Nick Diaz-Joe Riggs Rematch Probable for August 15 Strikeforce

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Jul 2, 2009 at 4:51 pm ET88 Comments

Nick DiazNick Diaz and Joe Riggs are likely to square off in a welterweight bout on the Showtime-televised main card at Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg on August 15 in San Jose.

Though not yet signed, the bout is reportedly in the works for the event and both fighters are expected to agree to the rematch of their early-2006 meeting at UFC 57 which was won by Riggs via unanimous decision.

Even more memorable than their fight inside the Octagon was the one that took place after they left the cage, as Diaz and Riggs brawled at the hospital.

Diaz (20-7) has won five-straight, including recent victories over Frank Shamrock and Scott Smith, while Riggs has won back-to-back fights over Luke Stewart and Phil Baroni.

  • timosykilla says:

no point on that, diaz is one of the best pound for pound in the world

    • fr702 says:

P4P in the world huh? Nick is a really good fighter don’t get me wrong he is super talented but since his last loss to KJ Noons he has beaten Katsuya Inoue, Mushin Corbbrey, Thomas Denny, Frank Shamrock (LiL Shammy Shamm) and Scott Smith….. Is that qualification to being one of the best P4P guys in the world?

      • dbiz says:

Why not? Before Affliction’s first card, Fedor had only beaten Hong Man Choi, Zuluzinho, Mark Hunt, Mark Coleman and a middleweight Matt Linland in the last three years and he was considered one of the p4p best….

      • timosykilla says:

yes. i think so, joe rogan thinks so, kj noons beat him by cut also that was at lightweight he said himself he wasnt nearly as good at LW

      • fr702 says:

        nice DbiZ ;-)

Timosykilla, the fight was at a 160lbs weight class (catchweight) that Gary Shaw made for Nick Diaz their fight was not at LW ;-)

      • Jaymz says:

And Lindland split Fedor open with the first swat, and was winning the fight until Fedor cheated and grabbed the ropes to get top position.

      • timosykilla says:

160 is only 5 pounds heavier than lightweight and also as i said he won by cut so thats kind of considred luck, also he’s improved so much since than.

      • Justin says:

Won by cut is still a win, and EliteXC is the only promotion to have lightweight at 160. Everyone else is 155 or less.

      • Figs says:

Not true, Pride had a weight class at 160 lbs aswell. This is the weight that Diaz had defeated Gomi.

      • Justin says:

I stand corrected on that, however, considering neither promotion still exists, I guess it doesn’t really matter.

  • timosykilla says:

it would be very entertaining though

  • Eye-Rhyme says:

I WANT TO SEE NICK BACK IN THE UFC!
WHAT IS PREVENTING HIM FROM RETURNING???

    • dbiz says:

The fact that he’d be a middle of the road welterweight?

      • Justin says:

And that pesky contract with Strikeforce….

If you want to be mad at anyone about Nick not being in the UFC be mad at Nick Diaz and Cesar Gracie. Nick is the one that walked away from the UFC to fight for Cesar’s promotion (that never actually materialized) and hasn’t tried to make his way back yet (to my knowledge)

  • bigchris2328 says:

his attitude and dana cant stand him. nick wont contend for a title in the ufc, let alone hang with the top 5 at mw, maybe he can at ww.

  • gunslinger says:

diaz’s striking is causing everyone problems and after he beats riggs because he will beat riggs…i dont think strikeforce can deny him a shot at cung le…..if cung wont fight diaz then cung should be stripped of the tile i have no interest in watching a guy who cares more about the fame than the fight being the champ in a major org

  • Eye-Rhyme says:

I DEF BELIEVE HE CAN CONTEND AT MW…
HE WOULD BE A TOP 5 MW..
THE ONLY FIGHTERS HE WOULD NOT DEFEAT AT MW
    WOULD BE ANDERSON SILVA…HENDO..W SILVA..
AND FRANKLIN IF U CONSIDER HIM A MW…
OTHER THAN THOSE FIGHTERS I CAN SEE HIM DEFEATING
    ANYONE ELSE..

AS FAR AS WW…HE WILL GET A TITLE SHOT…
I CAN NOT SEE HIM BEATING GSP…BUT I THINK HE
CAN MATCH UP WITH ANYONE ELSE IN THT DIVISION…

    HOPEFULLY HE COMES BACK!!

    • carls says:

I think Nate and Maia would both beat him.

      • Eye-Rhyme says:

        I DISAGREE…
DIAZ IS A TOP 5 MW IN THE UFC…
        I WOULD ARGUE TOP 4!!!
        HE WOULD DEFEAT BOTH

      • fr702 says:

Ok first he is not going to be a MW he wants to fight “close” to WW, he ofcourse wants HIS 162lbs division I also beleive that the winner of this bout will face KJ Noons next….

If Nick were to fight @ MW here are a few people that would beat him if not destroy him

        Anderson Silva
        Nate Marquardt
Jorge Santiago * Nick v Jorge would be entertaining as helll
        Dan Henderson
        Demian Maia
        Yushin Okami
        Akiyama
        Ronaldo Souza

      • fr702 says:

I was clearly stating MW’s in the world now here is who I think could beat Nick in the UFC MW division

        A.Silva
        Nate
        Hendo
        Maia
        Akiyamam
        Thales Leites
        Wilson Goviea
*Wanderlei Silva (when he drops down a weight class)
        Michael Bisping
        Patrick Cote

        just to name a few

Now I dont disagree that he is a helll of a fighter but seriously tops in the MW division he is not nor is he tops in the “P4P contest” either, just my opinon

      • timosykilla says:

carls what are you on about dude? he’s a welterweight

      • carls says:

Read all the posts dude and youl see what were bickering about. Diaz has been fighting at a bunch of weights.

      • timosykilla says:

whoa dude your right, but ide say he’d fight at welter in ufc

      • timosykilla says:

carls ye know what i feel like a royal sh*t cause i was corecting you when i didnt know what i was talking about

      • carls says:

Its cool man. I was rude about the whole Guillotine thing so you can say were even.

      • timosykilla says:

        thanks,cool

    • muaythai4life says:

I think Nate, Maia, Hendo, Bisping, A. Silva, Wand, Okami, and Cote would all beat him. Possible Jorge Santiago and Irvin also.

At WW you have GSP, Alves, Kos, Swick, Fitch, Marcus Davis, Karo, and Trigg who would put the hurtin on Diaz (Trigg may be far fetched, we’ll have to see).

Diaz’ striking is not all that fantastic. He has just fought really bad strikers (Scott Smith has ZERO head movement). Now that being said I see Nick beating Cung Le.

  • ckdiesel says:

I think that theres a misprint that confused me.. it says that smith defeated baroni whereas it was riggs…

diaz needs to come back as the contendership for both divisions seems to be dwindling (more so at WW)

maybe its because i personally think that both he and his kid brother are punks, Nate would serve him if he fought the same Nate who beat Gouvea.

  • micjasbro says:

would Riggs hands be healed by then, thought they were both broken.

    • fr702 says:

I don’t know that is interesting and well depends apawn “how broke” they are I guess I don’t know perhaps he is healed we shall see..

      • carls says:

Even at 100% i dont see Riggs as being any more of a threat to Diaz than his last two opponents have been. Granted hes younger than Frank and more well rounded than Smith, I just dont think he has anything to offer Diaz.

      • dbiz says:

It’s the Diaz way…fight guys who aren’t that good and proclaim yourself the greatest…

Wait, let me try that again…

“Yo, I put everyone they put in front of me down cuth they can’t handle my handth and my thpeed. THTOCKTON REPRETHENT! {inthert area code here} I’m here to take thith belt at a weight clathth they made up for me becauthe I’m the Betht!!! The GREATETHT! KJ Noonth didn’t want to fight me tho he ran off to bokthing!!!”

      • carls says:

That wath pretty funny dude nice stuff.

      • fr702 says:

It’s the 209 son, STOCKTON kid wat

  • OnlyTrue1 says:

Who won the fight in the Hospital??

    • Justin says:

I think Riggs won that, too. Wikipedia says “After the fight, the two were taken to the hospital for observation and post-fight tests. It was there that Diaz confronted Riggs and proceeded to punch him in the face, knocking Riggs to his knees. Riggs then tackled Diaz into a wall and started to knee him when the police arrived and quickly rushed in to separate the two.”

  • gunslinger says:

though i do believe nick is good he would never get a title shot i dont think at mdw at least…in the ufc mdw he would beat

    leites-he’s just better
wanderlai- his boxing would pick him apart
gouveia- will be injured for a while anyways after the sandman ko’s him
cote- pretty much the same fight as his scott smith fight except a little better

    but i do believe that-
    maia
    anderson
    marquardt
    hendo
    bisping
    akiyama
and cb dollaway all beat him

at welterweight diaz would smash alot of the top guys but lose to
    kampmann
    fitch
    gsp
    and alves

  • jcohl says:

I’ll admit to not being the world’s foremost authority on Nick Diaz, but if he were to return to the UFC at either WW or MW he’d barely break the top 10, let alone the top 4 or 5 as some have suggested. I can understand someone thinking that Diaz could beat Maia and/or Marquardt if you had a Nick Diaz poster on your wall or in your school locker, or belonged to his fan club, but I doubt you’d find too many MMA enthusiasts liking Diaz’s chances against someone of Maia’s or Marquardt’s talent level.
Smae goes for the WW’s. I can’t see someone putting cash on Diaz against Fitch or someone at that level, either.
And including him in a “best” p4p discussion requires one to REALLY stretch the meaning of the term…

Between Diaz’s bad blood/bad attitude beef with Dana White, the fact that he’d be physically overmatched in the top ranks of the UFC MW division, and most likely be outclassed in terms of pure talent in the top ranks of the UFC WW division, it seems his best course of action is to ply his trade elsewhere. The only reason I can think of that would cause Dana White to re-sign Diaz is to sit front row and watch one if his guys throw Diaz a severe beating.

Also, Joe Riggs strikes me as one of those fighters who failed to evolve along with and/or as quickly as the sport. I’m sure he’ll lose to Diaz, but I’m not sure tha the MMA world is supposed to be impressed with Diaz beating guys past their prime in age or off the mark in talent.

And even though we’re asked to avoid fighter-bashing, it’s hard to support people who run their mouths as much as the Diaz brothers do in interviews, with so little cause. A pro MMA fighter is SUPPOSED to beat someone he’s better than, and be at least marginally respectful and somewhat understated about it. If you beat someone like Jon Fitch or Nate Marquardt, then you’ve earned the right to make a little noise.
Otherwise when you get a “W” against a less talented or past their prime opponent, like Frank Shamrock, you thank your trainers and coaches, show at least minimal respect for the man you just beat, collect your check and get the hell out of the cage.
What you shouldn’t EVER do is try to cut some sort of half-assed pro wrestling promo while rocking a dopey speech impediment to convince the MMA world that you’ve just accomplished something amazing…

    • OnlyTrue1 says:

      Jcohl

That was Hilarious and on point!!

      • jcohl says:

        Thanks, OnlyTrue1
And apologies to the forum management for the overt fighter-bashing. I really do try not to kick dirt on the shoes of pro MMA fighters, but I sometimes fall short. I’ll work on it moving forward.

      • Justin says:

I don’t like Nick Diaz either, and that’s not really fighter bashing, dbiz has come the closest to it on this thread, but the guy does have a lisp so… what can you do? ;)

Fighter bashing would be name calling like, “Diaz is a f@g!!1″ making wild claims that can’t really be backed up, or just going on some rant of personal attacks that also can’t really be backed up.

      • Justin says:

Also, Diaz doesn’t care about the sport of MMA, he just wants to win fights, and has said so in interviews.

    • Jaymz says:

      jcohl

when the fight with Shamrock was stopped Diaz actually said to him ‘you’re a legend, get up’ and then helped him up.

also, are you saying that Eye-Rhyme has a Nick Diaz poster?

      • fr702 says:

        jcohl,

“What you shouldn’t EVER do is try to cut some sort of half-assed pro wrestling promo while rocking a dopey speech impediment to convince the MMA world that you’ve just accomplished something amazing…”

is this the fighter bashing you are speaking of? Cuz if soo no worries man I’m not upset nor would anyone else (i assume)… but a word of advice if you’re going to mock Nick Diaz come with your A game cuz DbiZ has got things covered when it comes to making Nick look foolish, wait scratch that Nick Diaz does it himself cheers man hey why aren’t you a member?

      • fr702 says:

        nice catch Jaymz

      • jcohl says:

fr702…what am I supposed to be a member of exactly?
Apologies if I’ve inadvertently done something wrong here at the forum.

      • Justin says:

        jcohl,
He’s talking about the website. If you look at the very top of each page is a bar that says “buddy press login signup” click signup.

      • jcohl says:

Justin, everyone, thanks for the clue-in. I successfully completed the signup process.

  • Dietrich says:

I’d rather see Strikeforce play the hospital security video (joke)…This has the makings of an incredible fight with all the bad blood between the two of them. I am a Diaz fan but I don’t think he can do much in today’s WW division. My fanboy test for him would be a fight with Carlos Condit.

    • jcohl says:

Great call on a proposed Condit-Diaz match-up, Dietrich.
Although it seems that the UFC is not the right place for Nick Diaz, maybe the WEC would be?

Also, a question for the collective if I may:

How would Nick Diaz fare in a bout with Carlos Condit?

      • fr702 says:

Nick is doing just great in StrikeForce and well he then has options to fight in Japan as well while being contracted with StrikeForce… He has zero fit in the WEC imo, StrikeForce is a good fit… He can fight Catchweight and whomever he wants and collect W’s all day long…

      • Dr.doom says:

Diaz beats condit ….. he’s too good with his hands and holds an advantage on the ground . I like condit and he fights hard but nick is better prepared at this point .

      • Justin says:

Since everyone is always so keen on making the guys of AKA fight each other, I’d like to see Diaz vs. Shields because either way someone I don’t like gets a loss. Preferably a five round title fight where they beat the crap out of one another the full 25 minutes. Have Diaz win, and then have it get overturned because Diaz failed his drug test again.

      • Justin says:

Eesh… sorry that was harsh, sorry.

      • timosykilla says:

haha that was a low blow justin

  • southcakalak says:

less than a month ago Dana siad he had an open door for nick diaz…i wouldnt be suprised if he was back in the ufc by this time next year…he’s still really young, and only getting better, and dana knows people will watch him fight…i personally love watching him fight, and for the other side of the coin, the other half watch him to see if he’ll get his face crushed…

ps…he hasnt been finished since 2002!!(not counting cuts by KJ)and he avenged the stoppage by jeremy jackson twice.

  • southcakalak says:

    pps…and he gogo’d gomi

  • southcakalak says:

    lol…yea made him extra flexible

    • timosykilla says:

surely you’s don’t actually beleive that the marajuana enhanced his performance

      • Justin says:

We’ve been over the “performance enhancing” thing before, the contention of the AC was that the pain numbing affects helped Diaz get through the beating he took. I would agree with that statement. I would also argue that the calming affects of marijuana would help a fighter to keep a cool head while taking a beating. The Diaz’s are good at that anyways, but I have to think that being high would make that even better.

      • Jaymz says:

Ha Ha Ha,That’s funny chit.I’m pretty sure carls was being sarcastic.I don’t think Justin was.

  • Dietrich says:

IMO I think right now Diaz beats Condit. Carlos hurt himself switching camps so he not quite as there as when he was with FIT. Nicks striking is there and he is a little stronger than he was in the past.

  • nightmare says:

    diaz will kill riggs

  • timosykilla says:

diaz beat shamrock even easier than cung le beat him. anyone know when cung le is fighting next?

    • Justin says:

I don’t even think Cung Le knows when he is fighting next. There should have been an interim MW champ in Strikeforce a long time ago. Hopefully he will come back and fight soon, but there’s no telling if that will happen or not.

  • bigchris2328 says:

cung le is next fighting in whatever gay ass movie he is making. props to dbiz for possibly the funniest post i have ever read on here. my eyes teared up. i would like to see maia-nick just to see maia shove nick’s blackbelt up his poop chute, maia would destroy him on the ground, as far as striking let nate marquardt handle nick, or in ww let swick or alves pick him apart. nick is concerned with fighting his catchweight bouts against lesser skilled guys and then making it seem like he is the best when he wins. cung le might kick his head off if they ever fight, but that wont happen anytime soon.

  • jcohl says:

Is it possible that Cung Le, having accomplished his goals in both san shou and MMA, is in effect retired from the sport?
I realize that on the surface this might sound offbeat, but from everything I’ve read and heard the man simply has no sense of urgency to get back into the ring, or cage, as the case may be, and defend his title.
I understand that the tone is more relaxed over at Strikeforce than it is within the UFC, but I can’t believe that they’re happy about this guy just taking their belt and going home, or off to Hollywood to do some straight-to-DVD movie.

The way a champion handles himself outside of the cage sometimes tells you more about him than the way he handles himself inside of it…

    • carls says:

I think Cung Le feels content with where he is right now and your right is in no rush to get back in the cage. Hes the champ, fairly popular, undefeated, and is now doing movies. Plus he goes to UFC shows and DAna kisses his ass. Hes thinking why do I need to fight Im just gonna ride out this little hot streak im on until it runs cold.IMO

  • jcohl says:

On the subject of Cung Le, and I realize that this is a bit off-topic, but a question for the collective:

How would Cung Le fair in the UFC if he were to jump after fulfilling his Strikeforce obligation?
His striking his beyond reproach, but his takedown defense and submission games are big question marks, to put it politely.
    Anyt thoughts?

    • Jaymz says:

I think you said it,he has amazing stand up but no ground game. He’d likely do alright against the Chris Leben types, the guys who like to stand and trade, but he’d probably be in trouble against someone with a good ground game.

    • Justin says:

I don’t think he could make it to the top of the division, especially with the part time approach he takes to fighting.

      • carls says:

I think he would have a tough time cracking the top ten. Id see him losing to; miller, maia, gouveia, okami, sonnen, wandy, marquardt, leites, hendo, bisping, franklin, cote.
I guess that all he would need to do is beat one of those guys and hed be knocking on the door or in. He hasnt truly been tested and i dont think his chin is that great either.

  • Vinz_Clortho says:

OMFG ROFFLECOST I can’t believe you think Bisping would beat Diaz tres funny..
