Andrei Arlovski Now a Free Agent After Affliction Contract Expires

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Jun 23, 2009 at 12:58 pm ET23 Comments

Andrei ArlovskiVeteran heavyweight Andrei Arlovski is now a free agent after Affliction opted not to re-sign “The Pitbull”, whose contract recently expired following back-to-back losses.

Arloski competed exclusively for the UFC from 2000 through 2008, including a reign as the promotion’s heavyweight champion, but was allowed to become a free agent in early-2008 despite a three-fight win streak and promptly signed with Affliction. After victories over Ben Rothwell and Roy Nelson pushed his win streak to five-straight, Arlovski suffered first-round knockouts to top-ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko and undefeated prospect Brett Rogers.

Affliction vice president Tom Atencio confirmed the news on Tuesday with Fighters Only, and also that the company will keep Tim Sylvia under contract for now despite back-to-back losses of his own and that Affliction has no plans for Fedor’s  brother Aleksander Emelianenko to fight for them in the future.

keep tim, and cut andre… hmmm…. i wonder why everyone thinks they will go under?WTF???????????

  • I honestly don’t feel that Arlovski is done, he’s still a good fighter. I think he took Rogers lightly and didn’t train hard for that fight, and against Fedor, he just plain and simple made a dumb move AND he has a very weak chin. Other than that, he still has skill and talent, he just needs to work on his defense more and keeping his hangs up when he punches.

Its realy funny the way MMA works one minute your on top of the world the next your a bum who should hang em up. Imagine if Arlovski had knocked out Fedor wich looked like he was on his way to doing, hell hed be considerd one of the best in the world. Im with you marvel hes a great fighter who happens to have a suspect chin and has got cought a few times.

    Wow.
Where does AA go from here?
Try to get back into the UFC? Good luck with that.
Ply his trade overseas in Japan, fighting 7 footers, ex-footballers, and monstrous pro wrestlers in sideshow bouts? Maybe you can room with CroCop if you go that route.
No one could fault AA for losing to Fedor, because everyone else does, but I guess this loss to relative unknown Brett Rogers was just too much for the Afflict-ed to overlook. Go figure. At least AA lost to an up and coming MMA fighter, and not some has-been boxer pushing 50 like Sylvia did.
Probably the biggest slap in AA’s face was the fact that the promotion opted to keep Tim Sylvia and release him. Maybe Affliction should have had them both fight, and the winner gets a contract, while the loser gets a well-deserved boot in the ass?

I wish AA luck. He’s going to need it.

      Or more likely, with Fedor.

      • jcohl says:

So dbiz, you think it unlikely that Fedor will ever fight in the UFC, and finish his days in Japan?
        Just wondering…

      • chrisl says:

JCohl- hate to say it but I believe dbiz is right on here. Fedor will likely end up finishing up in Japan. The fact that his management wants a one fight deal, and almost definitely after seeing what Cro Cop did, will keep him out of the UFC barring he changes management.

    • Jazzkok says:

      Well said JCOHL

I’ve never liked affliction and seriously believe this will be their last show. Vitor’s leaving, sylvia got ktfo by roger’s granfather and i don’t see fedor sticking around much longer.

Good luck to arlovski cuz the dude’s going to need it.

    • bottumzup says:

      Throw him on TUF 10….LOL

  • The UFC should have “The Ultimate Fighter-The Comeback 2″ and have Andre Arlovski as one of the guys on that show.

    • jcohl says:

Good idea, mk4, but I wonder if there would be enough viable contestants in AA’s weight class?
I really don’t need to see a show with Rico Rodriguez and Tim Sylvia trying to TUF their way back into the UFC, but opinions may vary…

  • fr702 says:

AA was a good fighter for the era he was fighting in, he started believing his own hype only worked on his boxing and head movement foot work etc (kinda ironic actually, working on his head movement), he wants to be a boxer, he has pretty much only trained boxing as of late… All everyone heard about is Freddy this and Roach is in his corner watch out know… He wasn’t doin Sambo anymore or anything..

He has been Ko’d twice and well shhhhhhhhh happens he is a talented fighter no doubting that but I just think that he wants to move on to a boxing career instead of a MMA career..

He could always sign with StrikeForce or he could fight Bob Sapp in Japan, but honestly I believe that he will box

They (Affliction) are still bound to Timmmehhh contractually, he hasn’t completed all of his contracted fights for Affliction, soo honestly Atencio can’t come out and say well I’m cutting his asss after he fights for me one more time… That’s why they “kept” him

  • Dr.doom says:

I’d like to see him do some K-1 …… then he can concentrate on the footwoork /hands all he wants ……. him and Jerome LeBanner would be cool

  • CT says:

ya he is gonna need some luck.. i would like to see AA back in the UFC.. i enjoy watchin him fight… but its highly unlikly.. prolly will end up boxing like yall say..

  • vasya says:

AA flew to high in his mind and now he is folding down.
I wish him good luck by claiming back ,
but I don’t really see it happens.
    Neither in Boxing or MMA
Here is some stats for people who fought Fedor and what are the results after the fight.

    Fedor’soponents —Record before F.-Record against and after F.—Diff %
    1. Andrei Arlovski ——–15-5————-0-2——————-(-75%)
    2. Tim Sylvia ————-24-4————-0-2——————-(-86%)
    3. Hong-Man Choi ———–1-0————-1-2——————-(-66%)
    4. Matt Lindland ———-20-4————-1-2——————-(-50%)
    5. Mark Hunt —————5-2————-0-4——————-(-71%)
    6. Mark Coleman ———–13-5————-2-4——————-(-39%)
    7. Zuluzinho —————3-0————-2-6——————-(-75%)
    8. Mirko Filipovi? ——–16-3————-9-3——————–(-9%)
    9. Tsuyoshi Kohsaka ——-24-15————2-3——————-(-22%)
    10. Nogueira ————–19-1————-12-4——————(-20%)

  • WEC says:

I would hazzard a guess at Tim Sylvia not being released despite his loss to Mercer is because he still has a contract with Affliction which they would have to pay up on if they released him where as Arlovski’s contract had expired which didn’t cost them anything to let him go

  • So wats gonna happen to fedors little big brother Alecsander? I enjoyed watchinh his fights in pride. I’d like to see him back in the cage or ring. Kinda ironic fedor is fighting the man who arm triangled lil emelianenko in the 1st rd.
