Dana White: UFC 99 Will Be on TV in UK

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Jun 11, 2009 at 9:51 am ET43 Comments

UFC President Dana WhiteWith Ireland-based broadcaster Setanta Sports, the UFC’s television partner in the UK, reportedly on the verge of collapse due to financial issues, concerns have been raised over whether UFC 99, taking place this Saturday in Cologne, Germany, will air in the country, which has six fighters featured on the card.

According to UFC President Dana White, UFC 99 “will be on TV” in the UK, with the promotion apparently working out a last minute deal that could see the card broadcast on Bravo should Setanta not make in through Saturday.

Hang tight we will be on tv. Either setanta or bravo. We are working on it,” wrote White on Twitter.

  • Us And Chuck says:

I’m surprised people in the UK are so worried over this it reminds me of ITV Digital some years back in the UK who were in bigger trouble yet they continued to broadcast for months even after being placed in to administration.

My guess it is as good as on Setanta this weekend but the previous carrier of The UFC Bravo have been contacted in the event of a highly unlikely chance Setanta is removed from UK TV screens.

And with ESPN highly likely picking up Setanta mainly for the Premiership coverage (English Soccer…i hate that word :( ) i don’t see the UK not missing any Major Events

    • Justin says:

If ESPN does pick up Setanta, that could pose some problems for their arrangement with the UFC. Maybe not, but it seems a conflict for them to have UFC when ESPN has the contract with Bellator.

      • Us And Chuck says:

Could have an effect Justin but i imagine it is different for other counties in other markets and isn’t Bellator considered a Series/Season of programming so maybe it is non conflicting ?

As i said ESPN are desperate for Premier League coverage in Europe as it is a big deal financially and they already have a relationship with them ESPN America is a part of the Sentanta package from sources i know of in the Media The ESPN deal is highly possible and will be very interesting how Rupert Murdoch’s clan respond to this.

  • jpmm says:

Reports over here say that staff at Setanta have been told their jobs are safe until at least the end of the week. Whilst that’s cold comfort for them at least it suggests to me at least that with UFC99 taking place before the end of the week live screening should take place on Setanta.

Bravo’s coverage used to be ok in the pre-Setanta days but it was always shown on a 24 hour delay with endless adverts spanning the 3 hour showing, not ideal.

  • jpmm says:

Especially when I could never wait until the following evening to come round and always checked the result on mmafrenzy.com beforehand.

  • Chy says:

So we should be able to see UFC 99 at 3pm est on this Sat? Can someone confirm me plz….

  • ryanmoney says:

Im pleased we will get to see it here in the UK whatever happens with Setanta. I wonder what we should do about our Setanta subscriptions though. Might not be wise to keep a direct debit open to a failing company.

    • fr702 says:

      Bisping is a lady RyanMoney

      • ryanmoney says:

You’ve only just noticed, FR? lol

      • fr702 says:

a lady I tells ya, and no I’ve noticed this along time ago, never the less I just wanted to inform you that I haven’t forgotten that Bisping is a lady and just randomly throw it out there.. How is it going on the other side of the pond? Are u excited that the 55ers finale are two Brits?

      • ryanmoney says:

haha, yea never forget that Bisping is a lady! I’m not in the UK at the moment. I’m stuck Charlotte, NC waiting for a plane back to good old Blighty but I’m cool thanks! Hows things with you??

Yea I’m pleased with the 55er final. Should be a cool fight. I’m not confident for the next final though, but I suppose you Americans deserve to own the next! :)

        Laterz mate

      • Justin says:

Charlotte, eh? That’s only a couple hours down the road from me. Were you there on business, or is that a layover location between flights?

      • ryanmoney says:

Oh cool, are you in NC too, or somewhere near?

Yea I was there because of a layover. Ive spent the past month in Orlando but Charlotte always seems to be the host of my transfer flight. I was stuck at Douglas for hours yesterday.

My girlfriends parents live in High Point so I spend a bit of time there sometimes. That near you?

      • Justin says:

Yeah, I’m near Raleigh, so a couple hours from High Point.

  • ryanmoney says:

I would much rather have it on a PPV basis. £12.50 a month was a rip off. The only good thing Setanta had was UFC… and David Haye lol

  • Jdubb says:

am I the only one that thinks this CARD should be free… WTF.. its going to be TAPE DELAYED or get it early…

    • Justin says:

This is not the first time they’ve done this.

    • fr702 says:

I do realize that most people are use to the idea of Eupropean cards being on Spike for free… I get that but look at the card that is being offered plus the week after there will be a free card on Spike anyways (a pretty good one to boot)… Also UFC 99 is giving a minimum of 6 fights and with names like Wanderlei, Franklin, CC, Kongo etc that is a good deal the only two decisions most would have to make is to buy it and if they do what time to watch it at… With the TUF 9 finale being on June 20th free on Spike this is well worth the investment imo to see so awesome fights….

      • Justin says:

Yeah, no complaints here. Lots of good fights, and I can buy it and record it at 3pm, then watch it at 9pm when everyone comes over and everyone can go home before midnight (fast-forward through Rogan and Goldie’s blah blah, and the commercial for whatever movie is sponsoring something/whatever), then get online and check out bjpenn.com to see if they are streaming Beatdown 10.

    • Jdubb.

I think that every card without a title fight should be the free monthly card, but i honestly don’t mind paying the $44 plus dollars to watch the events, especially cuz i like supporting the UFC by buying every PPV.

      • Justin says:

If every card without a title fight was free, there would have been a lot more free cards this year. Free cards take money out of fighters’ pockets, though, in addition to taking it from the UFC bank account. Free card = no PPV = no PPV percentage bonus.

  • Eye-Rhyme says:

sooo ufc 99 won’t be airing on spike here in the states????

    • fr702 says:

Nope it is through your local PPV provider…… TUF 9 Finale is the free card this month….

      • Eye-Rhyme says:

REALLY. CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG…BUT THE UFC PUTS A FREE CARD EVERY MONTH???

      • fr702 says:

No they don’t but with UFC 99 being held in Germany, most people thought that it would be free on Spike for most European cards are free on Spike… So to conter that TUF 9 Finale is being held free on Spike “this month”, sorry if I added some confusion to the situation…

      • Eye-Rhyme says:

        OOOH OK I SEE…
        NO WORRIES.
        THANKS

  • JOHNBOY says:

glad to here it im looking forward to this card its gunna be sick, theres guna be some big knockouts this sat im pumped

    • fr702 says:

JohnBoy, nice to see you back in town….. Why is Bisping a lady?? Now just picking on ya but hey this card is seriously going to be good and quite frankly it hasn’t gotten the push that most cards get due to UFC 100 coming up next month…. But look who is on the card, it is rather stacked and should have some crazy moments in it, plus 6 fights minimum now that is nice, cheers JohnBoy

      • JOHNBOY says:

must admit bisping has come off a bit off a dick on tuf but i think hes only trying to wind hendo an the americans up and it seems to be working, ive always been around mate just haven’t been commenting as much seen as wen im writeing u lot are asleep so got no one to argue with lol. yeah this card is guna be good looking 4ward to swick killer b that will be explosive.

  • I’m really looking forward to this card, the return of Mirko Cro-cop, Kong fighting Velasques and Wanderlei puttin a hurt’n on Franklin, and Killa B making his entrance to the main card, this is sure gonna be a sick night of fights. Now with that said:

I don’t like the fact that Rich Franklin has been making excuses for losing to Dan Henderson. He feels that the poke in eye he suffered !!!15 seconds left!!! cost him the fight. Come on, anyone who saw that fight knows that Henderson clearly won, Franklin was NOT going to score a last second knockout like he implied in “****down To UFC 99″ special. Franklin, you lost deal with it and stop taking subtle shots at Henderson for being a wrestler and controling you the whole fight”it’s nice to know that i’m going to fight someone like Wanderlei that’s not going to try and take me down the whole fight”, that’s clearly a shot at Henderson IMO. Anyway ever since Franklin choked against.

Anyway this should be a great fight because either Franklin or Wanderlei are going down. I said before that Frankoin needs to be more “tough” and more “bad motherfu*ker like” because he’s been looking softer lately. He can make a huge statement if he comes in and ko’s wanderlei.

I’m rooting for Wanderlei because i want to see him earn a shot at the 185 title and hopefully face Anderson Silva and i’m rooting for him to knock out Franklin because Franklin is a sore loser who thinks he’s better than what he actually is.

Dan Hardy has done an awesome job of getting into marcus Davi’s head which i feel gives Hardy the advantage because Davis is so pissed he might not focus and be reckless, however Davis has way more skills than Hardy and i’m hoping he can take out the overarated “Outlaw” and keep his streak against the UK guys.

Mike Swick is acting like he’s beat a whos who in the 170 division calling out Alves and St. Pierre, he better just focus on not getting Muay Thai’ed by Killa B because Killa B is for sure the most dangerous guy he’s faced in a while.

Should be a great card, i;m hoping that Mirjo Cro-cop can bring back his trademark and ko Al-Turk via left kick.

  • Jdubb says:

No complaints aboutthe card.. But if u cant sell out the arena how do u think u can justify chaging people for $44 bucks for it… its crap if u ask me.. And Tuf Finals should not count as a Free show Fr702 come on.. Smells like u are PRO Corp. and not PRO Consumer.. so i say **** paying for it and get the results early and dont bother paying for tape delay.. I may have been willing to get it if the tape delay was $25 bucks but hey who am i kidding. the UFC is all about the money….

    • Justin says:

“But if (y)u(o) cant(sic) sell out the arena how do (y)u(o) think (y)u(o) can justify chaging(sic) people for $44 bucks for it”
First time in a new country with the media printing libelous material about the sport (including claims that they fight to the death) and the government banning anyone under the age of 18, I think it might be a bit difficult to sell out a 20,000 seat arena. That said, the UFC have still nearly done so. Then take into consideration that even though they “can’t sell out the arena” there will be more people there than at Liddell v. Rashad.

“And Tuf Finals should not count as a Free show Fr702 come on.”
They are free, and they are a show, and there will be some good fights…meets all the qualifications.

“Smells like (y)u(o) are PRO Corp. and not PRO Consumer.”
You can smell things through your computer? Besides that, what difference does it make? If the consumers don’t support the business the business ceases to exist, this card is good, and well worth the money. Therefore, the consumers will pay for the product and support the company, and therefore support the fighters since they get PPV bonuses based on a percentage of PPV sales. Since you are not willing to pay for the card, I better not see you complaining about fighter pay. By your unwillingness to spend money on the product they (the fighters) offer, you are part of the problem, not a part of the solution.

“the(sic) UFC is all about the money….”
It’s called running a business. If there’s no profit, there is no point to the business. PPV sales = profit for the UFC. In addition, I don’t think they are “all about the money” but money is important. If they didn’t make money they would end up like Pride, EliteXC, IFL, etc.

      • fr702 says:

As far as me being Pro UFC or whatever, or better yet Pro ZUFFA… Hey look I’m a business man bottom line, I understand supply and demand, this is a business and a big business at that.. I too am a crazy MMA fan, I watch it all the time every org out there, I personally support (in various ways) many orgs, if you don’t think that these company’s are here to make a profit you’re simply kidding yourself…

Trust me I do get what you’re saying bout the tape delay and whatnot well then watch it live, wait for a stream, check youtube do what you have to do… It is clear that you aren’t just a casual observer of the sport (you do post on a MMA website and all, not everyone does that) and you might believe that the evil UFC is just a money hungry company and they don’t care about anything other than the bottom dollar…. But ZUFFA does give its fair amount of “free” cards per year and you know what these little give me cards have some of the best fights in recent memory, I do accept TUF 9 Finale as a free card, because it simply is….. ZUFFA does alot for us fans and well does a helll of alot for the sport of MMA… Now you have StrikeForce coming in very strong, Bellator doing well, Affliction someday is going to have their third card, DREAM is just sick, K~1 & K~1 MAX is great, you have pleanty of MMA out there and still the leader bar none is UFC who is giving us more events in a 4 week period than
Affliction has ever given us and hey one of them is free…

  • bigchris2328 says:

guys can someone please clarify this for me, is 99 going to be live at 3 pm here in the states? what time is it being shown live in the states? is it not being shown live in the states at all?

  • ERizzle says:

Ok, I never assume an overseas broadcast to be a freebie, and I think that is irrelevant. My philosophy is this: whether the card is US, UK, or Uganda, if there is not a title fight on the card, I’m not paying for it. Nearly every card that consists of a title I buy.

UFC 99 has some intriguing match-ups: I like Congo vs. Velasquez (much better than Herring….he’s still alive after Lesnar?) and I am interested in the Franklin vs. Silva. No title? No thank you.

You will definitely get my money at UFC 100, even if it is $100.

    • fr702 says:

that is definately your option and well if that is the way you get down by all means go for it… I disagree with you I don’t believe that every card Needs a title fight to get my money but I see what you are saying and hey thats the way you feel…. good on ya for that

  • Vinz_Clortho says:
