Takanori Gomi vs. Rafaello Oliveira Announced for Affliction: Trilogy
After a rumored bout with Brett Cooper fell through, Takanori Gomi has agreed to take on Rafaello Oliveira at Affliction: Trilogy on August 1 in Anaheim, California, the promotion today announced.
The former PRIDE lightweight champ Gomi (30-5) rebounded from back-to-back defeats and a pair of unimpressive wins with a second-round knockout of Takashi Nakakura at a May Shooto event. “The Fireball Kid” has not fought in the US since an early-2007 loss to Nick Diaz at PRIDE 33 in Las Vegas (the result was later changed to a No Contest after Diaz tested positive for marijuana).
Oliveira (8-1) has won three-straight, including a unanimous decision win in his most-recent bout in April, after suffering his only career loss to Lyle Beerbohm at an October ShoXC event.
Affliction: Trilogy is headlined by Fedor Emelianenko vs. Josh Barnett and also features Gegard Mousasi vs. Renato “Babalu” Sobral, Vitor Belfort vs. Jorge Santiago, and Paul Buentello vs. Gilbert Yvel.

hmmmmmm Gomi on US soil, He doesn’t fight well here, and he should win this fight but we shall see…………
* Side note, didn’t WAMMA state that if their champion does not defend their title within 6months they will be stripped of said title, as an excuse as to why Aoki was crowned the WAMMA LW champion (did he ever recieve his belt?) because BJ Penn was prepairing for the SUPERFIGHT against GSP? So by August 1st (Affliction:III) comes around it will have been 6 months and 8 days since their HW champion had fought, sooo is the the fight between Fedor and Barnett for the vacant WAMMA HW championship? F~WAMMA by the way, cheers
Nice point FR
why thank you TimCat, I just don’t like their BS personally but that is another conversation all in its self
Didnt they also say they were gonna be putting on 5 events a year.lmao
right carls
you heard that to? Atencio said that right before affliction 2. I just laughed, and I still am.
Ok, I dislike Affliction and WAMMA at least as much as you guys, but lets not turn this into the bash Affliction/WAMMA thread.
Hopefully Gomi can stay out of his own head and win this fight to redeem himself from losing to Diaz, at least in terms of fighting on US soil.
Sorry Justin we’ll get back on track here.(plenty of time to rag on Affliction in the future)
Dont know much about this Rafaello guy but he was doing ok until the doctor stopped the fight against Beerbohm. One thing to watch for Rafaello is one of Penn’s, BJJ parters and Gomi has been subbed a few times. I see a KO for Gomi nonetheless.
I think if Gomi can put together a couple of stateside quality wins, he might turn up on the UFC’s radar, and receive some consideration…
Hey all, been a while since i posted here but this thread really stuck out to me. First of all i’m excited to see Gomi fighting state side again. It’s hard to see international events here in Canada sans HDnet. I don’t know what all the affliction hate in here is all about. Sure they are going to flop, never will rival the UFC, and only put on 1 or 2 events a year. Look at the brightside though, they put on a hell of a card with a ton of international talent, not greed mongers like the UFC, and no big timmmeh this time. To be quite honest i like the fact that it’s only 1 or 2 events a year, it just adds to fedors mistique.
People don’t like them because they made their initial money (literally) on the backs of Dana White, UFC fighters, EliteXC fighters, and Strikeforce fighters, then started their own competing promotion. When they came onto the scene they immediately called out the UFC, they acted like they were going to put on more than two shows a year and haven’t done so, and they generally don’t have their corporate act together.
