Lightweight opponents Sean Sherk and Frank Edgar and welterweight rivals Matt Serra and Matt Hughes have all tested clean in drug tests administered by the Nevada State Athletic Commission ahead of UFC 98, which takes place on May 23rd in Las Vegas.

NSAC executive director Keith Kizer today confirmed the results to MMAFrenzy.com via email.

The tests were part of the NSAC’s in-training drug testing, which tests fighters before an event, instead of only on event night, to reduce the possibility of fighters cycling off performance enhancing drugs and avoiding detection. Though any fighter can be tested under the policy, headliners and past offenders are most commonly required to undergo the tests.

In other UFC 98 news, MMAjunkie is reporting that Mario Yamasaki will referee the event’s headlining bout between light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans and challenger Lyoto Machida.

i pullin for sherk cause i wanna see him fight kenny for the belt.
best case scenario for matt vs matt would be if hughes went out on a win and serra dropped to 155.

    • fr702 says:

I personally don’t think that Serra has the “drive” to cut down to 155, he also stated that he is taking his career on a fight by fight thought process.. Something like he beat GSP and if he beats Hughes he could always state that he be two of the g.o.a.t’s in WW division.. Should be interesting to see what happens on the 23rd

Nice to see that they passed their prefight drug test’s

  • Nice to know that Sherk is not on Roids.

    • carls says:

get off it marvel sean was never on roids in the first place he proved his innocence. Sherks the man.

      • dude yeah, i like SHerk also, but do me a favor, tell me why they stripped him of his belt then.

      • carls says:

because they found 12mg of nandrolone or however you spell it his blood instead of 6 which every man has.
        1. sean past two lie detector tests
        2. the guy is a healthfood and nutition freak like he would intentionally put that crap in his body.
        3. fighters after their off the juice have often looked less imposing ala tim silvia, sherk theirs no difference.
        4. nandrolone has been found in some suplements
        5. he took and passed a blood test, which right after the commission said whups and reduced his sentance but still stripped him to save face
        6. anyone who has tested positive for nandrolone before has had much larger amounts in their system like gracie at 50 mg

      • good stuff dude, that’s all i wanted to know :D

      • chrisl says:

Not to be a d!ck but Nandrolone is a steroid. It’s just a natural one. Normal athletic levels are 4ng/ml and his was 12ng/ml. HOWEVER, he was stripped of the belt because that is mandatory after CSAC upheld his suspension even though they reduced it and the kicker was this… some of the Xyience stuff was what was tainted and that of course is one of the biggest sponsors/suppliers to the UFC. Making it more ironic that his suspension was upheld but that’s CSAC for you.

    • muaythai4life says:

he also provided evidence to the california commission that would nearly completely exonerate him, but they chose to not even review it, postpone his hearing, and then simply reduce his suspension rather than review the evidence.

Good ole 9th district strikes again.

    • eldiablo says:

wonderful irony there. You watch any UFC around the time of Sherk’s suspension and EVERY fighter in their post-fight interview is pounding back some xyience energy drinks.

I’ve always been rooting for Sherk though. I’d like to see him get back to his destructive ways.

  • Machida by tko or sub in the late 3rd or Evans by luck in any round

Hughes by tko,sub or ref stoppage in the 3rd

Sherk by unanimus decision because the guy cannot finish anyone

    Fight of the Night: Evans-Machida
Submission of the Nigh: Hard to Call
Knockout of the Night: Machida or Evans

  • OnlyTrue1 says:

I noticed they put Referee Mario in the main eventer for Evans/Machida. Well at least we know he wont stop it too early.

  • dave flores says:

All i know is that Sherk was given a shot at the title and lost. Sherk is a boring fighter. 155 has so many explosive fighters the last thing it needs is some musclehead looking to hold people on the mat for fifteen minutes. We all know he can’t do that to Penn lets see what edgar has got.

Machida love him or hate him he has such a weird style and I see him winning a boring fight. But Please Rashad prove me wrong and knock him out. I want to see Rampage and Evans.

Serra and Hughes I can only see going to Hughes by submission or boring decision.
