If you had told someone several months back that Andrei Arlovski would be a top ten ranked, UFC heavyweight by fall, the words “you’re out of your damn mind” may have followed. But, after the former champ smashed through “Bigfoot” Silva at UFC FN 51 last weekend, here we are.
The UFC has released its latest rankings following the September 13th card, and Arlovski has moved up, not just a couple of spots, but 7 positions and is now #7. Silva, on the other hand, has crashed from the #4 slot and is now #9.
Everyone knew that if Arlovski scored the upset win it would be huge for “The Pitbull”, and this is just one example of that. Now the only heavyweights that are ahead of him are Mark Hunt, Josh Barnett, Stipe Miocic, Travis Browne, Junior dos Santos and Fabricio Werdum. Of course, Cain Velasquez sits a top of all contenders as heavyweight champ.
Another interesting development, in terms of the rankings, is the addition of Holly Holm. The undefeated MMA fighter and decorated boxer is now ranked #15 in the women’s 135 division.
The promotion’s pound-for-pound rankings also have changed, as former bantamweight champ Renan Barao dropped a spot to #10, while welterweight king Johny Hendricks moved to #9.
The UFC’s rankings are voted on by a group of media members following each of the promotion’s events.
