Before UFC 176 got cancelled, featherweight champion Jose Aldo was set to face Chad Mendes. Aldo had to pull out of the fight due to injury. The rematch is scheduled to take place in mid-October.
If Aldo cannot go, the UFC is seeking a possible interim title fight. Who will be in this fight? Well, right now, it would be between Cub Swanson and Frankie Edgar. Both who have won their last fights. During an appearance on Fox Sports Live, UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta said somebody else might step up to fight Mendes for the chance at an interim featherweight strap.
Mendes is 6-0 in the UFC with a 16-1 overall MMA record and ranked behind only light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones in the organization’s pound-for-pound rankings. He has won his last five fights. The last time he challenged for a UFC title and his last lost was against none other than Jose Aldo via 1st Rd KO back in January of 2012.
Cub Swanson (20-5) Has eight knockouts, seven submissions and five decision victories in his MMA career. He is currently on a five fight winning streak. He beat Ross Pearson via knockout at UFC on FX 4 – Maynard vs. Guida on Jun / 22 / 2012, then Charles Oliveira via unanimous decision at UFC 152 – Jones vs. Belfort on Sep / 22 / 2012, then Dustin Poirier via knockout at UFC on Fuel TV 7 – Barao vs. McDonald on Feb / 16 / 2013 and finally Dennis Siver via knockout at UFC 162 – Silva vs. Weidman on Jul / 06 / 2013. He is coming off a win over Jermey Stephens via unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 48-47) at UFC Fight Night 44 on June 29, 2014.
Frankie Edgar (17-4) Has five knockouts, three submissions and nine decision victories. He has never been finished in his MMA career. Edgar made his UFC debut way back in 2007 with a win over Tyson Griffin. In his last five fights prior to TUF 19 Finale against BJ Penn, he is 2-3. Edgar beat Gray Maynard via KO at UFC 136 – Edgar vs. Maynard 3 on Oct / 08 / 2011. Edgar then dropped three straight fights, he lost to Benson Henderson via unanimous decision at UFC 144 – Edgar vs. Henderson on Feb / 26 / 2012, then Benson Henderson via split decision at UFC 150 – Henderson vs. Edgar 2 on Aug / 11 / 2012 and finally against Jose Aldo via unanimous decision at UFC 156 – Aldo vs. Edgar on Feb / 02 / 2013.
Edgar then got a win over Charles Oliveira via unanimous decision at UFC 162 – Silva vs. Weidman on Jul / 06 / 2013. Edgar is coming off a win over BJ Penn via 3rd RD TKO at TUF 19 Finale on July 6th, 2014.
This is just a rumor and has yet to be confirmed.
