Middleweight Patrick Cote, who suffered a fight-ending knee injury in his October bout against UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, has announced that he’ll return to action in September.

Cote made the announcement on Facebook several days ago and reiterated the September date in an appearance on Inside MMA.

Prior to his loss to Silva, Cote (13-5) had won five-straight bouts, defeating Ricardo Almeida, Drew McFedries, Kendall Grove, Jason Day, and Scott Smith.

No event or opponent has yet been confirmed for his return to the octagon, he’s likely to fight at UFC 103 in the UK.

wouldnt mind seeing him fight the likes of sonnen, gouveia or irvin. glad to see hes back sooner than the expected 18 months.

  • There’s only a few things i admire about Cote. He came from the The Ultimate Fighter”The Comeback” and did comeback to work his way up to a title shot and he was not intimidated by Anderson Silva. However i feel he could have done more in his fight with Silva other than just make it to the 3rd round. Yes i know he got injured, but once he realized that he had just taken a few good and solid shots from Silva and was still standing, he could have attacked more and pressured Silva a bit more knowing he can take his shots, but he didn’t do that. He looked like he was either waiting for Silva to make a mistake so he can counter or just score a one punch”homerun” knockout which was not going to happen.

Now that he’s coming back i feel a suitable opponent for him would be Nate”Rock” Quarry. Or perhaps someone else. Who knows what would have happened if Cote hadn’t got injured, he had a decent shot, but also didn’t put Silva in danger at all.

Cote vs. Silva should happen again and I would love to see this fight be completed, but until then, Cote needs to get back on trck and put a few wins together agaisnt top 185er’s which is easier said than done.

good call on the cote v quarry matchup i wouldnt mind seeing that at all, cote would probably blast him though.

      • carls says:

i actually think cote is one of the best strikers at middleweight(his chin helps) and would handle most of the division if it stays on the feet.

  • bigchris2328 says:

I think he will get a “lay-up” against a weaker fighter, then maybe get the loser of maia-marquardt, or hendo-bisping loser. I still feel he is a top 5 mw, but would like to see him take on tough competition.

    • DigYourOwnHole says:

I agree that he will get a lay-up but I dont think either of those losers are exactly a lay-up. I’d go with the winner of Sonnen-Miller. Someone ranked around #10.

  • Justin says:

Glad he’s getting back in there relatively soon, hopefully it’s not too early though. I would like to see him face a mid-packer like the loser of Hendo v. Bisping, or winner of Sonnen vs. Miller, or maybe even Nate Quarry.

  • 1. Anderson Silva
    2. Demian Maia
    3. Dan Henderson
    4. Michael Bisping
    5. Nate Marquardt

That’s how i have the UFC 185’s top 5. Cote isn’t on there. My point is that he really needs to work his way back up to get back into the title mix and he has an uphill battle in front of him.

It’s good to know Cote will return soon but i feel he’ll become one of those fighters who just had one shot and didn’t deliver. Once you reach the top which Cote kinda did, the only place left to go is down so you better make good use of your shot at the top.

Cote can get another shot only if he beats 2 top guys in that division consecutively. If he can beat 2 top 5 guys that would put him back up there but i feel he will fail to do so. Now and days it’s easy to get left behind if your not keeping up with all the tough fighters out there tha keep putting up w’s like Maia, Machida,Thiago Alves and guys like them.

    • tjack says:

Idk man I think Marquardt could take “cocky” Bisbing. I believe he would pick him apart fairly easily.

      • the only reason i have Bisping above Marquardt is because he’s about to fight Henderson and most lkely whoever wins that fight gets the next title shot. And marquardt is behind in my rankings because he lost his shot at Silva and he lost to Leites,Bisping has only lost once and is undefeated at 185. I’m sure that Marquardt can take Bisping, nut for the moment he’s behind Bisping in the rankings.

      • i meant “but” for the moment….

      • fr702 says:

well I guess I can kinda see that rational, but beating McCarthy, Day and Leben by decision really isn’t top notch talent at the MW division….. Nate’s fight against Leites well ya just watch it I guess.. I personally think that the matchup between Maia and Nate is going to be better than the fight against Hendo and Bisping, I just don’t see the reasoning of having Bisping in the top 5 of anything at the moment but that is just me, you clearly do…

      • i agree with you about Bisping, i’m just assuming that the winner of Hendo and him will get a shot at the title, but your right, the fight with Maia and Nate seems to be better and make more sense for the next title shot. By no means am I a Bisping fan i just want to make that very clear, but if he were to beat Hendo he would be in line for a title shot so as much as i dislike him and his carp talking on TUF, i leave him in the top 5 only and i can’t stress this enough, only because if he does beat Hendo he’ll be in a position for a title shot, but i see what your saying

      • Or Maybe the winner of Hendo- Bisping will fight the winner of Maia-Marquardt to determine the 1 contender. marqurdt’s loss to Leites was very questionable but it still was a loss and that’s what counts. Maybe Marquardt should be considered to be higher in the rankings than Bisping, but Bisping is still in the top 5 UFC 185er’s

  • nightmare says:

i would really like to see him face marquart. i think maia would just submit him. i hope maia faces anderson silva if there is a guy to beat him its a submision master like maia

    • marvelknight says:

yeah I agree. Leites was able to take Anderson down, and so was Lutter! Come on Lutter! LUTTER! Lutter was able to mount, !!MOUNT!! Silva. LUTTER!……. So i agree, Maia is on a submission “frenzy” and doesn’t seem to be slowing down. There aare some guys who can problably beat Silva standing, but a better hope is a jj fighter like Maia.

    • carls says:

nobodys gonna beat anderson at least not at 185 heil retire with that belt. Granted if someone could beat silva i guess it would be maia but its still not gonna happen. I dont even see him getting past nate, marquardts to big to strong and to explosive. he just wont go to the ground with him and end up knocking maia out. Wait and see

      • marvelknight says:

Yeah Silva can ko Maia no question about that. However, if Maia does manage to get the fight to the ground, Silva will for sure be in danger.
I don’t think he”l retire with the belt, someone will beat him before the year ends..i’ll bet on it. Forrest is going to be the hero this year when he beats Anderson. You’ll see,but at 185, i don’t see Anderson Silva getting passed all his upcoming challenges.

      • marvelknight says:

!!!!!LUTTER!!!!!…….If he almost beat Silva on the ground. Maia or any other ground fighter sure has a good shot.

      • OnlyTrue1 says:

        Okay MK4

You wanted me so here I am. LUTTER!! LOL.. hahahah

        Your too much man…

  • thezanman says:

Its good to see Cote comming back
If Cote can land that right hand of his
he should move up the MW

  • bigchris2328 says:

right before the cote fight, there was a link here that said maia would get the next mw title shot, then we had the leites-silva debacle, and I think that the powers that be didnt want to have another jj ace face silva for the thought that the fight would turn out the same as leites-silva. so they announce maia-marquardt and im guessing the winner gets silva. I would like to see maia-marquardt but that eliminates a worth title contender. bisping has yet to prove he is worthy of a title shot. say he beats hendo, he needs to beat another top guy before he gets a shot. the same could be said of maia, only maia is a monster on the ground and if im not mistaken he is undefeated. the guy is like an anaconda. look at the past title contenders silva defeated… lutter(didnt beat two top contenders), cote (same as lutter), leites (won a controversial decision against marquardt). those guys all lost to silva and did not deserve a title shot. to me a guy should beat at least two top 5 guys in their weight class in order to get a title shot, unless the guy is just a beast in one aspect like jitz(maia), stand up (evans), a monster with potential (brock). then those guys should get a pass if they beat 1 top 5 guy. bisping is not in any category that I just mentioned, but I hope he gets a title shot so silva can destroy him. I said it before and I stand by it. The only guy that I think will beat silva at 185 is maia due to his jitz, and that seems like the only weakness silva has. I know he is a blackbelt in jj, but I dont think he can handle maia. maybe marquardt could beat silva, but I think maia is the best chance. I will know for sure who can beat silva on may 19th when I scientifically prove it by playing as maia against silva on UFC undisputed

  • Natsdad says:

Man there is some serious hatin goin on with Bisping, I think you guys are all in for a surprise. I know that a fight between Bisping and Silva would be a fantastic match up, Bisping always presses, never backs down and has a good solid ground game, he’s gonna destroy (and I’m not too keen on this either but it’s true) Henderson, And I think Silva will have his hands full taking on a fighter like Bisping that doesn’t slow down and pushes forward all the time. You have to admit he has a very good stand up game too. Just my opinion

    • Justin says:

He’s got a very technical stand up game, yes, but he doesn’t have a lot of power. If you look at their performance against a common opponent, Silva destroyed Leben, Bisping picked him apart to a decision.

  • mikewh says:

Great comments on here guys, whoever started the Cote vs Quarry…i dig the idea of that fight. Quarry’s got some serious stand up and has a pretty good record of destroying my fellow Canadians.
Who knows what Cote will be like coming back of an injury like that, will he ever get back to what he was?
Anyone agree it will take at few fights to get going again, i dont think the UFC has any patience at all or sympathy. I never expected a champion to arise out of Cote but i like the guy, he gives his honest best and has surprised many with his power and chin.
He didn’t roll on his back every time the Alpha male was near.

  • Vinz_Clortho says:

    OMFG ROFFLE someone has Bisping on their top 4 WW ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

That’s like saying someone is great at Tennis and they have only played Amateur tournaments.

Is Bisping good.. maybe. have we ever sen him fight someone who is top 5 so we can find out if he is good.. not a chance. He’s unproven, so please don’t talk about him like he’s good.

  • MIKE says:

i like cote vs quarry but i like cote vs the loser of hendo bisbing too or have hiim fight maia

  • pjs says:

Who do you think would be a good opponent for Cote? He said he wants top immediately fight a top 10 guy. I don’t know if any of them are available, and if not, then he would have to fight someone who is fighting soon or has just recently fought, so that the timing is right.

Nate Quarry was a great suggestion. Maybe even Ed Herman. Or, I was even thinking Tim Credeur would be an interesting match-up. Tim would have nothing to lose and much to gain, and is 3-0 in UFC finishing all of his opponents, and 6 fight win streak and is an entertaining fighter. This could be a good challenge and a great rebound fight for Cote.
