Now this is a good card and there will be some great fights, Torres v Bowles com’on thats going to be good

  • silencekit says:

Wow. Leonard Garcia lost to Mike Brown in a title fight and now he’s relegated to the non-televised undercard. That was quick. I was hoping to see his fight. I guess if one or two of the main card fights end quickly…

    • Justin says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if the way in which he lost has something to do with him ending up on the under card.

      • silencekit says:

So what. He lost to the champ by KO. Pulver lost by KO to Garcia and was still on the main card in his next fight. Whatever.

      • chrisl says:

Silencekit- you said it yourself… Jens Pulver… former UFC champion… a name.

Leonard is better known to non hardcore MMA people for being the MMA fighter accused for helping a drug ring(he didn’t report them was his only “crime”). Once you win a title you get a lil more respect most of the time.

      • Justin says:

Actually, Garcia lost via arm triangle. He also wouldn’t be the first, nor will he be that last, title challenger to end up on the prelims his next fight out. (John Fitch, Thales Leites, just to name a couple more.)

    Question for the collective.
Where does Migues Torres fall into those hypothetical “best pound for pound fighter” rankings?
The man’s made an excellent case for himself in the cage, and never really seems to be in severe danger of losing his title.
Also, I have to agree that Garcia’s rapid fall from grace is a little surprising. Losing to the champ shouldn’t IMO knock you all the way down to the prelims. Maybe there is something behind the scenes that the fanbase is unaware of??
Overall looks like a good night of fights…

    • Jazzkok says:

I honestly never saw garcia as a “top” 145er anyways. He’s a tough guy but overrated dude. The fight vs pulver…talk about early stoppage. And we saw what the current champt did to him. Maybe it’s good for him to get more fights in before he gets back to the top.

I too have a question for the collective.

What makes a fighter, the p4p best in the world? Why would a fighter be considered the best p4p fighter in the world?

      • Jazzkok says:

Doesn’t p4p stand for “pound for pound”? Meaning that the fighter would have to be dominant in not only his weight class, but a couple of others as well?

      • Justin says:

I always took the meaning of a “best pound for pound” to be more of what Chris indicated, simply a “best fighters from any weight class” list. It’s like when you have a guy that is physically strong (as far as lifting weights). If you have a 200 lbs guy that can bench 300 lbs, or a 130 lbs guy that can bench 230 lbs. Literally the 200lbs guy is stronger because he can in fact lift more weight, but the 130 lbs guy is “pound for pound” the stronger guy. Basically, if the smaller guy were the same size as the bigger guy, and was able to bench at the same ratio to his body size, that would be well over 300 lbs.

I look at fighters the same way when considering p4p. If X fighter fought X fighter at equal size, who would win? So in essence, p4p becomes a “who’s the best fighter at any weight class” discussion. When a fighter like A. Silva steps up to face larger opponents and wins, that helps his standing at a p4p because he is actually facing off against some of the competition at another weight class. If he were to hold a title at both 205 and 185 (not saying that would happen) that would make a very strong case for him as best p4p. Just like if Fedor were to sign with the UFC clean out the HW division there, then cut down to 205 (which I honestly think he could do, if he wanted) and clean out that division, it would make a very strong case for him being P4P best.

      • chrisl says:

Pound for pound just means that a fighter is the best fighter regardless of weight. Meaning that if you shrunk a guy or grew a guy he’d beat whoever he faced. It doesn’t mean you have to actually fight at different weight classes.

      • Justin says:

I didn’t mean to imply in my comment that it was necessary to fight at different weight classes to qualify for a top p4p ranking.

      • chrisl says:

didn’t think you did Justin I didn’t see your comment until after I posted since I went to post at the same time and got distracted before I hit submit haha

      • Justin says:

haha, no worries, I just wanted to make that clarification for anyone that may come after as well, since it wasn’t in the original comment.

      • Jazzkok says:

        Justin and CHris L,

yeah i totally get what you guys are saying. I think i don’t like the term “p4p” because it should be “the best fighter in the world”. I’m taking that term literally and imo “pound for pound” best fighter in the world is a dude who like i said, dominates his weight class, goes up or down, and dominates that weight class as well. Cutting weight, gaining weight, hence, p4p.

The title i use is simple. “the best fighter in the world”. IMO this guy would be the most dominant, exciting, well rounded and talented”.

Thanks though, i hear that a lot and really wonder what people are saying.

Torres is my boy and imo he’s definately on this “p4p” best list.

      • carls says:

The term P4P dates back to the 50’s man when “sugar” ray robinson was killing guys. Its been used ever since and has realy come in to affect with MMA lately. Just to answer your question on why its called p4p jazz.

It seems like this topic has been discussed heavily already but I thought id give you some examples that always have me drooling. Imagine if Randy was 6′5 and 250-260 the fight he would of had with lesnar. Or if GSP was 6′2 with his same frame, boy what he could do to some LHW.

    • chrisl says:

FR and I typically have this discussion every time he’s tried to come up a w/ a P4P list. I personally think it’s pointless to try and rank P4P from 1-10 since the guys can’t really fight w/o giving up some sort of advantage, I prefer just listing the top ten fighters really. That said, Torres is easily on that list of guys.

      • fr702 says:

P4P, put them in whatever order you wish, but it is rather clear imo

In this specific alphabetical (by first name) order

Anderson Silva, Fedor, GSP, Lyoto Machida, Miguel Torres, put them where you want in terms of 1,2,3 etc

and ya Chrisl we have had discussions about this P4P thingy

  • Dietrich says:

Torres…Garcia…Yahya…Paxaio so many of these guys are capable of an amazing fight. I think this is the first big card for the new “Rogue Joint” anybody know when and where weigh ins will be?

    • Kris Karkoski says:

Haven’t heard anything on the WEC 42 weigh-ins yet. Obviously they’ll be on the 8th and I’d suspect they’ll be at the Joint or somewhere else at the Hard Rock but nothing’s official yet.

  • Dietrich says:

    @ Kris,
    Thanks(2x).
House is going back up soon and We are finally getting back out there to check out the school. I figured Saturday too and since its the travel day I am kind of nervous as to how/where it will time out. No Doubt is listed for the 7th so maybe it will be inside the New Joint.

  • Double Cross VF says:

Very excited about this line up to see the wins of Miguel Torres, Lenord Garcia, Danny Castillo, Markis Hicks, and Joseph Benavidez take place LIVE… all of these guy bring true fight to the game!!!!

  • Hawk says:

I will be in Vegas when this fight is going on. Never been to a fight live. Anyone know where I should try to get tickets (what section) to have a decent seat?
