Gegard Mousasi vs. Vitor Belfort Added to Affliction 3 Lineup

Gegard MousasiGegard Mousasi, who was victorious over Mark Hunt on Tuesday at DREAM 9, will take on Vitor Belfort at Affliction’s third event on August 1st in Anaheim, California.

Mousasi revealed the matchup in a post-fight interview at M-1Global.com.

A winner of twelve-straight fights, Mousasi captured the DREAM middleweight championship by defeating Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in the finals of the 185-pound grand prix in September. Mousasi would never defend the title, however, relinquising the belt to move up to light heavyweight and fight in DREAM’s super hulk open-weight tournament, which kicked off today in Japan with Mousasi scoring a first-round submission of the much larger Hunt to secure a spot in the semis later this year.

Belfort, a former UFC light heavyweight champion who has won four-straight and five of his last six, was last in action in January at Affliction: Day of Reckoning, defeating Matt Lindland via first-round knockout.

Despite both fighters recently competing in the 185-pound middleweight division, the bout is expected to take place at a light heavyweight limit of 205-pounds.

Affliction 3 will air live on pay-per-view and also features Fedor Emelianenko vs. Josh Barnett, Paul Buentello vs. Tim Sylvia, Paul Daley vs. Jay Hieron, and Dan Lauzon vs. Chris Horodecki.

A 205lbs bout between these two is going to be wonderful, I do however see Mousasi coming away with the W but Belfort is coming back into his own, good bout forsure….

I see Belfort with Knock Out by 1st or 2nd round , no disrespect to Mousasi ,I’ve seen him fight a few times now, I just don’t see anyone stopping Belfort right now. Just that Linland knock out was so sweet I’ve never saw Linland in trouble like that before not even verus Rampage. The only people who I’d like to see Belfort fight beside Mousasi is Rampage/Anderson Silva/Cung Lee/Robbie Lawlor/Lyoto Machida.
Mousasi can submit Belfort but one he has to get close enough to take him down which he’ll be eatting some punchs on the way in. Belfort is no slouch when it comes to wrestling, watch out people if you blind you may miss the knock out ..because Belfort is back

If you are BLIND you most likely won’t view much of the fight…

David Terell v Matt Linland is a pretty good comparison, but Belfort essentially ended Matt’s career imo…

I really like Vitor but I don’t know if he is a hundred percent “back” time will tell with him…

Also Mousasi has A LOT of power in his hands as well..

      • ufcmanz says:

True about the Terell’s fight ,but that was like 3-4 years ago sense then he has fought Fedor and Rampage both of them have good power in there hands but the reason why Belfort owns Lindland because of his accuracy/power just overall good striking ,Mousasi does have good power I agree aswell it’s just a gut feeling.. I just feel Belfort will technically out strike him.

  • Brandon Harris says:

do you think the UFC will sign either of these guys after this fight?

    • fr702 says:

I personally believe this, and I could totally be wrong but…..

Mousasi will not be signed by the UFC til his contract with FEG/DREAM is “up”, I don’t see Vitor going back to the UFC right after this fight but definately could happen..

If this Affliction event takes place this could easily be thier last event ever, with all of the Major fighters contracts being done after the 3rd fight for Affliction, so then the likes of Fedor and Barnett contract are finished and therefore a “freeagent”… So I think that Tom Atencio will have in motion to resign all of the major fighters… So perhaps Mr. Atencio and Mr. Coker will be in negotiations over the next few months for StrikeForce to “take Over” the assets of Affliction, it is a possibility imo…. And this is an interesting time with Fedor’s contract coming to an end with Affliction what does the UFC do in regards to attempting to sign The Last Emperor?

      • Jazzkok says:

Vitor’s looked good in his last fights. I wasn’t that impressed with the linland ko. ANyone could have gotten ko’d like that. I think the tide is flowing in favor of belfort and if he did sign with the ufc, he would have a rude awakening. He’s a good fighter and he’s a tough dude and i’ve been a fan of his since wayy back, but…i mean leben ko’d terry martin too…leben!

      • chrisl says:

While you are right my friend about Mousasi not being even considered until his contract is up and Belfort taking more time. Affliction actually does not hold the exclusive reigns to almost all of their major fighters. Barnett is still w/ World Victory Road and Fedor w/ M-1 (also the M-1 deal has ties to DREAM as well). So essentially they could buy Affliction’s assets but it’d be like the UFC taking over Pride more than the Strikeforce-ProElite deal. Most of the fighters wouldn’t actually be in Strikeforce after a deal like that.

  • Dr.doom says:

Not too worried what happens after this fight ….. just want to watch them in this one . I see it going 3 mins with a sub win for mousasi . Simply because gegard has the hands to weather the initial attack or even cancel it out all together then take him down for the sub . Belfort should have gone over to DREAM after he beat lindland .
