Joe Lauzon has won 13 fight night bonuses during his memorable career, and with his latest fight booked, the lightweight has real good shot of landing another. How’s that you might ask?
Well, the UFC has announced that Lauzon is stepping in for the injured Norman Parke at UFC 180, who was scheduled to fight Diego Sanchez. Yes, that Diego Sanchez, the ridiculously aggressive fighter whose resume is replete with “Fight of the Night” bonuses…
While Parke’s fans will be sad to hear about his withdrawal, which apparently is the result of a knee injury, no one should be complaining about the prospect of watching Lauzon-Sanchez.
Sanchez (25-7) is in need of a convincing win, as the veteran’s split decision victory over Ross Pearson in June was widely called BS. Before that, Sanchez was handed decision defeats by Gilbert Melendez and Myles Jury, and even Sanchez’s UD win over Takanori Gomi last March was also questionable.
Lauzon (24-9) will be looking to build on the TKO victory he recorded over Michael Chiesa last month, which came via doctor stoppage due to a cut. Prior to that fight, Lauzon worked his way to a unanimous decision win over Mac Danzig at UFC on FOX 9 last December. The noted finisher has gone 3-2 in his last 5 contests.
UFC 180 will mark the first time the promotion has held an event in Mexico, and the card will be hosted by the Mexico City Arena. In the main event, heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez will take on Fabricio Werdum.
