After the UFC announced on Tuesday that Cung Le’s been suspended for nine months, for apparently flunking a recent drug test, more than a few people said the suspension was long enough. Well, on Wednesday, the promotion confirmed that it had made an error, and that in fact, Le’s been suspended for one year.
Here is the follow up statement which recently appeared on UFC.com:
After review by UFC Senior Management, an error was discovered regarding the length of Cung Le’s suspension due to a failed drug test. While originally stated as nine months, the correct suspension period to be enforced is 12 months.
Le tested positive for an excess level of Human Growth Hormone in his system following his fight at UFC Fight Night in Macao, China on August 23. He will still be required to pass a drug screening before being allowed to compete in the UFC following the completion of his suspension.
The clarification will likely please some fans and observers, particularly those who are really concerned about performance enhancing drugs in MMA.
The 42 year-old Le, who was taken out by Michael Bisping in the fourth round at UFC FN 48, has yet to make a statement regarding the suspension.
