I can definitely understand taking a closer look at where your money is going, and if necessary re-evaluating how much you spend in any given area of your budget. I've had to do the same thing at times myself, and I've had to choose not to spend money on things I would like to spend money on. That said, I usually have people over to help offset the cost of the PPVs and cut back in other areas in order to be able to purchase them, if necessary. I can understand you wanting your money to be spent better when you give it to a company, but at the same time if you look at all the places you spend money, I'm sure you can find other places that spend it in less favorable ways. (For example, if you buy Nike shoes.) Anyways, whether you choose to watch the fight or not, hope you enjoy it.

Justin, dbiz, chrisl, really good points, for sure.

This might be a bit off topic, but perhaps as an explanation as to why I see things a little differently is in order. About 6 months back, I like the rest of the country began taking a closer look at where my momey was going. After looking thru a lot of old AmEx statements and banks/ATM records over the last 6 years, it turns out that I've legitimately spent in excess of $10,000.00 on my MMA habit.
This "habit", more like a passion really, occupies a lot of my spare time and spare cash. I consider it money well-spent supporting a sport I love and the promotion, for good or ill. The cold hard cash figure of 10 grand really made me start thinking about what exactly the UFC is offering for the money, and how they are spending the money I give them. I really like dbiz's suggestion of a 10K minimum. If the UFCand other MMA promotions instituted such a policy, I would gladly accept increased PPV and event costs if I knew the money was definitely going to the men making the sport great, and not a handful of suit-wearing investors who've never stepped inside the cage and who don't know the difference between an armbar and a candy bar.

Which is what I like about numbers. MY numbers tell me how much I've spent, and JUSTIN'S numbers tell me how much the UFC has given in return. You're right that its my perrogative whther or not to "buy in" to a specific PPV. The truth is I let my love for the sport color my judgement, and basically buy whatever MMA offerings PPV has on tap, and pretty much every UFC PPV in the last 5 years except for the ones I attended.

I think going forward I should maybe try seeing things thru clearer eyes, and take your numbers into account when I comment on the financial side of the UFC...

jcohl,
I agree with dbiz that a 25% across the board cut will hurt fighters. I also agree that a 10k minimum wouldn't be bad. In regards to the 25% increase, I wrote an editorial in February that brought to light the fact that Zuffa, LLC. put on seven events in eight weeks totaling seventy-two fights, and one hundred forty-four fighters. (This stretch included two WEC events, I believe.) If all of those fighters only made 10k per fight, if they were to receive a 25% increase that would total $360,000, which is more than the total disclosed payouts for Ultimate Fight Night: Lauzon vs. Stevens($304,000). However, GSP v. BJ Penn was one of the fights included in that string. The GSP v. BJ Penn fight in and of itself had a total disclosed payout of $525,000. The total event had a disclosed payout of $1,057,000, a 25% increase of which would be $264,250, only $40,00 short of the total disclosed payout for UFN: Lauzon vs. Stevens, which took place a week later.

As far as 103 being a "free-per-view" you do realize that the Wednesday before it is a UFN 19 and the kick-off of TUF 10? If you don't want to pay for it, that's your prerogative, but the more people that make a similar decision, or decide to stream the fights online rather than pay for them, the longer it takes for fighter pay to increase. If you don't want to pay for it, well that's your decision, but when you decide you don't want to pay for it and then make accusatory statements about why the UFC would want you to pay that's when I have a problem. I personally think the bout will be worth my money, and since I probably won't get to buy UFC 101, that six week stretch won't hurt me so bad as it might hurt others.

It could possibly be free but here is a bit of food for thought,

UFC 85 "Bedlam" was held on June 7, 2008... So from UFC 85 to UFC 100 (being held on July 11th '09) there have been 24 UFC events and to my knowledge 10 have "been free" so do the math I'm not quite sure what we are all complaining about, in 13 months + 4 days we all have recieved 10 "free events" from the largest Org in the world...

Furthermore, I'm not sure about where you all are at or your cable/sat provider issues but don't most of us get to enjoy UFC UnLeashed, TUF (when on), UFC wired, The KnockOuts series, plus the countdowns.. See there is plenty to see, helll the other night I rewatched Swick v Burkman on spike, see even tho TUF isn't on there is pleanty of "free" UFC out there...

Just my thoughts on the "free" aspect of things

A 25%, across the board increase in fighter pay WILL hurt the UFC, and badly. There is no business anywhere i nthe world, that can increase salary expenses 25% without all but killing the company.

Sure more pay would be nice, but not at the expense of sending the sport back underground and out of sight. Furthermore, You would be hurting a majority of MMA fighters. The higher-end guys get a % of PPV sales and gate. In his prime, Liddell was getting 2 million per PPV. I laid it all out before, with numbers given by some headliners (don't have the bookmark at work).

I've also been in favor of a 10k minimum, and very vocally so. But a 25% across the board raise for fighters ends the UFC.

We could still see hughes on this card or the next the guy has made it obvious that he wants to keep fighting. I personally think he should retire, but if he must fight I say he give him someone like Condit. That would be a huge test for Matt and if he gets a whuppin he will know that its time to hang em up.
