Roy Nelson and Wes Sims Added to TUF 10 Cast

Roy NelsonFormer IFL heavyweight champion Roy Nelson and UFC veteran Wes Sims are the latest heavyweights to be confirmed for the cast of The Ultimate Fighter 10, which is currently taping for a September 16th debut on Spike TV.

MMA Madness first reported the news on Monday citing a source close to the show.

Following five-straight wins, including a reign as the IFL’s heavyweight champion, Nelson (13-4) was defeated by Andrei Arlovski in October at EliteXC: Heat on CBS, then dropped a unanimous decision to Jeff Monson in March.

A member of Team Hammer House, Sims (21-12-1) had an unsuccessful 0-3 stint in the UFC between 2003 and 2004 that saw him lose to Frank Mir (twice) and Mike Kyle. After losing four-straight bouts between May 2007 and June 2008, Sims has since won three-straight bouts, including an 18-second KO of Jason DeAngelo in November in his most-recent fight.

Nelson and Sims join a cast that includes former street fighter and EliteXC headliner Kimbo Slice and NFL veterans Marcus Jones, Matt Mitrione, Brendan Schaub, and Wes Shivers.

as I said…they threw out the fight-ins because they have talent… not because they’re rigging it for Kimbo…

    • CC says:

They didn’t have fights to get in because 1) there are not a lot of quality HW’s out there – they simply develop more slowly (not less talented) 2) heavyweights hit way too hard to let them try to let them scrap before they get on the show (injury issues).

      • Chris L. says:

dude really? obviously you didn’t see tryouts. I know what goes on at heavyweight believe me it was years of my life…

  • Bibmo Slice says:

Roy Nelson is hands down the favorite.Bimbo Slice will get elimanated his 1st fight. How can they put Roy Nelson in this cast with C- to D- fighters….to me Roy Nelson is a B- to B+ material when on his game IMO.BiMbo is obvisously a publicity/ratings move on Dana’s part and i dont blame him in the least bit because he wants Bimbo to lose to expose him and all other street fighting thugs that they cant make it in MMA.This has to be the best season not only because the cast but because the coaches Rashad and Rampage im looking forward to TUF 10.

  • Eye-Rhyme says:

dayyyyyum…this is going to be a siiick season!!!
I remember reading something that was saying the ufc would not want Roy in the business because of his image! haha
the boy can fight though…hope he wins.

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

yea i thought big country was too big for the ufc in the gut area.

  • GarRule says:

They shouldn’t run in fear of the beer gut…I say celebrate it! I hope he wins.

  • Dietrich says:

I guess Sims has found redemption…When I saw him trying to be on Iron Ring I couldn’t help but wonder how much lower his life would sink…

  • Jason N. says:

These guys are all C level fighters AT BEST…none of these guys, including Nelson, is B or better… sure Nelson and Slice may have B..B+ maybe even A- power…but thats it… there is a reason they are on this show and not in the UFC now….if any of these guys were B+ fighters, they would be on a card somewhere now in the UFC

    • Jason N. says:

Forgot to add… with that being said, I cant wait for this show – though I think they are C level fighters, its going to be a great show – it will rank up there with Season 1 for excitement I think, and prob will break all previous numbers for views…

    • bzul3 says:

Ok???? And ur point is???? When has there ever been a “known” B+ or A level fighter on TUF? Its a entry level show.

      • Jason N. says:

My point is from the guy towards the top of this thread who said Roy Nelson was possibly a B..B+ fighter….

  • Planck16 says:

IS LASHLEY ON THE SHOW OR WHAT? I AM SURE ONE OF US CAN HUNT AND SEE IF HE IS TRAINING AT HIS GYM OR HAS BEEN SEEN IN VEGAS? HE WOULD BE THE FAVORITE!

    • chrisl says:

for the last time… NO. He’s still signed on for his June 27th fight with Bob Sapp and filming has already started. Plus to say he’d be the favorite is about the furthest thing from accurate. He’d have just as much chance as Kimbo or Marcus Jones. Roy Nelson is the favorite if anyone is.

  • chrisl says:

It almost seems this is prove how bad you want to be here season.

Yeah they said Nelson was “too fat” for the UFC, in all honesty I can see why they’d say that. It’s not so much his size as they were probably worried they were getting a guy who was neglecting certain aspects of his training. I’m 275 so I’m a big guy as well but I don’t train full time anymore and I don’t have that gut, so I could see why the UFC would be a little worried. Plus it’s not unheard of for a professional sports organization to ask a guy to lose weight or tone up, the NFL puts it in contracts all the time. I just get the feeling that Dana is putting a bunch of guys in the house that feel they have something to prove and are already professionals in some manner of speaking. It poses a lot of interesting questions for the season like can Kimbo fully commit to training? Will nelson’s skill outlast some of the more “conventional” athletes in the cage? Will marcus jones fist touch the back of someone’s skull after a punch to the face? Will forrest show up and net both rampage and rashad… either way I’m interested.

  • eldiablo says:

Will they allow cage-grabbing head stomps this season to accomodate Sims’ only skill?

But seriously, this will definately be the best TUF season ever. It’s a “The Comeback” of a newer generation. I wonder though how Evans and Jackson will handle 16 dudes who (for the most part, IMO) could whoop them both.

  • fr702 says:

The next season is simply going to be interesting to say the least, Roy Nelson and Kevin Ferguson living together well that is just going to be some entertaining tv right there…

I would have to say that this is a winner gets in and the rest well they just weren’t good enough for the UFC… I by no means am a fan of Kevin Ferguson yet if he wins the show than so be it I guess..

Nelson has the talent, now what happens when/if he actually trains, he is imo very capable of winning the show….

Wes Simms v Kevin Ferguson should be the first fight of TUF 10 imo…

  • Jazzkok says:

Based on the competition, i’d say Roy Nelson is the favorite. I think he’s got some talent too but i’d think he’d be wayy better if he got rid of that keger! It’s going to be interesting to see these dudes in the house together. And being coached by rampage and Rashad ? It’s going to be a good season.

  • This season should be good, they have all the semi big names coming in. Nig Country has the talent to take it all, but if he really wants to be more serious now, he needs to get in better shaape because a good shot to that gut will put him down easy, especially from other hard hitters.

  • I doubt that Kevin “kimbo Slice” Ferguson will win the contract because i’m sure the other guys already know that he’s weak on the ground and can take advantage of that, plus he showed a very weak chin on his loss to Seth Petruzelli. He has a decent shot to win,but so do the other guys.

Roy Nelson has experience and a decent overall game, i’d love to see him go toe to toe with Slice, maybe i’ll get my wish, but honestly, the UFC is smart buy giving these guys a shot because they are for sure going to get huigher ratings now that they have another “star” like Big Country.

  • surfingk5 says:

@ bs…He’s not fat, just big boned…I would bet he’ll be at the top in the end of the season

  • Tw@ says:

I was surprised to see Big Country having to TUF his way into the UFC especially when the likes of Neil Grove, Stefan Struve and Mustafa Al-Turk to name a few were offered numerous fight contracts, personally I rate Roy Nelson high than those 3 cats and a handful of others in the HW division and I also consider him unlucky to have been beaten by Arlovski. Will Kimbo be promoted under his alias or as Kevin Ferguson? What do you guys think? Finally after all the smack Dana spoke about Kimbo and on that occasion the insult he gave to Big Country he better watch his back! Finally finally theres quite a bit experience being brought into TUF 10 and there may not be a lot of coaching required allowing a lot of time for some black on black crime. WAMMA BAMMA THANK YOU MAMMA

    • ckdiesel says:

lol.. im hoping for lots of “black on black crime”, and that Jackson has a more successful run on TUF then his last stint.. wasnt CB the only fighter from his team to win a match?

      • huertarogerhuerta says:

dan kramer won too. how long do u guys think itll take kimbo to get in on “the black on black crime”

    • Justin says:

Those guy three names you mentioned received four fight contracts that have a clause requiring them to at least win one of the first two fights. The TUF contract does not seem to have any such clause, and seems to help exclude fighters that go on a losing streak from the usual two and you go rule. *coughjoestevensonandmacdanzigcough*

  • j.cohl says:

I’m really glad to see TUF 10 getting some quality fighters, but I have to think that for Roy “Cartman” Nelson having to “TUF” his way into the UFC is sort of a backhanded compliment at best, no?

  • White_Boy says:

Sorry, but I sort of agree with Dana about Roy ‘Big fat country’ nelson. The people that show up to a MMA match looking to be in the shape that he is don’t usually have the drive and/or ability to go out and fight a good fight for 15 minutes, let alone 25. Maybe he is a freak of nature and has the cardio of a man that weighs a third of what he does, but I think he just likes donuts way too much.

  • GarRule says:

Don’t forget, Dana has been preaching for years that the UFC is mixed martial arts, and not no-holds-barred, bare-knuckled brawling. Nelson’s look just reaks of mid 90’s cagefighting, tough-man style. Dana wants to promote athletes and to be taken seriously by the media.

I still hope he wins. You can’t have a beer gut without beer and guts…love this guy.

  • Vinz_Clortho says:

    Let the freak show begin!!!!!

I just hope Kimbo lasts long enough to fight someone in the back yard ! ! ! omggggggg bonersssssss

    (No fighter bashing. -Justin)
