Tomasz Drawl To Make Middleweight Debut Against Drew McFedries at UFC 103

Drew McFedriesDespite two-straight victories at light heavyweight, Tomasz Drwal will drop down to middleweight and make his 185-pound debut against slugger Drew McFedries at UFC 103 on September 19 in Dallas, Texas, according to MMA Weekly.

After having his 13-fight win streak that spanned more than 3 years ended by Thiago Silva in his Octagon debut in September 2007, Drwal (16-2, 2-1 UFC) rebounded to earn back-to-back knockout wins over Ivan Serati and Mike Ciesnolevicz in 2009.

Regarded for his knockout power, McFedries (8-5, 4-4 UFC) had lost two-straight fights to Mike Massenzio and Thales Leites before knocking out Xavier Foupa-Pokam in just 37-seconds in his most-recent fight in May. He had previously defeated Marvin Eastman, Jordan Radev, and Alessio Sakara in the UFC, while suffering losses to Martin Kampmann and Patrick Cote.

Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic vs. Junior dos Santos is expected to co-headline UFC 103 alongside a main event featuring Rich Franklin against an opponent to-be-announced. Mike Swick vs. Martin Kampmann, Josh Koscheck vs. Frank Trigg, Sean Sherk vs. Gleison Tibau, and Efrain Escudero vs. Cole Miller are also rumored for the card.

  • Justin says:

You Texans are going to get a pretty good show IMO.

    • goblue says:

yeah i agree this card is turning out to be pretty solid imo…who do you think they will match up against franklin tho? Not a whole lot of options with other fighters already fighting…Luiz cane maybe? Bring someone from outside in? Doesn’t seem like there are many major draw options at this point so should be interesting

      • Justin says:

Yeah, maybe Cane, but who knows, maybe Coleman, he wasn’t on the medical suspension list for 100. Or maybe they throw Krzysztof Soszynski in there (though, K IMO is well below Franklin’s ability).

    • goblue says:

i would like to see a franklin vs forrest fight at some point down the road too but obviously not on this card

  • carls says:

Ya this should be a good grappling match.

  • jcohl says:

Good Lord could they stack that 103 card anymore?
I know a lot of the Texas-area folk were pretty down on the event, and some were talking about opting out of 103 for UFN 19 in neighboring Oklahoma, but IMO the UFC is doing everything it can to stack the card with as much available talent as they can pull together.

Any clue as to why Drwal dropped to MW?
It doesn’t seem to me that running the MW gauntlet of Hendo, Marquardt, and Maia to get to Anderson Silva is any more appealing that running the LHW gauntlet of Griffin, Evans, and Jackson to get to Lyoto Machida…

    • Justin says:

Yeah, but Drwarl already lost to T. Silva who is by no means the top of the LHW division.

      • jcohl says:

Good point, but I had thought maybe because that was almost 2 years ago it wasn’t as much as a factor, but you’re probably right.
However if Drwal loses to McFedries, I wonder what he does then?
No disrespect to Drew McFedries, but he’s by no means the top of the MW division…

      • L1E4X5 says:

Why would Thiago not be the top of the LHW division?

      • jcohl says:

L1E4X5 – the consensus top of the UFC LHW division is Machida as champ, and then you have a pile-up of Jackson, Evans, Griffin, and Rua. Somewhere in there is Keith Jardine, Wanderlei Silva [before dropping to 185], Brandon Vera, and now Rich Franklin.
Where exactly do you see Thiago Silva ranking amongst those names?
Most likely no higher than 5, best case scenario. I don’t know about you, but I don’t consider being ranked #5 the “top of the division” in any weight class, regardless of how stacked it may be.

Not to call you out or anything, just trying to answer your question.

  • bigchris2328 says:

dangerous matchup for drawl, mcfriedes has some very heavy hands. i saw what he did to the X-man a few events back. i think drawl dropped to 185 because he didnt want to get vicisously ko’d by the top dogs at 205, at 185 he might get ko’d by hendo, but not brutally by the others.

    • jcohl says:

      Good point, bigchris2328.
It’s one thing to lose a decision or have to tap, but getting knocked into the middle of next week or slammed thru the mat by someone like Rampage is a pretty daunting propostion even for the heartiest competitor…

  • Oldman420 says:

There are some heavy hands at 185 though, pretty sure cote, mcfedries and A. Silva knock some pretty good blocks off.

  • Gunslinger says:

no doubt mcfedries vs travolta will be a good fight…but i would have much rather watched my boy james irvin vs mcfedries(theres a 99% chance that fight wouldnt go past 20 seconds)

  • bigchris2328 says:

irvin has got gouveia next i believe at 103 or something. he better come prepared for that fight. gouveia is a tough mofo.

  • abend says:

Im happy i bought tickets to this one, franklin vs. henderson II for the main event. Ill be ringside with my Hendo shirt on

  • Jesus says:

yea drew mcfedries has some heavy hands! but people are forgetting that tomasz drwal has some heavy hands too! he almost put thiago silva to sleep if it wasn’t for his cardio… Drwal by Vicious KO! I like the move to MW by Drwal he looked out of shape and had poor cardio in LHW but with a lot of power
