im with you jcohl, espically with alves saying he will ko gsp he will need to make weight which he has a problem doing, monday-tuesday he was at 183, he needed to drop 13 pounds within 3-4 days, i promise you that gsp was maybe at 175 at the most on monday. its hard to lose 13 pounds in a month let alone 3-4 days. i just got through watching the countdown to 100 and was laughing hard when mir said he would beat brock in the standup game, when bisping said he will ko hendo[which wandy and rampage or anderson didnt do] and when he said hendo wont take bisping down. that was all hilarious to me.
Hendo posted last night via Twitter/Facebook that he was 12 lbs over… I highly doubt that GSP is only 5 lbs over, or that Alves will have a problem dropping 13 from Monday (8 from the presser yesterday). I dropped 5 lbs of water weight in just a 2 hour summer football workout in high school, and I am a small guy.
While I think that Alves will eventually make weight, I do think there is a fair amount of justice in him “Travis Lutter-ing” his way out of a title shot after making all that middle school noise about being a bad man.
And as unlikely as it sounds, Frank Mir’s best shot to pull this thing out against a prime specimen Neanderthalic Rex like Brock Lesnar is to use cage command and accurate technical strikes to keep him off-balance and unfocused until he can somehow hook and submit the bigger man a second time.
I know how that will read, but I can’t figure out for the life of me that Mir can beat Lesnar any other way.
I think Mir has the talent to pull it off, but just like in dating size matters, and thats how that goes.
Bisping KO’ing Hendo is laughable, because if memory serves Hendo’s never been KO’ed, and Bisping in spite of his UFC UK poster-boy status hits about as hard as a case of the sniffles.
Although if I was as outclassed as Bisping is against Hendo, I would talk as much $hit as he does too.
It should be a decent enough fight, but I can’t imagine Hendo not using his Team Quest skill-set to run Bisping up into the cage, clinch game him into a takedown, and pound him out. It’ll be tough for Bisping to do all of that jaw-jacking in that irritating “London calling” accent when he’s eating cage, struggling to stay on his feet, and trying to figure out the solution to dirty boxing.
This is Hendo’s fight to lose, and a good barometer of whether he’s going to eventually make a serious run at the MW title, instead of that half-a$$ed fight he gave Anderson Silva when he first came over from PRIDE.
His supporters and sponsors deserved better, and I’m patiently waiting…
Hey, Mir did something that Fedor couldn’t do in 3 tries, that Barnett couldn’t do in 2, he finished Nogueira with a KO. Don’t count him out on that front.
hey, lets discredit wins! you’re telling me that because Mir finished Nog and Fedor didn’t makes him better or something? Mir fought a completely out of shape tired fighter and tko’d him. Anyone would have TKO’d Nog that night.
Hey, lets discredit anyone not willing to give Frank Mir the respect he’s earned in the Octagon!
Nogueira is a grown man, and an experienced MMA fighter. If he wasn’t physically ready to go, he should have pulled out of the fight. He didn’t, and he got beat. Case closed.
And the topic of Fedor is always open for debate. The guy has sat on his @$$ for nearly 4 years fighting also-rans and sideshow attractions. We’ll tell from his fight with Josh Barnett how much “PRIDE” Fedor has left in him, and how committed he is to the sport that made him a millionaire by what he does after the Barnett fight.
Or we could stay on topic and leave Fedor out of it, considering he’s not fighting this weekend…
Im backing Lesnar to Ko Mir round 1
(if it goes past the 3rd round i would nt be suprised if both fighters were completely gassed out anyway)
GSP to win
And Henderson on decision.
i agree, i posted that Brock will score a ko or tko in the 2nr or 3rd round, but he can pull it off in the 1st if he does everything right. mir greatly overrates his own stand-up “i mean come on, i dropped Noguera”, Noguera is not a stand-up fighter nor has he ever been a ko artists so i’m not sure if Mir is aware of that. I feel that Mir will gas out before Brock does, Brock always keeps himself in decent shape.
Brock Lesnar gassing before Frank Mir?
mk4, don’t forget that Lesnar will be carrying like 280 into the cage come fight time, Mir maybe 240. In the Couture fight, Lesnar appeared to be slowing at around the 7 minute mark. While I agree that Mir is PUBLICLY overrating his striking and dismissing Lesnar, I’m sure privately he’s tailoring his game to try and deal with an accomplished college wrestler who will outweigh him by nearly 40 pounds.
Mir talking $hit is him just trying to get into Lesnar’s head. It’s an old trick that might just work on a guy who’s had a grand total of 4 pro MMA fights.
Although Frank Mir has never been known as a cardio machine by any stretch of the iMMAgination, I’m pretty sure he can keep Lesnar at bay for 7 or 8 minutes until Lesnar’s tank starts running low, assuming Lesnar approaches this fight with Mir more carefully than he did their last meeting.
And if Lesnar decides to bum rush Mir like he did last time to start the fight, swinging wildly and wasting energy while connecting on an illegal strike to the back of the head that caused a re-start, he’ll wind up being too aggressive, putting himself in a bad position, which is the kiss of death against a submission guy like Mir.
But hey, Brock already knows all about that, right?
i think that Brock won’t be foolish and just rush Mir, if he manages to get Mir to the ground i strongly feel he will overwhelm Mir and make him get tired. I honestly feel that Brock has learned from his previous mistakes and will not make them this fight. If Mir really thinks he has great striking that will play good for Brock, he’ll Heath Herring Mir in 2 seconds.
Brock, imo will push mir to his conditioning limit. Although brock carrys more weight, his athleticism is stronger and his pace can be overwhelming if you let him drag you into his kind of fight. I think brock respected couture a whole lot in their fight and that’s why we didn’t really see the pace he put on against mir in their first fight and against herring. Having said that, brock will not give mir the same respect he gave randy and will put a lot of pressure on mir, so the conditioning will come in to play, but if mir can’t hang, it really won’t matter that brock is heavier.
Brock by 187 in the 1st
St Pierre by tko 3rd
Hendo by tko 2nd
“sexyama” by sub 2nd
paulo thiago by sub 2nd
bonnar by tko 2nd
danzig by d
goooooooo Mirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Lesnar by decision
gsp by decision
hendo by sub round 2
Just to clarify, I’m posting on HOW Mir CAN beat Lesnar, not THAT Mir WILL beat Lesnar. I’ve posted previously that I think it’s close to impossible to beat a HW opponent that outweighs you by 15-20% twice in a row in less than 11 months.
Mir has the talent, but not the size. There’s a difference between being better than your opponent or just plain bigger.
As Randy Couture knows well.
Personally I think the 30-40 pound weight advanatge that Lesnar brings into the Octagon is probably too much for most HW’s to deal with. Keeping in mind that Lesnar’s weight advantage is in muscle, not fat, most HW’s will get overwhelmed by Lesnar’s narrow but quality skill-set of power and college wrestling.
However also keeping in mind that Lesnar’s carrying 280 pounds of muscle into the cage, there is no choice but to take a hard look at the cardio issue. Sixty seconds rest after 300 seconds of non-stop athletic activity isn’t an ideal framework under which Brock Lesnar will be working.
And as far as respect goes, I disagree that Lesnar will not show Mir more respect this fight than he did in the last fight. Will it be “Randy” respect? Maybe, maybe not, but disrespecting Mir last time caused Lesnar to get schooled in an embarrassingly short period of time, any “187″ or “Heath Herring” notwithstanding.
Finally if you’re going to ask MMA fans to buy into the fact that you’re “The Next Big Thing”, then you’d best be able to maintain your composure in the cage and not let yourself get caught in a BJJ/shoot-wrestling 101 kneebar.
Again.
JCOHL,
I didn’t say Brock was going to give mir NO respect, i said he’s not going to give mir the respect he gave RANDY therefor Brock will push the pace and be more aggresive with mir, which will probably result in a shorter fight and conditioning will not be such a huge factor in this fight BECAUSE it will end so quickly. Of course i’m assuming if brock pushes the pace it will end early.
My 187 comment was based on all the shiit mir has been talking and i honestly feel that, all his talking has had a reverse effect on brock and brock is not only pissed, but even more focused and determined to not only win, but kill frank mir.
I do agree that if Lesnar comes at Mir like a crazed spider monkey as he did last time, the fight will definitely end early, just maybe not the way Lesnar is hoping it will end.
I guess I’m just confused by the blatant lack of respect Frank Mir is shown. Is it because of Lesnar’s Wrestlemania fame? Are there that many WWE fans going to UFC events and visiting MMA websites?
Because I just haven’t seen this guy do anything to justify the hype surrounding him. He was brought into the UFC to sell t-shirts, event tickets, and bump PPV buys.
He beat Couture because he was bigger and younger, not better. He beat Herring by decision no less because Herring simply isn’t very good at what he does anymore. Just ask Jake O’Brien or BigNog.
Lesnar also beat some S Korean guy who has twice as many losses as wins and was beaten by Bob Sapp for $hits sake. This guy also makes a living fighting not other pro MMA fighters, but pro wrestlers. And sports a losing record. Thats not what I call a legitimate opponent, I’m sorry.
And when Lesnar fought someone with some talent, relative youth and size, like Frank Mir, he was submitted in 90 seconds after illegally hitting him in the back of the head.
To me that just doesn’t add up to the sort of fighter you want to pull for, let alone a champion. If you think he’s going to win tomorrow, thats fine, I agree with you, for the reasons I stated above. If you feel like mk4 does in that Lesnar is improving and will approach the Mir fight more professionally, again thats fine and I agree with you.
I’m not trying to single anyone out here, just trying to comprehend all of the “Lesnar-mania” running wild these days…
jchol,
dude, i can understand why you would feel like “brock-mania” is “running wild”,
simple, Lesnar has only 4 pro fights, he overpowered Couture and lost his first fight to Mir, but whether you like it or not, he’s training with decent MMA trainers and has improved, now some of us feel that he will show his improvements in this fight with Mir, that does not mean that we are WWE fans on MMA web sites. Any guy with an athletic backround like Lesnar can improve and learn MMA if he or she trains with legit MMA trainers like Lesnar does.
Now with that said, i agree that Lesnar has not done anything to be the favorite for this fight or justify all the hype, i personaly am a fan simply because he’s a huge guy with amazing athleticsm for his size….AND plain and simple i’m pulling for him because Mir has talked loads of $hit that he MUST back up because who the hell does he think HE is? He’s not Couture, he’s not Fedor, so what has he done that is so amazing. He has great JJ, his satnd-up is ok,not decent nor great like he thinks, and his chin is more guilty than suspect. If Lesnar wins he still will not get the cred he deserves, that’s just the way things work when you come from a plave like the WWE. BUT, if Lesnar does win and win convincingly, is he legit or not?
JCOHL,
I understand dude. Lesnar is no where near the skill-set level of many fighters and yet he is the champ. Can’t argue with lack of experience and obvious lack of skills.
We can go on forever on what happened, or should have happened in their first fight. Like how brock deserved a warning before stopping the fight. if he was given a warning, like he should have gotten, mir would have continued to get GnP’ded on and would have lost. That’s just the truth man. But like you said, his lack of skills and experienced proved to be his demise in that fight and mir being a veteran and world class jitz dude, completely took advantage and took brock’s knee as a souvenier.
The couture fight, well let’s face it, brock is younger, stornger and wayy bigger so imo randy didn’t have much to work with.
I can’t speak for everyone, but i’ll say that
1.) I’m not a WWE, or wrestling fan @ that (atleast that kind of wrestling.
2.) I am a big fan of brock, because the dudes exciting. Plain and simple. He’s not the most acccomplished or skilled mma fighter, but dammit he comes in to destroy. And watching a dude his size who can move like that is just kool dude. It’s like joe rogan said on the countdown “If this was hundreds of years ago brock would have had the biggest horse and the biggest sword while going into battle. This man was made for one thing, to wage war and battle”. That’s why i’m a fan.
Its all good, jazzkok, and apologies again if it sounded like I was dogging you or calling you out or anything like that. I read a lot of your stuff and I think for the most part its on-point and well-written, especially the unusual re-start in Mir-Lesnar 1.
Thanks for the clarification, not that you or anyone needs to explain who you like and why, but it really does help me understand, and its much appreciated…
What time does the live weigh in start for English Time?
I think the UK is 5 hours ahead of the east coast so it should be midnight (aka 8 minutes from now).
exactly right man
JCOHL,
Dude there’s no need for apologies. I didn’t think you were dogging me dude. I appreciate your passion and insight. Mir or lesnar, one things for sure, we’re in for one hell of night!
when did rogan get that ink on his left arm? i never noticed that
Been there a while. There was a huge internet buzz about it a few years back. He always wears long sleeves.
I drop 10 to 15 pounds in a week in a half before a grappling tournament… If I had a trainer, i’m sure I could do it better. He should be fine… and he’ll probably weigh 180 by fight time. I bounce back to 178ish by the next morning
i am suprised alves made weight, i thought he wouldnt, now he just has to bring his A++++++++ game tommorow night. that should be a war, and this is a question for the brock haters/doubters out there. if brock wins is it safe to see he is for real, or that he is just lucky and still doesnt deserve to be champ?
Also surprised Alves made weight, but if the man isn’t “up” for GSP and a title shot, he’s never going to be and is probably in the wrong line of work. As it stands he looks ready to go in a big way.
Should be an awesome fight.
As for the Lesnar issue, I posted on this on other threads but I’ll do it again here if I may, and say that yes, if Lesnar wins by anything other than Mir getting struck by lightning, it’s safe to say the guy is for real.
Even if Lesnar were to win by some sort of split decision, which is a highly unlikely outcome, he’ll have proved he can hang for 5 rounds with Mir, and did enough so that 2 of the 3 judges see him as the winner. Going 5 rounds with a guy like Mir and not getting submitted or KTFO’ed is a strong indication that you don’t suck out loud at MMA.
Although it was great to see Mir show up in the best shape of his career, I still think he’s got an awful big hurdle to clear, as Lesnar looked as Neanderthalic as ever, and I mean that in a good way.
Getting back to bigchris2328’s question, is Lesnar lucky?
Absolutely.
Does he “deserve” to be the champ?
Debateable, but the champ he’ll be nonetheless, and with wins over Couture and Mir, it’ll be hard to make a case against him.
Although I’ll start making the case against Lesnar on Monday if he wins because thats just how I roll
Enjoy the show one and all!
Man, mir is in sick shape! Mir by RD1 KO
