Strikeforce “Lawler vs. Shields” Results: Shields Submits Lawler, Rogers KOs Arlovski
Jake Shields needed less than half a round to submit Robbie Lawler in the main event of Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields on Saturday, forcing Lawler to tap to a guillotine choke 2:02 into the opening round of their catchweight headliner.
8,867 fans attended the Showtime-televised event at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
Following the win, which improved Shields’ record to 23-4-1, the former EliteXC welterweight champion called for a middleweight title bout against Strikeforce champ Cung Le. Le, however, is not expected to defend his title for the indefinite future while pursuing a movie career and Shields may be forced to face another opponent for an interim title before Le returns. Lawler, a former EliteXC middleweight champion, falls to 18-5 following the defeat.
Heavyweight contender Brett Rogers needed just 22-seconds to knockout Andrei Arlovski with a flurry of punches in the Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields co-headliner. Rogers, who improved to 10-0 with the win, will next meet Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem on a future Strikeforce card, while Arlovski’s future is less certain after falling to 15-7 with his second-straight knockout loss.
In other main card action, Nick Diaz overwhelmed Scott Smith with punches over two full rounds before forcing Smith to tap to a rear naked choke in the third and Joe Riggs and Mike Whitehead picked up unanimous decision victories over Phil Baroni and Kevin Randleman respectively.

Today my question is not what’s the future of Brett Rogers but what Arlovski gonna do next? 2 of his last fights ended with str8 ko in first round.
Overall the card was entertaining. I want some1 to beat diaz? Is there any1 can do this job out side of UFC?
Belfort, if Diaz were to go to MW, but if he moves back to WW it’s hard to think of someone that could beat him outside of the UFC. Inside the UFC there is a long list of people than can beat him, at both weights.
I highly doubt AA will get into boxing now!!!!
Me Personally I never thought robbie Lawler was that good. Just IMO.
Diaz never looked like much at all but man can he fight and even though his punches do look like much they obviously carry some heavy heat behind them.. Hasn’t he finished his last 3 opponents now??
Brett Rogers earned some respect.
Real estate price is lowest now. He can buy a big house.
Hate or love Nick Diaz, but he knows how to annoy and confuse his opponents! Very smart, but Smith did catch him a few times when Diaz would purposely stick his chin out. Good fight.
someone should take down AA’s name under “popular tags” to the right of the page…
haha good one mate
Too bad for Arlovski. The HW division is stacked with really hard hitting guys, so I don’t know that he can really be classified as a “glass chin”, but he certainly got beat by a relatively new fighter so that alone is going to crush his career. It’s a sad day when you may have to fight your way back onto the main card in a strike force event.
I didn’t think Scott Smith would be able to beat Diaz. Smith has little to no head movement and he is perfect for a punching bag. He does hit hard for sure, but he is tailor made for Diaz to expose him. Too bad
Over all great fights though. Shields is really starting to look impressive in my eyes. I’d love to see him against Fitch, Alves or GSP.
Shields fihting Fitch probably won’t happen because they train together… maybe Strikeforce should throw 2 of there unstoppable guys at each other Shields vs Diaz
*** fighting
Shields doesn’t train with Fitch, however he does train with Diaz. That is the fight that won’t happen
listening to the commentators, you’d think that lawlor was dominating. lawlor was moving fwd but sheilds was landing good kicks and was fighting smart.
i got the feeling that although sheilds was backing up slightly he was controlling where the fight didn’t go. and he did ultimately control where it went.
AA fight was disapoitingly short. rogers as a beast. while there are a few questionable chin moments in AA’s career, it’s hard to label him with a glass jaw because he got tagged be fedor and rogers when they still have that early on in the fight power. the first minute is a time to get quick KO’s.
fedor knows how to fight guys with very heavy hands. when he fought mark hunt he was cautiouly aggresivness to make sure hunt wasn’t having a free ticket to go wild.
carwin and lesnar and no rogers have a new level of power.
carwin looks the best of the 3 brock doesn’t actually look great skill wise but has speed and freakish power. brett we’ll see. hopefuly he won’t have to meet barnett who is only slightly smaller and way more skilled and has a great chin. i’d actually give brett a better chance against fedor – but again that’d be way too soon. overeem might even still be too much
With the horrible standup Shields displayed, IMO he would have no chance at the top of the UFC ladder. Rogers, well I think AA has a glass chin for sure but, not to many guys could take the shots he took and walk away. How the hell is Arlovski suppose to box professionally when he has no head movement and his footwork is lackluster backing stright up as mentioned in the broadcast. Take Brett down like you should with anyone who has the strength in there hands like he does. Diaz, his punches look like they couldn’t hurt a fly. They are obviously more effective then they look. Good fights for free no doubt.
pretty good card with bad results IMO.Diaz,as much as can’t stand him is really becoming a force. With each fight and each taunt i hate him more and more.I don’t think there’s a fighter out there i’d rather see get knocked out.
I dont see how AA expects to be a decent pro boxer when he cant get out of the way of an mma guys punches. pro boxers (even amateurs) punches are crisper, more pinpoint and faster. not to take anything away from rogers, but damn AA move!!! or bob and weave, dont stand straight up with no foot movement.
diaz looked eh, strikeforce is giving him layups in my opinion. I would love to see him get beasted in the ufc. fitch would pick him apart. say what you want about fitch, but he is top 3 at 170 in the ufc, maybe top 5 in the world at that weight IMO. and if diaz wants to fight at 185 in the ufc let him, he will lose to any of the top 5 guys there, hendo, A. Silva, maia, marquardt, bisping, he would even lose to the other guys like cote, wandy, rich, okami, even dare i say leben.
shields didnt impress me, but he looked like he was controlling the fight. lawler probably wouldve came out more aggressive in the 2nd and there wouldve been fireworks.
man that sux for arlovski man!!! shields will never impress me till he fights an elite fighter!!!
Good fights aside dont gus johnson and mauro ranallo realy make these shows seem akward. From the pauses to the mistakes to the stupid one liners, over-exagerated lines, franks braces, the list goes on and on oh ya and “Two straight knock-outs in a row for Fedor” like come on.
Anyways Randleman should hang em up soon, riggs looked good besides his takedown defence. Diaz was Diaz Smith was Smith no real surprises there. Rogers. well what can ya say wow. arlovski should keep growin that beard maybe itl help his chin. Lawler vs Diaz anyone. And jake should forget about mr. movie star and go to the UFC.
imo jake wouldnt fare well in the ufc. cung le should be stripped of his title, and the title should be vacated. if he wants to do movies fine, but its not fair to the fighters in that division not get to face the champ because he wants to be a actor. I do not like the commentators, thats why I watch the fights on mute after the first dumb comment. I heard johnson say that joe riggs had the reach advantage against baroni, and then mauro said it was baroni that had the advantage by an inch, johnson then says its different if the guy is taller, when you fight a taller guy, the little guy needs to jump to hit him in the head. WTF! homeboy needs to study up on his mma knowledge. I laughed and proceeded to mute the rest of the event. strikeforce needs better commentators, bill goldberg was better than both of those guys combined, even if you add frank shamrock, imo goldberg was better.
i missed the card…how did Riggs look?
Impressive. One of his best fights for sure.
I had a feeling shields would submit lawler. Even after training with miletich and with hughes, lawler seems to always have trouble on the ground. Shields should atleast fight once more before he tries to become an “actor”. What’s the deal with him wanting to act dude? He must kik it with roger huerta.
Arlovski…wtf dude. Two ko losses in a row? And to rogers? Andre should have won this fight. He’s a better fighter and wayyy more experienced.
I knew diaz was going to run through smith cuz smith is whatever. Diazz is a great fighter, but he needs better opponents. I know he’s finished his last couple of fights, but the guys he’s finishing aren’t even top ten. I think he’s a great fighter and would do well if he returned to teh ufc
It’s Cung Le that wants to be the actor. And it’s probably safe to say that Rogers(10-0)has some of the heaviest hands in mma.Diaz,no surprise there.Regardless what people think of him,the boy can fight.
that’s right i got confused. thanks dude
Diaz….won in the third round. there was no running through anything involved.
It took till the third round for Diaz to pick up the win, but Smith offered next to nothing in terms of offense. I get what you’re saying, and I can’t stand Diaz (as you should know), but he outclassed Scott Smith. I do, however, feel that outclassing Scott Smith doesn’t exactly mean a whole lot.
I absolutley think diaz would get destroyed in the ufc. What has he really done lately? He beat up another aged washed up shamrock and then beat up smith who has done what exactley?I know he KO’d benji but he was getting his ass whooped the hole fight.Smith is know doubt an exiting fighter and i respect him and love watching him fight but i don’t think beating him is that significant.
No disrespect or taking anything away from Brett Rogers, but it looked as if Arlovski didn’t take this fight serious. He was just looked bad man, and i know he’s better than that, or he just can’t take a good punch anymore, but congrats to Rogers for taking out a top Heavyweight and making some noise for himself. I honestly don’t see Rogers as a top Heavyweight, still even if he defeated Arlovski, but I give the guy his credit.
I found myself in conflict as to who i was truly rooting for, Shields or Lawlor because I like and respect both guys. I wanted to see a longer fight, but Shields looked good early on. Shield imressed me, i know he’s a great ground fighter, but i thought that Lawlor’s standup was going to give him the win, but Shields got’em.
Shields is a tough dude and keeps imprving> I hope he can make his way into the UFC soon because the guy can for sure take out some of the UFC’s top welterweights, he’s not exactly a complete fighter, but has top notch ground skills. He should forget about Cung Le and set his sights to the big leagues in the UFC, he’s good enough and has lots of experience not to mention a 12 fight win streak and for sure has what it takes to make a run for the 170 pound title in the UFC, but i guess we have to wait and see what happens.
As for Lawlor, I would like to see him in the UFC as well. Despite his loss to Shields, Lawlor is still a young dude who’s still grwoing and has developed a lot of experience at his age. He is one of the few guys at 185 that I personally feel can knock out any guy at 185, i hope he bounces back and he’s a dude that can be a threat to anyone in the UFC’s 185 division. Kinda dissapointed with that fight because i expexted a 2-3 round battle, but it was still worth watching.
I know a lot of people don’t like Nick Diaz and don’t give him the credit of being a top fighter, but the dude is sick as hell. I’ve always been a fan and hate him or not, he’s a guy that can stand and fight awesome on the ground. He’s really coming into his own and showing more and more well rounded skills and improving ech time we see him fight and he has a 5 fight tko streak. He beat Gomi,Shamrock and now Smith. I would love to see him fight Cung Le for the belt. He’s developing a good record at a young age and he’s just getting better overall.
This was a sick card with food fights, i’m too big on Strikeforce, but this was problably my favorite card that they have put on.
Diaz move to middleweight? No chance. He made EXC create a weight class for him (sub-welterweight) and he still couldn’t take the belt from Pretty Boy Noons.
He’s been fighting has-beens and nobodies on his 5 fight win streak before Shields. Everyone here said Milletich was fighting a nobody in Thomas Denny…the same one that Diaz fought in that streak.
He hasn’t showed me anything except that he’s a lisping punk who can beat sub-par challengers.
Lawler v. Diaz next?
Feel bad 4 AA
he should calm down and play it smart next time…
Just a question to the collective out there – does AA [average fight weight 233 I think] have any possibility or willingness to drop down to LHW to maybe prolong his career and avoid the new and almost mutant-level of striking power being exhibited by HW’s like Lesnar, Carwin, and now Brett Rogers??
Or has a legit “glass chin” been exposed, and regardless of weight class AA’s “15 minutes of MMA fame” so to speak have run out?
I don’t think he could make the cut, and I don’t think it would matter, AA is only a slightly better than mediocre fighter, and is probably on the backside of his career.
As much as i truly respect your comments justin i have to dissagree with arlovski being a mediocre fighter. A mediorce fighter to me is someone like herring or hardonk. I just think he’s realy hot and cold. With what he did to rothwell, some of the boys in the UFC and that first few minustes against fedor should prove his skills, but i guess if you balance it out with his poor showings i can see your point. Anyways I just feel that when hes on his game AA is one of the best HW in the world.
I said slightly better than mediocre. I agree that he is better than Herring or Hardonk, but I think that Arlovski is not a top tier fighter. He may have been at one point in his career, but he is not now. Not to mention, a 15-7 record isn’t exactly stellar, he’s lost almost half as many as he’s won. The biggest thing is that he has shown a bit of a glass jaw recently, and usually when fighters get brutally KOed it only makes their jaw weaker, he has just done so twice. He also struggled against Roy Nelson (though he did get the win), before these last two losses.
it almost looks like it was stopped prematurely from the first angle. on the replay you can clearly see that he melted, but started recovering before hitting the ground. does anyone think that he could have grabbed onto something and get a full recovery? i think that he probably would have taken some unnesessary damage before getting stopped had mcarthy let it go on. i felt so bad for AA but i think that hes past his time and falls into the same category as alot of the other fighters that we all once loved
In regards to the Arlovski/Rogers fight, this might also be a case of a well-established fighter, in this instance Arlovski, not evolving with this ever-changing sport. As much respect as I have for Chuck Liddell, he never seemed to be able to evolve past his Pit/Hackleman training, and it cost him several fights IMO, along with age and wear and tear.
I’m not 100% certain as to the particulars of AA’s training regimen, but as far as I can tell AA is basically the same fighter he was 4 years ago. In MMA 4 years is almost a lifetime. Perhaps AA needs to expand his skillset in order to continue earning a living at HW. Possibly use his quality stand-up to set up some shoot-style takedowns and submissions, or something else that can cover the glaring weakness of his suspect chin…
im starting to regain my respect back for diaz. what can i say hes earning it. i actually think he can fare well in the ufc. nick diaz must be the most hated fighter in mma next to kimbo
Kalib Starnes, Ken Shammy Shamm, Jacob “Tito” Ortiz, Michael Bisping, Brock Lesnar, and sooo many more…………..
“First few minutes against Fedor” wow.. common guys AA sucks balls and it is wishful thinking of UFC fanboys that AA had Fedor in trouble. Let’s let AA die off now plz the guy is so bad. AA fights are 90% of the time a letdown.. they always have been. FOREVER.
