UFC 71: Liddell vs. Jackson II Confirmed

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Mar 19, 2007 at 10:41 am ET3 Comments

The back-and-forth match rumors surrounding a Chuck Liddell and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson rematch have been confiremed and the match will be taking place at UFC 71 on May 26th according to Jackson’s trainer Juanito Ibarra through Grag Jackson of Sherdog.com.

The match was thrown into questionable status for a variety of reasons including Chuck Liddell having to postpone training due to pnemonia and Jackson’s want for another tune-up fight before the title shot.

Liddel (20-3 MMA, 14-2 UFC) is the current light heavyweight champion and holds more UFC experience compared to Rampage’s (26-6 MMA, 1-0 UFC) one UFC fight, a win at UFC 67 against Marvin Eastman. In their first meeting at PRIDE in 2003 Jackson beat Liddell with a second round TKO making this fight even more intriguing.

An official announcement from the UFC is expected by tomorrow.

Here is the card that is rumored so far for UFC 71 in Las Vegas:

Chuck Liddell vs. Quinton Jackson
Keith Jardine vs. TBD
Karo Parisyan vs. Josh Burkman
Ivan Salaverry vs. Terry Martin
Chris Leben vs. Kalib Starnes
Eric Schafer vs. Sean Salmon

i dont understand why they doin this fight so early…other light heavy weights deserve a shot more then this guy he only won 1 fight and he even said he wants a few fights to tune up, and i understand that the fans want to see this fight happen……they should give the chance to someone whos earned it like keith jardine or rashad evans maybe even through forrest in there hes a good fighter and he deserves a shot (even though he lost in bad fashion to keith jardine) others desreve that oppurtunity…on a lighter note since the ufc is buyin out pride lets see a real fight heres a few matchups i wouldnt mind seeing

    1. shogun vs the iceman

    2.shogun vs silva (anderson)

    3. wandi vs the iceman

    4. (since i wanna see tim sylvias carrer end)
    fedor vs sylvia

i cant think of anything else so i’ll leave it at that

I agree with you matchups and think as long as the deal is finalized we will see most if not all of them eventually.

I don’t know why the UFC did the fight so early other than the fact Chuck might have requested it as soon as he knew Rampage was in the UFC. I think they both could have benifitted from at least having this fight pushed back but no matter the result I would expect to see a rematch soon, especially if Chuck loses.
