Charles Oliveira might now have been the dominate guy in this fight, but he did come out of it with a win in his pocket. A very entertaining fight between Charles Oliveira and Hatsu Hioki that was one of the highlights of UFC Fight Night 43.
Charles Oliveira fought the top caliber in the UFC and had a setback. He has been with the UFC since 2010 and in his last five fights he 3-2. He beat Eric Wisely via submission back in January of 2012, but lost to Cub Swanson via KO at UFC 152. Another loss to Frankie Edgar via unanimous decision at UFC 162 put him with a two fight losing streak. However, he came back to beat Andy Ogle via triangle choke back in February of this year.
Hatsu Hioki is coming off a win over Ivan Menjivar back in March of this year via unanimous decision. Since joining the UFC back in 2011 he has a 3-3 record. He beat George Roop when making his debut at UFC 137 via Split Decision. He then went on to beat Bart Palaszewski at UFC 144 at the beginning of 2012 via unanimous decision. However, he began a three fight losing streak. He lost to Ricardo Lamas via unanimous decision back in June of 2012, Clay Guida via Split Decision in January of 2013 and then Darren Elkins via unanimous decision back in August of 2013.
Here is the play-by-play from this fight:
Round 1: They come out in a feeling process, Hioki gets a clinch and puts him on the fence, he then takes him down. Oliveira tries to get out, but Hioki takes the back of Oliveira. However, Oliveira slides out and clinches, he puts Hioki on the fence, where he applies pressure. Hioki with another takedown which leads to side control. Oliveira postures up and leads Hioki back to guard. They stand once more, Hioki clinches and puts him on the fence. Oliveira reverses and gets a double leg takedown. He applies a choke, he has a darth choke, but Hioki gets out. Oliveira clinches and Hioki end the round in a dominant position while in the clinch.
Round 2: They come out swinging, but Oliveira gets a single leg takedown. Hioki gets up and gets a takedown of his own. He is in half guard, Oliveira is looking to sweep and he gets a leg lock. However, Hioki slides out and they stand. Oliveira appears to get poked in the eye, the doctor checks out his eye, were good to go. Once we get back into action, they exchange and Hioki takes down Oliveira. He is in guard, landing effect strikes. Oliveira reverses and keeps looking for chokes, triangles, guillotine chokes. However, what finishes this fight is an anaconda choke by Oliveira.
Result: Oliveira def. Hioki by submission (anaconda choke) at 4:23 of Round Two
