After Benson Henderson got caught in a submission and lost the UFC lightweight title, he put on a proud face and moved along.
Henderson defeated Josh Thomson and Rustam Khabilov, positioning himself as a title contender. But, with the belt locked up between champion Anthony Pettis and Gilbert Melendez, “Smooth” decided to stay active.
Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 49, Henderson suffered the first stoppage loss of his career via strikes, as Rafael dos Anjos immediately became a top contender himself.
The Brazilian dropped Henderson with a left and forced him back to the drawing board once again.
“I’ll have to go back and take a look,” said Henderson, who protested the finish. “I thought I was clear-headed. It is what it is.
Henderson put on a smile through his patented toothpick, but you could still see the anger on his face about the stoppage.
“You have to take the ups with the downs, the good with the bad. That’s the way it goes sometimes.”
