Jake Shields (29-7-1) was supposed to make his WSOF debut Jon Fitch (25-6-1) this summer. However, that is not going to happen, WSOF officials today confirmed Shields suffered an injury in training and has been forced to withdraw from the contest.
Fitch vs. Shields was expected to serve as the co-main event of WSOF 11, which takes place July 5 and may potentially air on NBC, but it will not be.
It is not known who will take the co-main event slot as of this writing.
WSOF lightweight champ Justin Gaethje meets Nick Newell in the headliner.
A timetable for his return is not known at this time.
Jake Shields has three knockouts, ten submissions and 16 decision victories in his career. He has been finished twice, which was 2 knock outs. He is a former Strikeforce Middleweight champion, and made his UFC debut in 2010 against Martin Kampmann. He won that fight, but lost against Georges St. Pierre in April of 2011 via Unanimous Decision. Since the GSP fight, his UFC record was and was released with a 3-2-1. He will be making his WSOF debut in this fight.
Jon Fitch is also a former UFC fighter. He was cut in February of 2013. He has five knockouts, five submissions and 15 Decision wins in his career. He has been finished four times in his career (2 ko’s & 2 Submissions) In his last four fights he is 2-2. Since being in WSOF, he is 1-1. He lost in his debut against Josh Burkman via Guillotine Choke in June of 2013, but got his first win in the promotion with a split Decision over Marcelo Alfaya in October.
