All fight fans knew and wanted it, now it is official. Alexander Gustafsson will get his rematch against current, reigning, defending UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones this August. Dana White confirmed it at UFC 172, but now Gustafsson has officially signed on to fight Jones.
Jon Jones (20-1) has an 11 fight winning streak. He defeated Maurício Rua via TKO to win the title in 2011 and went on to defend his title six times with wins over fighters named: Quinton Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans, Vitor Belfort, Chael Sonnen and finally back in September against Alexander Gustafsson.
In his latest fight, he beat Glover Teixara at UFC 173. Jones dominated the last two rounds. He kept coming forward with elbows to the face that Teixeira had no clue how to do deal with. Jones landed what he wanted to when he wanted to. Teixeira tried to mount a comeback, but was overwhelmed and could not land anything bigger. Jon Jones def. Glover Teixeira via unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45)
“I don’t think he likes me. That’s all I can say,” Gustafsson said on an episode of the MMA Hour in April. “It is what it is and one day we will fight. Hopefully that day is soon. … I think I am in his head now.”
Jones and Gustafsson on Aug. 30 in Las Vegas at a pay per view event scheduled for the MGM Grand Garden Arena. No other fights have been announced for this card as of yet. Jones is expected to sign as well to fight Gustafsson soon. This should be epic.
