Former Strikeforce champ and current UFC lightweight Gilbert Melendez will meet Anthony Pettis and the two will coach on the Ultimate Fighter 20 for the Women’s strawweight division, which debuts in September on FOX Sports 1 and will crown the first champ in the weight class.
He wants a fight in Mexico and had this to say about the matter.
“It may become tough to stick to a game plan. Would love to fight in Mexico, and I see the doors opening up there. I’ve only been to Mexico City once, but I went to the pyramids out there, and you see your roots. I didn’t really learn that in high school, said Melendez. You see, your roots, where your blood is from and everything. I’m a proud American, but also, I’m proud of my roots and just being there, I felt a good energy. If I’m fighting, and it’s live, and I’m in front of my people, I think I would probably get caught in the moment. It might be a positive for me.”
Melendez (22-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) Prior to joining the UFC, he was on a seven fight winning streak. He lost to Benson Henderson via split decision in April of 2013. He beat Diego Sanchez in October of 2013 via unanimous decision in a classic war to earn the title shot against Pettis.
