Daniel Cormier: Fighting Patrick Cummins Helped Me

Patrick Cummins

Daniel Cormier (14-0) has six knockouts, three submissions and five decision victories in his MMA career. In his last five fights he has beaten the top names that MMA has to offer. Well, he fights Dan Henderson (30-11) this Saturday night at UFC 173. He might not be a fan of Patrick Cummins, but it helped him in the long run.

“It allowed for me to make the weight. It allowed for me to get in the cage and fight at 205. I got my first finish inside the Octagon. So there were a lot of positives which came from the fight.”

He made his UFC return against Frank Mir and won the fight via unanimous decision at UFC on Fox 7 – Henderson vs. Melendez on Apr / 20 / 2013. He then beat Roy Nelson via unanimous decision at UFC 166 – Velasquez vs. Dos Santos 3 on Oct / 19 / 2013. He has been a heavyweight in his entire MMA career until his fight with Patrick Cummins where he made his 205 debut.

“It’s better,” Cormier said. “I mean, the first time I was heavy, I was like 235, 236 [to start]. This time I was lighter, I just was working a lot, so I was busy and I just didn’t gain as much weight. I didn’t really focus on my diet as much, I took a little break. Now I have a better understanding of the weight loss, a better idea of how to actually make the weight,” Cormier continued. “So I’m doing those things and it makes it a little bit easier. If I am comparing it to last time, I am back on track and maybe even ahead of schedule.”
