (Kang and Sexyama). The judges gave the fight to Sexyama, but I really felt that he won that fight in my opinion. This is an exciting fight and probably the LEAST dangerous.

    • carls says:

If you want to post what fights you would like to see, other than these try the forums man. Theres a thread right now called possible match-ups. You might allready know but I just thought id mention it.

  • jcohl says:

Wow, I can just imagine the Brit crowd reaction if Bisping loses to a guy with a French accent, if a Cote fight is signed.
I’ve only been to the UK twice, but one thing I picked up pretty quick was that the French and the British REALLY don’t like each other.
Cote is a better mact-up for the Count that Hendo, thats for sure.
I can’t recall seeing either fighter going for anything that could ever be described as a throw or takedown, so the strike-first crowd should be pleased with this one, although I have to admit it would be a bit of a letdown for Cote coming off of an impressive title bout with Silva.

  • Zack says:

he aint gunna fight wandy i guess wandys wants to spend time with his family..Cote nd bisping would be a good fight.. id like to see bisping get KOd again
or if kendal grove wins at 101, i think theyd have a great fight
but all in all, bisping has his head in his @ss…a rematch with henderson is just plain dumb.. hendo is fightin franklin anyway at 103.. a good rematch but something im not lookin foward to that much..
    USA!!

    • BigMouth says:

      Bisping bashing blah, blah, blah

Give it at a rest for a bit, or all you keyboard warriors will have worn you fingers out by the time something meaningful to comment about comes around.

Can’t help but think the “I hate Bisping” campaign has been hammered out to gloss over, or rather bury, Team UK’s triumph in TUF 9 and how good a coach Bisping was compared to Hendo.

  • Vinz_Clortho says:

Bisping was not as good coach LOL. (not meant as fighter bashing meant as fact)

Really tho the guy talks so much ****.. he needs to stop.. I couldn’t believe that he didn’t even at least respect hendo at all.. I mean the guy thinks he is good..

He has never won against a top fighter – fact
He has no punching power – fact
He has no ground game – fact
His idea of winning is stick and move/survive while winning on scorecards – fact
UFC is now huge in UK, free ride over, he’s headed for another promotion soon – fact
Wandi will eat him – fact

    • BigMouth says:

I love the “he talks ****” line forever coming out. Find me some exact clips or quotes of him talking **** or trash (isn’t that what all fighters do anyone?) then I’ll believe all the petty bashing about his mouth.

And, um, yeah, he was a good coach. Can you remember which Team won TUF 9 ??? Can’t wait for Team USA vs Team Canada, are all the keyboard warriors gonna turn on GSP if he’s coach and starts talking up how good his Team is?

And those Facts are a big vague, flesh ‘em out please?

Not beaten a top fighter? Valid yeah, but only Sanchez, Forrest, and Rashad have come from TUF and beaten top (non-TUF) fighters, and also lost to them, so far

No punching power? He’s not a KO puncher, and he knows it, that’s why he utilises the clinch and hit&run tactics to either swarm guys for a TKO or points victory

No Ground Game? Trains with Mario Neto and Ricco Rodriquez for god’s sake, and he did pretty well stomping Sinosic and Day on the ground, and neutralising Rashad’s gnp

His idea of winning is stick and move/survive while winning on scorecards – Um, yeah? Worked against Leben, who got an awesome punch and adamantium chin, and should have worked against Hendo if he’d gone in with the same gameplan.

UFC is now huge in UK, free ride over, he’s headed for another promotion soon – First fight against Sinosic was just to establish him in UK, c’mon, you think Forrest wasn’t given an easy time early on when he fought guys like Sinosic and Mahood? Apart from Day, who was a late replacement, his fights against Hamill and Leban were both competitive.
“He’s headed for another promotion” there’s that hate, cool down man.

Wandi will eat him – We’ll see, I don’t make predictions for fights, but i’ll make this one. IF Bisping does fight Wandi and wins, we’ll get a tirade of ‘Wandy was a shot fighter’ ballz.
